Appalachian Trail Day 5 - No Easy Days on the AT

- Appalachian Trail hiking is a challenge, there are no easy days on the trail for Billy Blue. Today I logged 15 miles on Day 5 to Unicoi Gap. The hiking was enjoyable but strenuous, a cheap charlie adventure.

Oh Yea, the military poncho, that's what I used 👍 I spent two weeks in Canada, 10 days non stop rain. With constant high humidity, it was impossible to dry your clothes. I was the only one that stayed dry. Constant vigilance to make sure my clothes were covered. Like you I'm sure, I wish the sleeves were longer, and that it reached down to my boots.

Ponchos are very uncomfortable with the flapping around and snagging on branches. That's why I made a jacket out of my military-issued ponchos. It makes a difference when it comes to rain dripping in, the poncho flapping around, and a more fitting feel while walking. It was like having on a raincoat. Just have to use a waterproof bag inside the backpack to keep the contents dry. These days I'd invest in Gore-Tex and wear the top and bottom when needed.
Dude your food bag needs to be in a real tree not 6ft off the ground haha

No it’s actually a popular method to deal with bears. I will explain in another video.

Just because you've never used one before isn't a good enough reason to not use at least one hiking pole, it really helps with ascent/decent/creek crossings/racoon defense/etc.
I’ll keep it in mind but so far doing okay without them.

I’ve used a pancho for rain for many years. It’s the best option I’ve found to keep the pack from getting saturated and weighing a ton. (Rain jackets cause you to sweat, so I’ve found them worthless. A rain cover for the pack helps a bit.)

CC off to a good start .. This terrain a walk in a park compared to the brutal Essex trail..
That poncho rocks. And yeah, the water out there tastes amazing. In a moment of weakness I drank directly from a clean looking source on more than one occasion. Yes, of course, don't do that, especially with a virus going around. But I always took my glasses off first... doh!

I wrap a rope around my poncho when it's windy. Worked for me.
As for the heat, I don't thing their is anything better than a poncho for the heat and sweat. It a big reason why I chose it. Massive ventilation.

Not yet they are pretty elusive. A few others have seen them though.

I think I'd skip the reviews unless ur just hiking and bullshitting to the camera. Reviews seem odd in the video and it's not ur thing. And I could be wrong but I think the bear bag should be a lot higher in the tree so the bear can't reach it. But ur doing an awesome job, stay safe and stay healthy.

It was a normal hotel room in town took 4 showers haha. Yes other hikers pretty cool.
