Am I the only one that got really annoyed by her not actually demonstrating how to cut the teeth out? Lmao I kept anticipating it every time she got close to them with the wire cutters lmao just to be let down when she pulled it away 😭😔
What works for me is to Mark the overall desired zipper length, then remove the 1st two zipper tabs above your mark by using needle nose pliers to securely grab just the end of each individual tab to be removed and while securely holding the zipper, pull straight out, the tabs pull off fairly easily. Then, use the pliers to grip & remove the stop tabs. The stop tabs are like a tiny clamp that is pinched in place and need to be gripped from the sides, so as not to pinch it closed even tighter while gripping to remove it. In order to make room for the pliers to grip the stop tab by it's sides, one zipper tab below the stop tab will need to also be removed. Grip from the sides, and pull straight out just like the zipper tabs. Now while still holding the stop tab with the pliers, use a small sewing machine flat screwdriver to insert into the stop tab and twist to slightly open the gap enough to slide in place at your new length mark on the zipper and now grip it with the pliers, top & bottom so as to crimp it in place. I use a small tack hammer with the zipper placed on a hard surface to tap the tab a little tighter. Trim the excess length & use heat, or by some means, seal the cut end to prevent unraveling. Cheers.
Thanks! I thought this video was very clear and I appreciate that you shared it. The best part is showing that there is more than one way to make the zipper stop at the top. I didn't realize zipper repair kits were available.
+Vida Holmes cutting off the teeth isn't too difficult, but the pieces do go flying and I didn't want to risk damaging our camera lens due to flying debris. The tips and angles I suggested cutting at are the ones I used in doing my own.
Wasn't clear to me how you used the wire cutters, so video not helpful at that point sorry to say. Seems obvious one cuts from the top, the teeth are the issue for me. Did like the point about zip repair kits giving new top clamps, though if whipping I think thicker button hole thread would work better?
Question what was the purpose of taking all the teeth out above the mark for the stopper instead of just pulling two or three teeth to make it easier to put in the stopper
This video is very helpful to me. I have already asked for help plus watched 3 videos about shortening a zipper. After watching the first video actually *show* the person wrenching off the unneeded zipper teeth, it is very clear to me why you didn't make us go through watching you wrench the teeth off, too. You explained the process very clearly. Plus I was having trouble finding information on how to shorten a plastic zipper which surprised me. There are a lot of plastic zippers out there! Thank you.
Your instructions were great. I have to replace a zipper in an Irish Knit sweater and they sent the wrong size. Since it's for a friend, I was worried about messing it up but your video put me at ease. I'm ready to tackle it now if I can find replacement end stops. Thank you.
+Evelina Cataleya if you can't find zipper repair kits in the notions department of your fabric store, you can find them online: www.walmart.com/ip/43497617?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227031398334&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=56011183736&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=100091084696&veh=sem
Love your videos! They are so helpful. Its one of those 'learn something new each day'! My question, if your tucking the zipper tab behind the zipper (at top) or putting it under the collar/facing, do you need the stop? Thanks
probably not, but then you have to be careful until that step is completed. I've definitely made the mistake of fooling with my zipper after cutting off the stops and pulled my tab completely off and then it's a pain in the neck to get it back on the zipper. I live and learn all the time too. ;)
I need to shorten a plastic zipper from the bottom, as it's already sewn onto a jacket... Anyone think I can re-attach that little guide piece if I take it off?
+Dlina Rodz You can still use a metal top. If you want it to match better, you can use nail polish to color it. Or you can use the whip stitch at the top.
For that, I would do a whipstitch over the coil where you want it to end at the top (each side individually, not zipped up) and then just cut it with your paper scissors above that point. Usually the coil is made with plastic and can be cut off.
i installed separating zipper with slider facing down (toward lining oops) short of reinstalling could a slider be removed and turned over to face other way? ie does a slider work in either direction? the pull, not the slider, would be damaged but could just stitch a makeshift stop as shown? thanks so much! renee
Removing the teeth from a metal zipper is not fot the faint of heart. Simply pulling at them with a pair of pliers will make you give up. You need the proper tools including a good quality pair of side cutters, safety glasses, and a work area far away from anything delicate. The garage workbench is best. A good quality metal zipper will be designed to keep its teeth securely, so you must have experience working with metal to be anywhere successful without destroying the rest of the zip. First practice with an old throwaway zipper before attempting this procedure. The video makes it look simple. It is not.
for all the useless degrees in higher education, they should definitely have one in sewing and quilting arts or cloth/ clothing but they don't even have one!
OMG! Could you just show us the ACTUAL cutting, please, instead of talking about it! I need to see the HOW of the cut.
Yes omg so annoying!
Agreeee.. its really annoying.
Was thinking the same thing!!!!!
me too, wish she would of done the actual cutting🤔
Yes that's the whole point of me watching !! The point of making a video is to show you actually doing the process..
Am I the only one that got really annoyed by her not actually demonstrating how to cut the teeth out? Lmao I kept anticipating it every time she got close to them with the wire cutters lmao just to be let down when she pulled it away 😭😔
Yes me too I sure would have like to see it actually have happened. But still appreciating that she showed.
Super
Only reason why I clicked on the video
I'm bummed you didn't demonstrate the actual cutting of the teeth. Super helpful otherwise.

