I bought a cage at Home Depot for around $75. I had to install a mesh around the cage because the racoons kept stealing my marshmallows from the sides using their long fingers. I also anchored the cage with two rebars so they wouldn't move it and activate the trap release from the outside. I caught 4 from a family of 5 that kept using my pool and pooping in it! It's a good idea to install a camera with night vision to study their behavior and see exactly how they approach the cage and where they come into your yard. They can climb a 4X4 like nothing or they can walk across a cedar fence like if it were a sidewalk. They use their long fingers wisely. He isn't wrong, and I am about to use my 9mm. This is costing alot and I can't get up on my roof bc of a bad shoulder so I had to have someone come out. Thankfully all my duct work is underneath my home in crawl space and that is all sealed off with heavy gauge wire or I'd be so LIVID.

Many raccoons will reach into the traps wired grid and draw the food out. And if you do trap one they have one hell of a growl. Not for weak people , This ia a heavy adrenaline rodent ready to attack.
Had the same problem. Went to Lowes & bought some plastic gutter guard screening & zip tied it around the front area of the cage, so they couldn't reach in & snag the food.
I have that trap or one similar but the raccoon was so mad, and kept biting on the wires, the catch thing that keeps the plate up and the door open won't work. I also think the trap wires are so large, it's dangerous getting near the trap because the raccoon can reach out. Why not a thick mesh versus the wires? And then an easier way to open the door for release after he's inside and still hissing! Just learning about traps but I still think there's improvement needed on the design!
A great trap. I have caught 8 racoons in the last 12 days this summer; opposums , a skunk, and more coons in prior years. Two to three miles is not far enough a distance to relocate them for good. The permitted drop off area needs to be further than 5 miles. I have been told. I had to let one go one friday morning because I had to get a friend to her doctor's location 45 miles away and didn't want the coon to have to stay in the cage till I got back several hours later. Especially after having to spent most of the prior night in the cage. After that coon was caught and let go off my porch, the coons started tripping the trap and then reaching through the squares in the wires to eat the cat food from the outside of the cage trap. I have been taking the coons (with permission) to a wildlife preserve 13 miles away and one I took to a state park, with permission.
I would like to know how to easily open that trap and let a live one go? I have this same trap but it does not seem an easy task to let one of these wild nasty critters go especially with the door that does not open so easily. Any special tricks? I have also heard that their sense of smell is crazy good and unless you drive them over 20 miles away at least, they will return?

Approach the live trap really slow with a tarp, or something else, that you are willing to sacrifice and drape it over the trap. I won't promise it won't spray but at least it won't get you if it does. Transport or dispose of it as you please. Handle the whole unit real carefully when moving it.

Bob, we have a cage like that and it just trapped a raccoon. Is it dangerous to release him? And do you know if animal control will come out to get him?
I've released them before without incident. However, no guarantees. They are wild animals. Don't corner them or otherwise threaten them and you should be ok. Use common sense. The ones I've released just run away...
What happened when you picked up the cage and relocated them? That's the hard part of the situation I'm trying to catch them now they are in my attic very scary

I have the exact same trap, works great. Got the possum living under my house the first night with it. named it uncle fester, cause it was trying to live in between the wall and my sauna tub. If I took off the panel, I could see it looking at me like some creepy voyeur. one day later I got it. Then I found out its illegal to possess or relocate (even across the street) possums, raccoons, etc, in my state. Once you've caught it, they instruct you to either kill it or pay to have it killed.

