This is a great learning opportunity Johnathan. I’m also a mobile detailer here in CA. The Bay Area specifically. If you are going by the actual books, and being legitimate, technically no water run off is supposed to go into the drains. Many drains have a sign that says “no dumping.” So as mobile guys, we would technically have to have a water reclamation mat and a system to recoup the water once finished. However this is super cumbersome and impractical. Not to mention a little instance considering our chemicals are not half as bad as the material that gets into the drains from things like - acid rain, human excrement from homeless, and other contaminants. I have not yet been cited or ticketed, but what I have done is preemptively reached out to both my county water and sanitary district and have asked for the rules around residents (in single family homes) washing their vehicles in the drive way. They emailed back and said that there are technically no ordinances preventing that. But still, water run off and chemical run off shouldn’t be happening. So it’s a weird grey area. In any case I have the emails printed and I keep them in my truck as proof for any Karen’s that might try to give me a hard time. Now for apartments, condos/multi family residence - if a customer wants their vehicle washed there I specifically ask them to get permission from their complex/HOA on washing vehicles. I have been kicked out from apartments and condos several times and it becomes a huge hassle so I just get in front of it from the beginning.
That's funny because then they shouldn't have carwash shops since most of them don't collect back the water and don't get ticketed for that in different places in California. That law is completely in a gray area. There's more stuff from the streets that is mixed and high in chemicals than a detailer has, like what the homeless dump, etc.
I've detailed Newport, laguna, Tustin and Irvine area and have never had an issue, in Newport they have that long street that runs along the 2 little islands and its one way tight street and the ticket people always say hi and go along their way.
Yep, California is crazy with all of that. To get licensed they required me to get a containment mat, a pump and a drum to collect waste water. I converted to rinseless and never had to deal with their bs haha
Managerial / customer skills are underrated. I learned a lot in my 17 months at a hotel shuttle company. Many tactics to diffuse conflicts, rehearsing in your imagination helps a lot
I think the home owner should know their HOA laws and to let the detailer know if they can or cannot do work there. The male Karen was being a Asshole. I pray you get 10x what you lost, Godspeed
@@Symphonyautospa appreciate the comment and support! It was not an HOA complex but actually homes but in Newport they have small roads and big houses, it was annoying that’s for sure! Watch the other video when i was taking care of the black Porsche.
Couldn’t you just show your Business License obtained from the City? Every City has its ordinances in terms of what’s allowed. Obtaining a Business License from the City allows a business such as Auto Detailing to operate. Otherwise, they wouldn’t approve the Business License.

I have dealt with these fools since long time ago the way you do it is either have a boom to pick up water and a vacuum and throw away the dirt which is ridiculous or you use a low pressure pressure washer you don’t throw more than a cup or two of water, they cant nail you for heading into the sewer unless they have proof that the water is hitting the sewer has the only way they can give you a ticket or just use very little water. Also roll up your hose gun after you wash the car then you can say that wasn’t me. It was someone else I was throwing water and they have no proof against you since your stuff is put away. I’m surprised they doing again usual they only do it near there building or if really close ocean homes they check . Also Karen so want be as quiet and not messy so people don’t do stuff to u . Sunday they never open so no issues and power washer always work nights cause they know this guys don’t work at night city . there worse have water go down those draining all night long at gas company and many place but they go for little guys but hopefully one day they will get sued for are rights cause even carpet clean business throw there water all day long down sewers and it’s worse more dirty than car detailing and they make sure u have a lic to work each city which another crazy thing if work like 5-7 city’s u got get one for each one lol
