I played this game religiously in the early 2000s. I had a notebook with every ports location and what they sold/prices. For me, this was one of the best gams on the SNES.
I've spent more time with New Horizons overall, but man, the amount of hours I spent with both games is absurd. And both games, yes, did involve that same notepad, especially where I was doing both of them pre-internet
@@adzi6164 Funny you mention that. This morning I stumbled across a Nobunaga game when I was looking for new Switch games to download and I totally forgot about this comment until now lol
You're probably right about that but some people would say Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. I haven't gotten to those yet, or the N.A. & P.T.O. games you mentioned but one I found about 5 years back and played countless hours of was Rise of the Phoenix -- which is in the same vein as Rot3k on story-line but I'm not sure if it plays similarly. That and Liberty or Death -- When I found the game manuals online to learn "how" to actually play, I couldn't put down the damn controller and to be honest, it seems as though the rest of these Koei strategy games are no different...this one for sure is!
@@subtledemisefox Dynasty Warriors Tactics 1 & 2 are the only two with that title (that I've played) that I have really liked so far. I would hope there are a few more with that title beyond the PS2 era that are part of the strategy series but I'm not sure if that's case or not.
An interesting fact about the game, originally the “gold” commodity was supposed to be “slaves”. They changed this for obvious reasons, but if you check the ports that sell the cheapest gold, they’re historically places that were heavily involved in slave trading.
I played this game NES version when I was a kid. Now I'm a sailor in real life and those moments when I been on places on the game map in real life is like amazing. No one well believe that I know those place because of an NES game.
Oh man, I remember playing this a bunch with my best friend who had this as a kid. We would stay up all night sailing around, starving our crew, then starting over in Lisbon and trying to sail somewhere else. We eventually figured out if you fire most of your starting crew you can make your supplies last a lot longer, which let us reach the Americas and India. Since we were young we never made a whole lot of money or found any treasures, but we had a ton of fun just sailing around and finding ports. I even asked my parents for a map of the world so we would know where to look. Good times, good review.
watching you sail that ship for 10 minutes brought back memories of flying around doing deliveries in Elite Dangerous. it's pretty interesting that the snes even has a game like this
i'd say every platform that had a big enough userbase has a game like this. it's an eternal concept and the gameplay loop is popular with a lot of people even if its pretty niche.
KOEI has tons hardcore sims like this on some of the most unexpected platforms, including Nobunaga's Ambition where you can lose entire game on first turn on the NES.
It’s funny I had the same thought. I spent like 20 hours just trading when I first started. Of all the snes reviews I’ve watched on this channel this is the first one that I’m really jealous of not having played.
Games like this built character. After walking miles in summer heat to the video store and spending a princely sum to rent something like this I couldn’t just switch it off if it didn’t grab me. I had to stick it out, get my money’s worth, and prevail against the evil rat bastards that created these games. That’s how I got through Bart vs The World on NES. What doesn’t smother you to death with boredom and frustration only makes you stronger.
I put 100's of hours in to this game as a kid. 20 something years later I still have the Genesis cartage sitting on my shelf. And this review is spot on. Great job.
I recently beat this game, after starting it on your insistence. It was perfect for filling in all the down time at work, so I decided I would only play it there (with very few exceptions). Two months later, after beating the game, I am so so so sick of sailing, but at the same time I enjoyed it. Once I've had a break I will try the sequel.
I had this game on SNES as a kid and absolutely loved it. Played it into the ground. As an adult, it came to mind when I started speedrunning games... because what would be more fun than to speedrun massive KOEI games, right? The run was over 14 hours long when I first looked at it, and involved multiple massive adventure quests and quite a few bathroom breaks (also, the runner was French Canadian so I couldn't understand what he was saying). Took me a couple years to get up the courage to try something like this, but eventually completed it! Found out that the Genesis version -should- be the fastest, but got into competition over the NES version because that's the one the other people did. You would probably not be surprised that we accept absolutely no adventure quests in a speedrun :D Anyway, I really appreciated this video and wanted to share all that with you, and as of yesterday, we know the game can be beat in just over 5 hours. Maybe we'll get lower than that sometime, too.
This is my #1 game. I feel I have a mastery of this game. I can start with nothing and within a few minutes have a huge bank and everything is up to me. Biggest hint: Just buy sugar in Lisbon and sell in Bordeaux, then buy porcelain there and sell it back to Lisbon. Before the market changes due to your saturation, you'll have a huge amount of money and then can move to the Medetaranian and start with art and other higher-priced items.
This absolutely is one of my most favorite games. Were you aware there are multiple different endings? You don't necessarily have to completely fall In love and woo the kings daughter? You can also become a pirate or privateer and have multiple final ending cut scenes. This game is very similar to a choose your own adventure book, if those even exist anymore, all in all a game worth playing for many........ hours!
why does this video have so many dislikes? I have them as a browser extension and it's 384:221. He doesn't say anything particularly inflamatory, the video is fine, and it's not like his other videos have the same amount of hate, even his more controversial ones
I've noticed it too. Might just be a quirk where he didn't get that many likes in a set amount of time, so they interpret that as him getting a theoretical large number of dislikes.
You know something? It may be capitalism the game, but all those investments and poor business decisions are your fault, bud. All about the individual, and not groups. Anyway, on to watching the video. Edit: Ok, I was wrong. Every JRPG has the boat be the highlight where the game begins. This game IS the boat. Therefore, this is the best RPG ever created.

