The level of self awareness it takes to write your own side the bad guy song, in which you describe it as the “devils song”, is a level I can’t hope to reach.
That is not why they named it devils song. The devil is remembered in war as an icon who claims the lives of the people who died. As the saying goes that there are no innocents in war. This is where the name teufelslied comes from.
Hitler, in January of 1939 (I believe?) gave a speech in which he basically accused the democratic nations of pushing the Germans to the point to which ‘we are deaf to all arguments of sentiment’ or something like that. Basically saying that if “we (Germans) are monsters, well, you made us.”
So the SS song having such a sense of anger and determination in it makes a lot of sense frankly. It’s exactly how they saw themselves: angry men who must do monstrous things to achieve the world they desired. Hardly a new way of thinking and plenty of times in history it’s correct. But not always. And not in the case of fascism.