If you use catfood, you risk catching your own cat. I use stale marshmallows (harder for them to pull through the wire) and grapes. I also weight the top with heavy paving stone and also on the sides.
We have a racoon luving in our attic. Dont know how it got it, but every couple of days it chews holes in the ceiling to try and make its way into the house. Everytime we patch a hole uo it just eats another one in the wall. Going to get this cage and find a way to place it in the roof. Theres no walk in attic installed. So we cant climb up there. I really hope this works because im tired of the little Bastard trying to break in my house to steal my food.
Here in Pennsylvania once trapped the problem animal may NOT be released into the wild it must be dispatched. So before you run out and buy a live trap in PA at least check your state's laws and be aware you are the one responsible for the animal. If your not willing to take a life, at least here in PA , have it professionally done.
that is what exactly is happening at my house but we have cats we feed our cats outside and then the raccoons come and then yeah so they are right by the garbage to the garbage they take up residence of the house so yeah it's pretty much the same thing you had but I don't have a garage anywhere anywhere where I can get the freaking havahart live trap
Cool video. We have a problem with skunks wandering in our garden but since then we've caught between 15 and 20 of them in this trap. We tie a string to the cage and throw it in the irrigation canal for a few minutes before pulling them out and burying them. No more problems!
They are extremely smart....I had a whole family tearing up my garbage every night I got the trap....trapped one and the next night my garbage tore up again but they never went near the trap..disguised the trap fully still nothing....they are smart
Hasnt worked for me yet! Raccoons bump it til it sprkngs door than pull the bait to side where they can nibble it. Canadian ones are smarter apparently. Getting frustrating cuz my cat scrapped it twice now . ( Yes I keep my cat indoors now at night )
Do the varments get aggressive or docile? The one I just caught is just sitting there. It was pissed at the world for the first hour, then it calmed down
I need to buy one of these traps. Though with my luck, after I relocate the raccoons to the hills, I'll half expect to find a freaking grizzly bear raiding my trash barrels.
im a kid i trap them for fun and release them but would you give some tips because im sorta a noob not really my dads family gives me tips but what are ur tips
I've caught 9 of them so far. They are very crafty. Sometimes they manage to steal the bait without getting caught for 3 or 4 nights in a row before I finally nab one of them. I haul them across the river and release them so they can't come back here.
Four things: one, they will tear up your grass once trapped, so if you can, put the trap on concrete. Two, a can of sardines works great. Leave a trail of sardines going into the trap. I have caught three raccoons in three nights this way. Three, set the trap at night but check it early the next morning. Finally, release them at least ten miles away.
Question - I set the trap in a cardboard box and this morning when I found the racoon, the box was torn, there was some blood on the box and the racoon wouldnt really move besides moving his head and tail sometimes. Where did I go wrong?
I'm trying to catch one that has eaten 4 of my chickens. He goes around the trap, digs under it, bumps it several times, and eventually trips the switch. They are clever and sneaky critters!
RetroGamingNinja Once they discover an easy meal, they tell all of their friends. I'll bet you have more that one... Yes very clever and sneaky, it's a survival skill! Good luck.
I've been trying this for 3 days. The dude keeps stealing the bait food and either not setting the trap off, or sets the trap off but nothing in the cage. He keeps killing my hens
Use a rope so you can pull the door open from behind the cage. The animal won't take their eyes off of you so you have to prod them to back out of the cage. This way you stay safe behind the cage. After they back out they'll realize they are free and run off. Good luck.
All jokes aside theres this raccoon in our neighborhood and it doesnt seem to be afraid of people.. He will walk across the gate or street even if we are outside gathered around a fire pit
I used this type trap - the raccoon literally tore it apart - I then built home made trap with old bar-be-que grills- works great but is heavy (esp with a raccoon inside)
My family will often catch and release possums and/or raccoons if we find any near our house. if the trap works then usually, in the morning, the animal is calm, not really doing anything, but one morning we found out that we caught a baby raccoon and this little guy was still going. He growled and snarlef at us and tried digging his way out. It of course didn't work, and he ended up digging a small trench around the cage
I have the old style home made traps. I caught 3 young raccoons in the same trap. The three followed each other into the trap one behind the other until the door shut. When I first approached the trap I thought that I trapped the biggest coon ever. Then I saw 2 eyes looking at me then 4 eyes then 6 eyes .
Raccoons are very smart, I always zip tie my bait down, so they have to work at getting the food. Like you I have discovered that I have two more raccoons which I caught on my game camera last night. I have caught one, moved him to the country. They may be trap leery after the first one is trapped, wait a few days before resetting. You are right raccoons can be very, vicious. SO, be very careful when you release them, they can turn on you. I have been bitten twice. Let me add use meat, not peanut butter, most rats ( not all of them) are vegetarians, at least the woodrat A.K.A a packrat
Hi Bob, I enjoy your music videos and I found this video interesting. I had a Havahart trap as a kid and trapped the family cat! I share your respect for wildlife. I doubt he caught it humanely just to kill it. He probably drove several miles away and released it. There are super cheap traps to kill them if he wanted to go that route.
Nice! I had one fall in my trash can outside I should of closed it and moved it somewhere far way from my house but I was stupid and kick the trash can over and he went right back under my deck
I have a raccoon problem but this one is smart, he got the bait out of the trap and ate 3 of my chickens, then he got bait out of the steel trap we set. I NEED HELP
I tie a small rope to the door, stand to the back of the cage (opposite the door) and put one foot on the cage and open. They won’t take their eyes off of you as they back out of the cage. He’ll start running once he realizes he’s is free. Having him go out the front and you standing at the back gives you the distance you need for safety. He’s less likely to come after you since he’s not cornered.
Make sure you put a heavy mat under the trap if being used on a deck, they will tear your deck up. Same thing in your car while transporting. I didn’t take mine very far, but it was such a nice spot, hope they don’t come back. Caught 6 raccoons in 6 days. How long does it usually take before they come back? I’ve taken stray cats not far and they never came back, cats are way smarter. Saw a cat inside the trap eating the food and avoiding the trigger plate.

