    Instead of cotton, what would happen if you put a bit of steel wool in the chamber? Curious if it would just heat it up with repeated quick compressions.

      Not sure what would happen. I suspect that it won't work because steel wool has a lot of thermal mass. Repeat cycles won't help because you get cooling during the decompression. But it would be interesting to try. Then again, I'm always worried about using something too exothermic, as it might shatter the very thin glass tube!
