It’s so funny, I raise Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats and never had much issue. No parasites, easy kidding, easy to train, and sweet personalities. Most of my does have been quiet, except one VERY loud doe. I did have a goat escape once or twice, but they were always easy to put back (and to be fair the fencing left a lot to be desired, not ideal at all),, but again, my climate and environment is completely different. The animals have lots of grass but also tons of weeds and browse, plus the weather is hot and dry. At the end of the day, I think it’s important to match your environment to the animals alongside your individual needs. I tried cows, but honestly, the heifer I bought ate a ton and had far too much spunk for an animal her size. The goats were always easier. That being said, love the video as always!

I think I cut it for time… (K will be annoyed I cut it 😅) but K did talk about climate in the video we recorded for this… we have seen such a difference in different areas and climates! And not even that extreme, even just CT vs PA we have had a big difference! Our goats in CT never had worm issues, and it’s because they were not in a hot, wet, grassy place. They were in a pine grove with zero grass, essentially a dry lot. Such a good point to talk about!

Good point, in Queensland Australia we’ve had a lot of rain/humidity/heat…I don’t think we’d manage the parasites as well for our ND goats if we weren’t using Livomol biowormer…it’s an extra expense but we feel it’s worth it :)

I have goats and live in Florida and it a little harder because we are the land of parasites. The one thing that really helped with the parasites was just having long grass. My vet tells everyone to leave your grass long its harder for the goats to eat the worm eggs, and when I say long grass I mean like almost knee high. Funny thing is I have Nigerians, Lamanchas and Sannas and the Nigerians are the best when it comes to worms.

We have battled 10/11 of these topics!! Just this kidding season....had 6 babies. 1 passed, 3 are bottle kids, 1 broke her leg, and 50% buck rate. Had to pull two of them because mom wasn't progressing. Then got the worst flu of my life the week they needed disbudded. Which means I missed the boat. 😐 But last kidding season, had 7 with no issues and only one buck. Just when you think it's all going smoothly and you got this ..BAMM! 😂😂😂

We crossbreed dairy breeds (mostly nubian some sanaan) with kiko (and the occasional spanish) goat then pull from the offspring for parasite resistance and dairy production.
The purpose of this is because dairy goat breeds tend to have very little if any parasite resistance themselves
While Kiko goats (which are a breed made up of European dairy goats and feral/wild goats in New Zealand) are extremely parasite resistant.
In addition to that parasite resistance, the Kiko is characteristically a more independent animal in terms of handling, kidding, and raising their young.
The slightly reduced dairy production (in some does but not all) more than makes up for the reduction in vet bills.

Love this video and agree education before hand is crucial before hand. I learned as much as I could before I got my goats. So far 4 years in only minor kidding issues which were easy to correct knowing what to expect and do. Although I now know why I have no parasite issues, I live in very sandy location where vegetation is scarce mostly a dry lot. Pretty lucky now that I know

Those things are all true . However after milking cows commercially for 30 yeas allow those things can be said about cows. Pulling a calf from a cow is much harder than pulling a goat kid. Cows can also get in trouble . They slip on the ice and break their legs. Never happen to a goat. Wehave had cows throw their uterus after calving. Cows sometimes get pinched nerves from calving. Own cows require a tractor to get up again.. the smaller size of goats make them much easier to handle. Just today we had a steer cast himself against the round bale feeder. Luckily we were able to roll him over and he got up. It took a lot of strength to roll a 800 pound steer over. I think if you do uour homework first and get a good enclosure beforehand the goats will work out for a beginner.

My neighbors goats would get out often after the fence was fixed over n over. They enjoyed my apple trees especially. It's very hard to grow fruit trees if these things are loose. I ended up spending another 450$ just to keep them out of my Orchard. My fiancee was scared of their horns by the new doors she replaced. She felt she had to call the aspca. The neighbor found a new home thank God! He would let them roam free as we're surrounded by alphalpha fields, they also enjoyed my garden 🤨. If around others they can be a nuisance if they get out. Thanks for mentioning that one 👍👍. If you have them please be vigilant. My one of two neighbors is a friend, goats can drive a wedge.

There personalities are what makes you want to have them around, they bond with you, there fun. no other farm animal are like goats. diatomaceous earth is a great parasite maintenance and don't let let eat grass down to the nub , rotate, sheep an goats together also not good, same life cycle of parasite

For worms and parasites have you tried giving pumpkins (essentially seeds) to your goats they are safe to be eaten by sheep/goats and people give it to deer a lot because it’s a natural dewormer. I also heard squash and cucumber seeds work too.

