  • Off on a tangent ...
Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) helped get forces to the Normandy shore on D-Day - but what about afterwards? How do you continue to build up your forces while nearby ports are still in German hands?
The solution was the Mulberry harbours, two artificial harbours that were built on the Normandy beaches. Mulberry ‘A’ was at Omaha Beach and Mulberry ‘B’ was at Gold Beach.
This footage, from 1944, shows how the Mulberry harbour at Omaha Beach was assembled. It also features some footage from the Mulberry harbour at Gold Beach and from Cherbourg.
The footage comes from US National Archives (428 NPC 6238, 428 NPC 6239, 428 NPC 6240).
