Operation Mount Hope III was a secret plan to capture a Soviet Mil Mi-25 "Hind-D" attack helicopter. It was the latest export version of the Mi-24 that had been nicknamed the Devil's Chariot. The Americans didn't have anything like it and were very keen to get their hands on one. The plan involved 2 U.S. MH-47 Chinooks of the legendary 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment also known as the Night Stalkers.

Fact is the airbase that they steal the hind are actually still under chadian control and the libyan patrol you see are just patrol troop to inspected the frontline between chad and libyan.
Even if libyan saw it , only think they can do is sending mig to intercepted, they can't recaptured the airfield from ground at all.
CIA pay a hefty sums of money to Chad for that passage and the abandonded hind chan obtained from libyan tho..

We tried to haul one of these out of an airfield in Iraq during the Gulf War. We pulled the massive battery tray (more like a drawer) out took four men to carry that drawer, emptied all the rounds, downloaded all the rockets and pods from wing points, even dumped all the fuel. The CH-47 we used couldn't lift it because it was still too heavy. Had to come back the next day and actually pull parts off the aircraft to get it to reach recovery limits. For all the praise I read in Jane's book for this aircraft I was unimpressed. Even the rotor brake was like something out of an Old VW. A parking brake handle by the pilot's seat that you press the button on the end to unlock and raise or lower to park or release just like in the 80s cars. The cargo area was supposed to be able to carry 8 to 10 fully equipped troops? Maybe if they stacked all their equipment and weapons and laid on top of each other. I'll take a UH-60L any day. Another issue that you pointed out here was the high temps. Hot air is lighter and provides much less lift easpecially for a twin three bladed system. So load weight would not have been the only issue these guys faced. just as we had to deal with it in Iraq. As far as I recall, Delta was out of Bragg back then and 160th was at Ft Campbell. That was then. Not sure who is where these days.