Some goats are definitely worse than others with some issues. Breed, age, gender and genetics have a lot to do with these issues. I have 3 nigerian dwarfs & 2 alpines. My nigerian dwarfs are louder, trouble makers & escape artists. Theyll scream even after the sun goes down which is very risky in our area due to predators. My alpines are quieter but struggle more with parasite infestations. They're also larger and super stubborn so I've definitely been dragged by my doe when she saw a plant she wanted across the yard while I was walking her to the milk stand. She also gave me a concussion because she got stuck in something at night & I was attempting to remove her & she panicked. Gotta love them though. 😂

Goats are browsers not grazers. They like to eat things that are in front of them without putting their head down. If you raise them this way you will have no need for dewormers. I don’t worry at all about fencing they are all train to electric fence. I have yet to have one escape in 8 yrs. If they have horns they can be hard on a fence rubbing against them but we solved this also by adding a few tpost around for them to use. As far as disease no more than any other livestock. As with any livestock you have to watch what you bring onto your property. You two found this out with your first cow. For kidding we find it much easier to pull a baby on a goat or sheep than it is for larger livestock. Milking a goat is a breeze as it only takes 5 minutes (from setup to cleanup) with a pump. What I like most about goats is they can still browse in the winter when there is no grass. This saves a lot on hay. We have now 12 goats and only use 40 bales of hay a year. This includes using it for bedding.

It's kinda funny. I'm sitting here thinking most of your reasons aren't so much of an issue for me (hoof trimming, over eating, worms, escaping fencing, etc), but then I realized why those just didn't seem to be such an issue to me - I've raised horses for 40+ years, so those are things I'm already well comfortable with dealing with. Huh. Interesting. I did go with Kiko's because of all the literature saying they're more parasite resistant, good moms, etc. And my fencing is all 5 ft horse fence, so in the 3 years I've had them, there have been no escapes at all.
My biggest learning experience was with kidding. I've had 3 does kid. #1, twins, one died w/in 24 hours. Doe was killed by a feral dog pack when the doeling was 3 weeks. Bottle baby. #2. triplets and overzealous LGD that helped with the clean up. first born was rejected. Bottle baby. #3. twins, first time doe. Had the kids and walked off. Took a couple of days of them locked up together with me holding her for them to nurse before she got with the program. Whew! Crazy times.

when I was a young woman, many years ago, I had a milking herd of registered Alpine goats. It's not that they are Hard to keep, they are just too smart for their own good. Once I had 5 electrified strands of wire fencing and they had already successfully eaten and destroyed the most expensive landscaping, they were content to stay in the pasture. To this day I don't think there is anything cuter than when a baby goat gets to it's feet the first time. The next thing it does is spring strait up in the air and twirl. We also used them to pull carts and kept a couple of big whethers to drive as a team.

I don't know what yall are doing to your goats but mine are not that bad😂 They can be naughty but you as the homesteader need to have the right kind of patience (i am not saying you aren't patient, but you have to have a certain type) and really good fences like not crappy old, barbed wire that is loose or rusty. Good fences will be great for you whether you keep the goats or not!!!!!! Don't get me wrong they are escape ARTISTS, but they can be great! But goats are not for everybody, just don't go saying cows are easier than goats because we have had our fair share of very naughty cows, they might not escape as much but they are way harder to get back where they are supposed to be! Love your channel so much good information! Just not about goats 😂 😂 kidding but everyone's experience with goats is usually a little different!

@@Homesteadyshow Sorry if it sounded rude, they can definitely be difficult but with the right patients, you can still own them, just like all the other homesteaders who have had difficulties with them and still have them! I have friends who own sheep, and they are very anti-goat! But they had bad experiences with them (and they have NOT goat-safe fences 😂) so we tease each other a lot about sheep and goats!

Many times people will interact with my goats and say, "oh, so they're like dogs that eat hay!" Hahahaha no! I wish they listened like dogs. Goats are so single track minded. If they see something they want to eat, it is hard stopping them. They have willpower to jump or go over anything. Especially bucks in rut. They are crazy animals, but I love them.

Grass is vital in the life cycle of parasites. Aaaaand that's why goats eat brush over grass every time. It's a natural mechanism for keeping the parasite load low. If you have a brushy property, a goat might be the animal for you.

I'm actually GLAD I have never liked goats. I don't like their smell, their milk or their meat and I certainly don't like their attitude! We had goats a few times on the family farm while I was growing up, and after I moved away, my mom got some Nubian milkers, but they've never stayed long...because turns out, no one likes them much! lol
    I. Want. Sheep!
We have chickens, rabbits, and Berkshires (love my piggies) and an old mare...but I can't wait to add some sheeps! I love lamb and sheep's milk cheese is divine! And they smell better than goats by a mile!

Here the saying is : a fence that doesn't hold water won't hold a goat.
Other things, if you buy a goat ask about injuries, ease of birth and so on, because some of this is hereditary. Clumsiness/injury prone for one, birthing problems ditto. Try not to buy such animals and cull the ones you find have it anyway. And yes often those are the goats most liked and/or have best other wanted traits. Some things you'll work around, but some things cannot be compensated for.
