    I bought a 2006 Jaguar S-type, 4.2 V8. 4 years ago.
Still own it, fantastic car. Smooth, reliable, enough power.
And, very important, not expensive at all. Just normal parts, like tires, screen wipers, oil+filters etc
Only to be sure I changed water pump by 75k miles. Cost me € 290,-

These grand old vehicles are now in the modern classic class of their own. And if well looked after and maintained can still be very reliable and wonderful cars to drive. As the saying goes - They dont make them like that any more, and never will again.....

Something else to consider would be the car that I have , better in every respect to the ones here and more luxury than these three put together . My car is an ultra low mileage 1990 Japanese imported Daimler series 3 XJ12 (double six) cost £10k and with just 18k on the clock I have a vitualy brand new Daimler of the kind that ruled the world . Many such cars are coming back to the UK and I just spotted a 15k miler for just £5k on ebay You just cant go wrong, no rubber belts to replace , no perished seals on the doors or boot , all analogue so no digital nightmares . and no cylinder head gasket problems that the Rover k series will suffer from every year .

    • @athlonian11

That's a serious motor car you've bought and one that would be top of my "lotto win" list. Best of luck with it and many safe happy miles of motoring. In my humble opinion, the Pininfarina designed series 3 XJ is the prettiest saloon car of all time and probably the best riding car of all time too. And the Daimler double six variant was the ultimate series 3!!
PS: Hope you have some £££ left over to keep those twin tanks full! :D

I use to criticize luxury British and German cars. I compared the cost of operation to my Honda vehicles all of which I drove 350,000+ miles with less than $1,500 in repair/maintenane cost. I was wrong to make that comparison!!!! Luxury British and German cars are thoroughbreds not donkeys. It costs a lot more to buy and service a thoroughbred than a donkey. You pick what you want and you pay your price. You simply know what you like and can afford. Simple as that.

£4000 is too much for an S Type. For that money you can get a much better XF with a better interior, better gearbox, better build quality and it's better looking but then not much isn't better looking than an S Type.
    The S Type R is a different matter, £6000 for a 420bhp rocket