Laws are for slaves, do what you want with it but don't follow what some lawyer has chosen for you to do.
that is what exactly is happening at my house but we have cats we feed our cats outside and then the raccoons come and then yeah so they are right by the garbage to the garbage they take up residence of the house so yeah it's pretty much the same thing you had but I don't have a garage anywhere anywhere where I can get the freaking havahart live trap
That scared me when the door went up
my fried woke up like what was that sounded like a spaceship lol
got eem
Cool video. We have a problem with skunks wandering in our garden but since then we've caught between 15 and 20 of them in this trap. We tie a string to the cage and throw it in the irrigation canal for a few minutes before pulling them out and burying them. No more problems!
Nice dude i like you way of "disposing of them" cool never thought about drowning em guess that would save on ammo
+Helios77711 Illegal, for a reason.
Or you could easily just go and let them off somewhere perhaps? And not make them suffer by drowning them?
I mean, cmon.
I soot them with a quality 22 lr hollow point. To the head no suffering.
He does this so they don't spray above water :{
were do yall get trap at
+Daniel Pedraza Daniel, I got my on Amazon! Here's the link: goo.gl/B7tduW
K thank u
i got my trap at menard for 40 to 50 bucks
Daniel Pedraza I don't now
Heyngdg dg
They are extremely smart....I had a whole family tearing up my garbage every night I got the trap....trapped one and the next night my garbage tore up again but they never went near the trap..disguised the trap fully still nothing....they are smart
Ditto with the racoons. I switched to garbage can bungee cords to keep the lid closed on the garbage can.
for people who want to see the raccoon get trapped skip to 2:15
What did you do with the raccoon?
What bait did you use?
Dry cat food.
Hasnt worked for me yet! Raccoons bump it til it sprkngs door than pull the bait to side where they can nibble it.
Canadian ones are smarter apparently. Getting frustrating cuz my cat scrapped it twice now . ( Yes I keep my cat indoors now at night )
Have ypu tried putting a blanket over the cage or leaves concealing it better.
I had that issue too. I put a cement block on each side and one on top of the cage. It worked.
Do the varments get aggressive or docile? The one I just caught is just sitting there. It was pissed at the world for the first hour, then it calmed down
Sure, we all calm down when we are tired of fighting. But I would call them docile.
@@BobSell thanks. It didn’t chew through the cage, and now it’s in the woods near water
I used fish for this trap, and it worked the first day. But I have no idea what to do with it now, and it's probably dead.
I need to buy one of these traps. Though with my luck, after I relocate the raccoons to the hills, I'll half expect to find a freaking grizzly bear raiding my trash barrels.
Agree, don't make it someone elses problem!
im a kid i trap them for fun and release them but would you give some tips because im sorta a noob not really my dads family gives me tips but what are ur tips
+Joshua Woodley Josh, be careful when you release them so they don't turn on you. Don't give them the opportunity to bite you! They carry diseases!
+Bob Sell i carry a hammer justin case
+Bob Sell oh me and my freind was watching this with me and i was like i bet theres gonna 2
Finally, release them at least ten miles away.
thank ;you for the tips
Question - I set the trap in a cardboard box and this morning when I found the racoon, the box was torn, there was some blood on the box and the racoon wouldnt really move besides moving his head and tail sometimes. Where did I go wrong?
Who is the Band Playing the Song???
Royalty free music in Logic Pro X
i put a trap out yesterday... ive never done this before... i have three traps with cat food and marshmallows... any advice anyone???
I used dry cat food. Worked every time!
What kind of food do you use?
Dry cat food.
Good luck.
I finally got him last night. I'll keep it baited though.
I've been trying this for 3 days. The dude keeps stealing the bait food and either not setting the trap off, or sets the trap off but nothing in the cage. He keeps killing my hens
What baits did you used?
Marshmallows work great, anything sweet really
Dry cat food...
And my mom says it can't trap raccoons. this video proves otherwise
Those animals can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.
Thanks for vid. we have a pest in attic..
Do these traps rust?
Yes.
What are u using for bait here????
Dry cat food!
Trap works good, how do you get it out?
Use a rope so you can pull the door open from behind the cage. The animal won't take their eyes off of you so you have to prod them to back out of the cage. This way you stay safe behind the cage. After they back out they'll realize they are free and run off. Good luck.
All jokes aside theres this raccoon in our neighborhood and it doesnt seem to be afraid of people.. He will walk across the gate or street even if we are outside gathered around a fire pit
I used this type trap - the raccoon literally tore it apart - I then built home made trap with old bar-be-que grills- works great but is heavy (esp with a raccoon inside)
yep, where there's one, there's actually many, I caught one in my H&H trap and turns out there were 3 more...so far
Looking at the roadkill I'm guessing there's thousands more.. Good luck!
so when u catch em do ya pop em with a 22 or ?
what u didnt show is trying to pick up the cage and release. they can get ferocious once caged and release isnt easy.

