Thank you for the reminder that some practice days just don’t really go well. I’m self taught (mostly) and started as an adult. I love this instrument, but some days, like yesterday, I wonder when will it sound musical when I play. Everyday I improve, and I have evidence, but all of the gains are hard won.

What is an etude? Is it the next step up from beginning scales?

An ‹‹ étude ›› is French for "exercise". Literally just that. Think of scales, études and pieces in the context of a sports team training. An player will have to stretch (scales) before completing technique-driven drills (études), then they will commence learning plays and strategies (deep practice) before generally playing the game at the end of their training session (playing the piece). Your études are an important part of your development on cello.