Needed to see how yoy cut off teeth on zipper. Remember short cut is not always good for everyone.
+Vida Holmes cutting off the teeth isn't too difficult, but the pieces do go flying and I didn't want to risk damaging our camera lens due to flying debris. The tips and angles I suggested cutting at are the ones I used in doing my own.
Yes, I agree!

Why not demonstrate the actual cutting of the teeth on camera???
Thank you for this video! I actually used cuticle scissors to snip the teeth (plastic).

+Laura Williams Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so glad you found our tutorial helpful :)
A long way to say remove a few metal teeth and sew and end
Your instructions were great. I have to replace a zipper in an Irish Knit sweater and they sent the wrong size. Since it's for a friend, I was worried about messing it up but your video put me at ease. I'm ready to tackle it now if I can find replacement end stops. Thank you.
glad you found it helpful
It would be better if u showing the cutting instead of talking too much. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! ❤❤❤❤ I love your videos sooo much! ❤
How about actually doing one ON CAMERA?!!!!! OMG
great video ..but can you direct us where to find the zipper tops because I looked and cannot locate them. thank you
+Evelina Cataleya if you can't find zipper repair kits in the notions department of your fabric store, you can find them online: www.walmart.com/ip/43497617?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227031398334&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=56011183736&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=100091084696&veh=sem
You could also (carefully) wedge the zipper top from an old zipper or the one from the top of the zipper that you're cutting.
I want shorter my jackets zipper from below, because is broken, is it able to make it?
does this work with nylon coil separating zippers?
great stuff, really learned alot and timing couldnt be better!
I really love this canal

No, just unpick the stitches and reattach the zipper.
and how can we finish the plastic zipper
+Dlina Rodz You can still use a metal top. If you want it to match better, you can use nail polish to color it. Or you can use the whip stitch at the top.
+Professor Pincushion thank you!!! :)
thank you for this video, shortening a zipper is like pulling teeth!
The separating zipper I am using have coil teeth! How do you shorten that?
For that, I would do a whipstitch over the coil where you want it to end at the top (each side individually, not zipped up) and then just cut it with your paper scissors above that point. Usually the coil is made with plastic and can be cut off.

hmmmm....I haven't tried that so I really don't know the answer to this :(
brilliant thank you
I love the part where she cut the teeth and showed us exactly how to do it...

Nails are super distracting
Yeah, you don't actually 'show' anything? 'Before' and 'After' pictures are about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike!! 😂
I spy Jamberry.....lol great tutorial I'll be finishing my project today
This is BS ! She says but doesn't actually show how it's done ! LAME ! That's the part we actually need to see !!
Who would do this instead of just ordering a shorter zipper. lol
for all the useless degrees in higher education,
they should definitely have one in sewing and quilting arts or cloth/ clothing
but they don't even have one!
This tutorial was a huge waste if time. SHOW US!!
Only by talking is useless, wasting our time.
NOT HELPFUL!
The most useless video
