      Hello Brian. My name is Rick & I'm looking to add a lawn maintenance division to the company. I seen your video about rout density & that was my goal. But I want to sign up 500 lawns for the year within a 1 or 2 mile radius & have them all pay for the entire year at once. My question is: can you cut 25 or 30 yards in a day? I'm in FL and these communities are "cookie cutter" yards that are small. How many workers should be in the crew?

      How to stripe a lawn buy an eXmark lazer z lol. I go deck edge to deck edge using the full width of the deck. Always have sharp blades and clean deck sometimes I switch out blades 2 times a day after every 5 houses mainly in the spring

      I was used to a 48 in deck for a long time, and we got a 62 inch this year, it has taken some getting used to knowing i have 3 inches more of blade on the left side of the mower.
      The only other tips I have are more terrain related. Up here in the northeast we have a lot of clay and sand and some bumpy uneven lawns. Keeping your machines maintained and tracking straight is one part of keeping stripes straight and clean. The other is being patient and slowing down on bumpy sections and uneven terrain.

    I try to pick a point reference, tree, post, plant, sewer cap, deck, anything of the sorts to make my first pass straight as possible. I also think what that customer see out their windows/doors and line up accordingly aswell. When I do diags I try to run my longest stripe/line first and use as above, then work one side then come back up the other side(middle out). I might even re run a pass or 2 if I'm not happy with it cause I'm meticulous in the fine details. And if I gotta double cut I will re run the previous passes the same way and drop the deck a quarter to half inch and really make the stripes POP. If I know i gotta double cut I will start the deck 3/4"-1.25" higher than I normally cut the lawn, and will cut the front then the back then recut the front then recut the back to give the cut grass a lil time to dry up some and seems to really make a big difference on clumping and gets the clippings finer

      If I try to drive a straight line either parallel or perpendicular to the structure i always "hook" my line.. However, "diagonal" almost always near perfect.. for the life of me, I cant fugure why or how I do this..

    • @jonhutchinson2405
      @jonhutchinson2405 4 года назад

      Yup. Same here. Well said. Also if there is alot of discharge grass i will raide the cut up a couple inch above cutting height and rerun those same lines. This allows for thr discharge grass to disperse alot better and you will not see any cut grass clippings left over...this is usually only an issue in the spring time with really thick long grass

    • @davidmoore8741
      @davidmoore8741 4 года назад +1

      @@williamtaylor4208 u hook prolly cause u don't do 3-5 point turns(depending on how wet the lawn is and r trying to cheat ur turn at the end. The biggest key is staying committed straight threw til u have to stop. And exmarks(sitdown) with the offset deck and front casters takes some time getting used to. And ur speed combined with bumps can get u all outta whack as well. My famous line I always say, with efficiency comes speed, better to be slower and get it all the first time(and right) then have to do it a second time or more

    I love the tip for not lining up the tire tracks. I started a grounds job back in November with no other experience with mowing other than using a riding mower. Anyways, I got promoted to an athletics field position and the place I work really loves striping the ball fields and I was not good at it. Last week I tried lining up the deck on my tire tracks and my lines are 1000 times better.

    I’m a crew foreman, we do it exactly like you do, but I only run a property two ways. Vertical and diagonal. I love the diamond pattern in my properties. It’s to the point the owner is making it a rule that that is how we need to cut all properties! Also, if you constantly run the same line the stripes just burn in and are constantly able to be seen!

    Also the stripes show up better when you cut east to west then if you cut north to south because of the way the sun rises and falls , of course you gotta change it up every time but for the photo shot it will show up best east to west , also in the morning time it’s more defined looking into the west and in the evening it will be more defined looking into the east if that’s the way you cut it

    most of them time in order to stripe you need a stripe kit and something dragging the grass in order have the grass reflect sunlight. also I would say the way you mow should point the stripes towards the house or towards whatever view you want people to see it at. mowing the grass at the right height is equally as huge too...

    Oklahoma. This is June 26 and it will be 100 and humid. Our conditions and grass dictate our ability to stripe. In our grass you have to let it grow a bit. I'll cut the entire grass a bit longer than the 3 inch then drop the blade to 3 " and stripe it. It works for me but I have my own small lawn. I've seen, and tried, the brush trick. Great till the sun moves and then the grass moves too.

    Great tips!
    Minimal deck gap and a roller kit.
    The gap between the bottom edge of the deck and the grass creates a draft /vacuum, and pulls the grass vertically. It's kind of design specific tho. Combine that with a roller and healthy grass, and you have a baseball field look.

I always make sure to look at an object such as a tree or a flag pole and try to make my first pass as straight as I can and then from there blade tip to blade tip stripping and you’ll have customers for life!

    Brian, good video. Homeowner here with 52 inch stand on Ferris. What’s the easiest/safest way to scrape underneath?

      A floor jack & jack stands . Put the floor jack under the deck , chalk the back wheel , jack it up from front middle of the deck, put jack stand under the front casters get a paint scraper and get down on the ground & scrape away

    Here in Louisiana, by the time you stripe it, it needs cutting again

    Biggest thing more than anything is having green grass with little weeds and a good grass type. There's a lot of other contributing factors but thosr are the main things, just about every mower will stripe.

    I understand clean in the underside of the carriage will make the grass stand up higher. However, how do you clean the underside of the mower deck? Not everyone has a lift to get under it.

    Some grass stripes well, of course fescues, zoysia, and others. We can't take much credit for it. I use a roller even, regular stripe kits, homemade stripers, whatever. It's just grass laid over in direction of travel. Sorry fellas. What I wish we could have a breakthrough on is the lines within the cutting swath made by the blades meeting each other. I have pondered this so much. Different blades sharpened different ways makes some difference but does not eliminate it. My exmark navigator does not do it because of its design, it has only 2 blades one rh one lh, to make center rear discharge. Dual tail wheel makes the cutting swath clean. But regular side discharge 3 blade lawnmowers do not mow that clean and there's the annoying lines.

    Never go end of deck to end of deck always scalp shell to scalp wheel you have to overlap a little that’s why the tire marks in your stripes are uneven

    Also make sure the deck rake is an 1/8 - 1/4 lower in front than the rear to allow efficient airflow from rear deck.

    I saw you set your mower to 3 to 3.25 in height to cut the lawn. So how tall should the grass be without it clumping up. I clean my deck every time I cut my lawn. Just tired of it clumping up. I raise the deck also to keep it from clumping up. Do you keep your grass deflector all the way up or down? Why is my grass clumping?
