For anyone who can't read the Korean, this is Minje Sung and Mikyung Sung, both by this time already grand prize winners of the J.M. Sperger Competition, with their mom on piano, playing the theme of the movie "Love Affair" by Morricone.
Why are you guys so serious? So Mikyung Sung is underplaying to shadow her brother. But he’s clearly angry that she’s better than him regardless. Ah the irony.
Minje may not have the same genius at musical expressiveness as Mikyung does, but he is technically one of the most talented bassists in the world. I'm not sure I can think of anyone else who is as effortless at leaping to any note anywhere on the fingerboard perfectly in tune, not even Mikyung. His mastery of the instrument is incredible. And he's pretty darn musical, too, just not Mikyung musical. But you're right, Mikyung has a sensitivity, an ability to communicate emotion, a way of singing or speaking through the instrument, straight to the soul, that nobody else can match.
@@matthewv789 "I'm not sure I can think of anyone else who is as effortless at leaping to any note anywhere on the fingerboard perfectly in tune"...REALLY hope you're not serious on this one. If by effortless you mean pencil writing most of the notes he plays on the fingerboard; I'll give you that. Effortless leaps and perfectly in tune please let me develop: Lauren Pierce, Marcos Machado (do check his technique off of this planet) Roman Patkolo (insane) Ermanno Ferarri etc, etc. Needless to say that Minje mostly glisses (slides) in thumb position, not really hiding them that well at all. It's more of a theatrical show than to just close your eyes and enjoy the music playing. A marketing scheme at most, Minje's concieted and very envious of Mikyung, not living up to his father's expectations, and selling otherwise by default, being the male child in a Korean household for those who know them you know what I'm talking about. And of course all of that is behind the curtain and closed doors family laundry not expected to show up but to some of us close to the down and dirty, and those keen of eye and ear.
@@vartago I don’t know what you have against Minje Sung, but I’m not interested in devolving into negativity and innuendo. I know and communicate with the family members to some degree, and have never detected anything but great pride in both Minje and Mikyung. I am not sure why you would think Minje would be jealous of Mikyung. He won the Sperger and Koussevitzky competitions, put out three or four albums including on DG and Sony Classical (Mikyung has none), has been a leading member of Bassiona Amarosa for years (about which I expect Klaus Trumpf’s opinion probably counted quite a bit, as well as that of the other members, and I don’t think they gave him the leading role for no reason), maintains if anything a more active solo performing career than Mikyung does and has similar viewership of his videos. What is there to be jealous of? As to your comparisons with other bassists, I don’t want to malign any of them, who are all excellent, hardworking bassists, some of whom give back considerable time teaching, etc. I’ll give you Patkolo, who is very strong, technically one of the best (though no better than Minje in my opinion, if even quite as good), but personally doesn’t do anything musically for me. Minje may lack Mikyung’s magic, but he’s at least quite a way above average in musicality, phrasing, and expressiveness, much more than I personally feel from Patkolo. The others are admirable and I respect them greatly, but I find it amusing that you even tried to compare them to Minje Sung. :) (Admittedly I am not familiar with a double bassist named Ermanno Ferrari, though I am aware of a composer named Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari.)
@@matthewv789 Again to address your exact words and comparison between the former bass players including Roman Patkolo. Your words were that Minje's precision technique was unsurpassed and that no one plays as in tune as he does. A laughable matter at most. Now you change your rhetoric to interpretation? funny..Where Patkolo, Machado,Pierce, Ferrari(do look up that beast of a bass player) are clearly more precise than Minje. Minje still marks his notes on the fingerboard. And slides horrible glissandos from note to note. Koussevitsky and Sperger competitions are not what they used to be hands down..Bassiona Amorosa practically died after Patkolo and other former members left it. And you still wonder why nobody knows Minje? For those who really know the dirty laundry in the family, you know what I mean. And you probably know me as well.교만한 바보
정말 너무너무 좋아하는 곡이자 연주영상. 잊을만하면 와서 듣고가고 듣고가고. 6년7년이 다돼가네요

Awesome to see two basses play together like this.
Probably the two best bassists on the planet, Minje is the most technically skilled and Mikyung is the most emotionally expressive, in my opinion.