I thought I was the only one who stayed up playing this game till 1:30am 😂😂😂😂 the accuracy of this review!! It’s so brutally honest 💀💀💀 And it’s not wrong either. I laughed so hard! But I also relived the FEEEELZ of nostalgia. I love this game and new horizons and the hours of my life I’m never getting back! 😂
Dude. You and i are cut from the same cloth. I just picked this game up and can't wait to play it. Maps. Exploration. History. Empire Building. This looks like a fun and unique romp for a child nerd such as ourselves. I sunk lifetimes into Pirates! Civ1 & 2, Colonization, etc. I even played Drug Wars on my old Palm V in High School. First video of yours i've seen and i love the presentation. looking forward to exploring the rest of your channel!!
@stevencass8849 Thanks for your input on it! It honestly looks great. The only things I'm kind of intimidated about are how you can run out of time to complete the game and all the money management.
Uncharted Waters New Horizons (basically pt2) is a much better game. If you liked the original, guarantee you’ll like the second more. Bigger fleets, way more ship types (including Middle Eastern, Chinese, and Japanese designs), more ports, more secrets, more disasters, etc. There’s three different areas of fame, so you can play as a pirate, a trader, or am explorer...or just do all three. Different mates have different skills like gunnery, negotiation or celestial navigation, making some better suited for roles than others. You can even store fleets of ships in the capital cities.
My favorite thing to do in this game, was too see if I could sail to North America and see how many unique items I could find without being starved or shipwrecked.

@7:01 Its not as bad as it sounds. If you need to sell something in this region, you can buy these and then turn around and sell them in the Middle East for carpet or artwork. Theres not much profit, but you can still make some money if you know what youre doing and you have enough money to at least get back to Lisbon.
😂 i love your channel. There are bonus things to look for that you have to pause to really apppreciate. Like easter eggs. Like "ignore this door" in your drakkhen review and the fact you named one of your ships "SS cUm"😂😂
It's literally just Pirates! as a SNES game lol. I played that first and was getting deja vu. Pirates! might actually be a better game, which is saying a lot because UW games are excellent, but Pirates! doesn't have the timeless graphical style of these later SNES games.
Not quite. You need to start out as a trader in Uncharted Waters. You cant just run into one ship and take it if you can just win if you know how to fence the captain like in Pirates. There is also the hiring of mates and keeping them loyal. You only had 3 types of goods to trade, there are a LOT more in UW and there are some that are just worthless and unprofitable. Koei took Pirates and brought it to the next level. The issue is that 60,000 gold is a maximum.
This is easily one of my top ten favorite old school Koei games though there are many I prefer including the sequel. I don't think I ever played the SNES version though. I owned the NES port and played the Genesis port at a friend's house though.
What I didn't like about this game over new horizons is the cheat that makes it so easy to beat. If you keep on visiting the princess you'll eventually get tons of money and other stuff and then you'll win her heart without having to leave port.
I'm not even finished with this game yet but needless to say, it is taking up a TON of my time! I already expected this based on this video and the later one on New Horizons. I have 3 different sessions going on my RaspPi - the NES, SNES & Genesis; the last one being my fav so far as it moves so much faster. Other than that, there really aren't a ton of differences. The NES & SNES are almost identical when it comes to music & graphically, they are all pretty much the same with some slight differences. The past 3 weekends, I have put in almost 36 hours into this games and each time, I only meant to play for an hour or 2 and I limit my "gaming" to Saturdays -- Extreme lack of productivity these past weekends for sure! By the time I get to NH I can only imagine how much time I will end up putting into that one. As I mentioned on your newest video (Tactics Ogre), you already added a crap ton to your list already. The way you cover these types of games, not just UW 1 & 2, but pretty much every one you've ever done that I've watched/listened to -- the way you do it gets out the most information without wasting time. I saw you went over 7K the other day as well so congrats on that.... You'll break 20K before 2024 is over -- Mark my words.

I just starter this game. I also use notebook to keep track of trading.
My dad and I used to play this. I was his "first mate", and kept track of ports, in demand items and where enemy fleets generally were
That’s awesome! Great way to spend time with your Dad, and gain a love of history and history gaming.
This one, Nobanaga's Ambition, and P.T.O (Pacific Theater of Operations) were my holy trinity. Koei made absolutely immersive games.
Now they only do Dynasty Warriors, the exact opposite of this game.
