The animation was created by using MikuMikuDance(MMD). You can download the MMD models and MMD motions used in this video from niconico that is Japanese video sharing site. Take a look at the description of this video.

Awesome. that is basically the concept how all this works on stage. Need: video projector(s), german people also use to call these devices 'beamers', silk/gaze screen, computer(s) for film and music playback, physical stage where the screen is placed on and where Miku is displayed onto. So Miku can appear - even at your home where you would like it to see if you have the minimum required equipment.
LED beamers/projectors aren't that expensive anymore btw.
How do you get the footage for the Miku and the background? Do you render it by yourself with MMD? Or there is any ready to use footage?
For miku, you can search "hologram ready" and you'll find videos of her! :)

How would you get the stage, dancer, and background separate? It makes sense but the background and the stage if you just crop the video, but the dancer would have to be in an empty background. Is it just an MMD video thing?
very simple to do.... background + gap+ subject with black background all in one. because the projector is at an angle. you need to correct the perspective distortion. you need to replace the screen with an actual opaque wall and project some boxes or line to visually assist you in fixing distortion for both walls...this interesting, but im so far ahead in this technology , courtesy of competing with myself.

Can I use a glass instead of the Mosquito screen?
sure, but will need to find the right angle, `cuz the glass reflect, but is`nt a problem.
You'd need to put on a clear rear projection film onto the glass. The purpose of the mosquito screen or rear projection screen is to bounce light off of the surface of that pannel because glass is super transparent so most of the light will just go through and you'll barely see the image on the glass. This is the exact same technique used on Vocaloid concerts, few panels with screens put together. Btw those films are called "hologram films", which is not true at all.
I use Prspctv. It's a simple projection mapping tool for iPhone/iPad.

Very nice job. My question is about the animation. I am familiar with the characters, but not the software used to make the visual (the actual video, not the voice or projection mapping). Did you create this with standard 3D software, or is there something else specific to these characters that you used? I love what you did. It is very inventive.

matty4z i don't know if you found out yet, but common method is using an animating program called MMD, of MikuMikuDance, then simply attaching your computer or any other item that plays digital media by a media player of some kind (pretty much any kind) to a projector, this is done in Japan and America to perform concerts they call live party, (Google Miku Live party 2013 to get a better understanding of the concert part) alto they use DiALAD screens and half a million dollar projectors witch gives them the ability to pull it off on a much larger scale.
one of and if no t the first digital idol/ celeberty to be feachered on a cartoon or anime was Hatsune miku, a vocaloid, (a voice made entirely from a computer, not one bit human) she is Japanese and has hundreds and if not thousands of fans all around the world. I do believe that she was the first to be put on a stage in this manner of 3D animation.

they should use this kind of projection in the real concert instead if the ovious back side projection!