Poor Rigby, that Don left his ass alone in the cage while he’s eating food with no help. Cool brother they say. Lol. 😂
Hi Bob, I enjoy your music videos and I found this video interesting. I had a Havahart trap as a kid and trapped the family cat! I share your respect for wildlife. Because of the horrible, hateful comments on this video I learned how to block users. It's easy and kind of satisfying to block people who absolutely do not share my core values of respecting nature.
Hey Peter, thanks for the great comment! I have over a million views on my channel now so I've learned how ignore jerks and disrespectful trouble makers. Thanks for checking out my music. I appreciate the listen. Thanks again! All the best.
Raccoon; we don’t die, we multiply 😂
I thought live catch traps were so the animals didn’t rot over night and you can get them fresh
Having the same problem
A raccoon keeps coming at night killing my chickens!
That’s why I’m watching this video 😂
You must have a secure henhouse. There's no way around it.
that fact that he doesn't tell us what happens after the raccoon gets trapped pretty much lets us know it didn't end well for that raccoon.
I NEED HELP
All me chickens are die because of those things I wish I could shoot tham in the head
Raccoon destroyed my trap, broke a hog ring and tore the carrier handle off, squeezed out the gap and then he went home
I just purchased that exact same trap for $40 and I can't wait to try it out on the like 20 raccoons we have here
Bait? If you want to catch raccoons, but NOT the neighbor's cat - use marshmallows!
Hey im just wondering, what kind of stuff did you use for bait?
Marshmallows and peanut butter bread. But marshmallows are the best
Dry cat food
He brought backup?
They normally do!
Awesome
I have that same cage and we caught a raccon but it ripped threw the cage

@@gatorent.productionbuffrec8797 Tf wrong with you
Once you catch him, and transport him wherever you're going to release him… How do you release him without the possibility of him turning on you?
I tie a small rope to the door, stand to the back of the cage (opposite the door) and put one foot on the cage and open. They won’t take their eyes off of you as they back out of the cage. He’ll start running once he realizes he’s is free. Having him go out the front and you standing at the back gives you the distance you need for safety. He’s less likely to come after you since he’s not cornered.
Bob Sell
THANKYOU!👍
carefully. i used gloves and a flyfishing suit
Good tip!
