Fellow lab manager here for a large chemical corporation. This video randomly came across my RUclips feed (that wonderful algorithm 😄). Fun to see a day in the life of someone else in a similar position.
Thanks for sharing and God bless!
You seem to be a respectful and kind Lab. Manager . I can tell by the tone of your voice.. Can't sense any superiority complex approach at all. Your subordinates must have been lucky working with you. Keep it up.👍☺
Thank you for the kind words!
@@brontefletcher23 It's a pleasure👍
"Yes, mushrooms do have DNA" has to be one of the greatest understatements in history, lol. Love the vid by the way, you seem very passionate about your work!
Thank you very much, means a lot! Hahaha I have gotten quoted a lot for that now. Should put it on a shirt!
Love the vid, definitely do a day in the life as a student!!!
Feeling disappointed after finishing my internship in a big hospital that I do not get to work in some laboratory sections that I am good at like histopathology. I am now working in a limited lab with basic necessities (company). I'm sure someone can relate to this, especially if you just started your career. But I get guess nothing lasts forever, and almost everyone I know went through this stage in their life, with different lengths of course.
Don't know why I'm discussing this as it is not relevant to the video.
Don’t give up!
What a great video, your channel will blow up!
Thank you! 💕
Thank you so much for sharing this video! Is there any possibility to email you questions on how to approach education for this career path? I am considering going from premed to lab management and would appreciate guidance in this process!
Yes sure, you can find my email in my profile

This is so cool 👍
Hey. Thanks for the video i had a question (amongst the many others already here lol).. i was working in the lab with a new york state licence and it was valid till 2012.. i had switched fields into video and audio production for a lil while since 2011.. i was wondering how i can get back into the lab world. Miss that work lol
Good question! Many different ways. I always tell people never forget your past experience, save it in your back pocket if needed to be used for later. I think in your case it depends on how much you want to get back in. Do you want to do both video and lab work, or do lab work 100%. I think deciding there will determine what you can hop back into. If anything I would start looking up part time technician jobs at labs you are interested in? Being a lab assist is great. I think hitting the internet and seeing what is out there that fits your schedule or wants!
@@brontefletcher23 hey .. so i actually opted to go for a part time position and got employed .. i got 2 offers with almost the same pay just few cents apart .. one is just PCR and the other is microbiology. Same distance from home.. so im torn apart from which one to take lol.. but thanks so much for the resoonse .. right now theres a good demand for lab techs and saving the experience in the back pocket just in case is definitely a good thing.. thank you and keep posting
Wow we are the same age, but I'm just in my entry level degree job. You're already a Manager
It helped that I had a vast history in my younger years, but anything is possible! If I could give advice on anything grasp at any opportunity for growth!
That's so cool!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Please, can I ask you a question? Who is responsible for preparation for ISO accreditation? Or you don't participate in those?
ISO accreditations a lot of the time from my experience are handled my quality assurance departments of the company. They handle a bulk of paper work and ensure we are following the proper guidelines in order to operate properly. I would have to say however, I do believe that many people can attribute to this. As a manager I have had to ensure our tools and equipment is operating properly. I would need to contact quality control department or the appropriate individuals if I needed assistance in getting things certified.
@@brontefletcher23 thank you so much!
I honestly believe that such paper work should be done by quality control department and not by laboratory technicians, but here in my country that's often not the case.
Ive noticed a good amount of people become lab managers 5-10 years after being a technologist. How did you receive this position?
Experience in the field, science background, and working up in the company. Being a lab technician first helps because you learn the ways of the lab, skills and the projects at hand. A lot of the time to become a manager companies require a bachelors if not higher.
@@brontefletcher23 I am almost done with my bachelors right now and should be doing internships soon. Im surprised you have high school students but i think it depends where you live and if its available. My school is a college so I only see college students. Wish my high school had something like this(:
Do you have the ASCP as well? I think its usually required especially to be a lab manager but may vary per company perhaps
@@melissawhalen728 we allow high school students to come and intern with us a few hours a week, it’s also through an application process. Generally we take students who are interested in the sciences. Not many companies do this, and it does depend.
@@melissawhalen728 ASCP is generally required for medical lab research and clinical pathology, I do not have this certification. My lab is agriculture sciences so I have different certs. If you do go more medical lab research base it is recommended to have, especially for supervisor and more management positions.
That ispires me a lot since we r few in my country working in labs
can you tell me how is your prespiction as lab manger to hire a new employee at your lab?? specifically what a lab manager is looking for?
My specialty is MLS ... pls :>
What a lab manager looks for depends on the position they are trying to fill. For positions that require a specialty then we would need upper level education and experience. I work in a microbiology genetics lab.
White coat optional? Osha is on the way
I want to become work in lab I am currently a medical student in AIIMS. Love from India 🙏🙏
Love from me!
I'm a recent Bioscience graduate and am finding it difficult to find a job. The only experience I have is from university. All of my applications have been unsuccessful so do you have any tips for a successful CV 😊
Congrats on recently graduating!
With any CV it should be clear, concise and easy to read. But to enhance it without much experience other than university, my advice would first be to highlight the qualities about yourself that are most impressive. Those that would help fulfill the position you are trying to apply for. Sell yourself!
LIst skills that you obtained during your time at univeristy! Were you involvedin any extracirculars or volunteer anywhere? If so include those too! Did you win any awards or were successful in a group graduation project?
Can you talk about salary for a lab manager?
I have seen and heard large ranges of salary offers. I think it manly comes down to the type of lab, experience, and qualifications. I have seen ranges from 5 to 6 figures. Those in the 6 figures that I have seen have either been apart of huge pharmaceutical companies or have years of experience and have high positions in the company.
Thank you so much for the video.
I'm soon going to be a lab technician, specifically field lab technician, where we'll be doing the microbiological and chemical analysis of environmental matrices such as soil and water.. and I have no experience in that, just a bio degree and a chemistry degree with some few experiences in a food Microbiology lab, and organic chemistry lab ..
Is this somehow related to your work?
And I'm curious whether or not I'll be doing the same lab experiments as yours or not?
What's your advice?
Thanks a lot. Hope to see more videos.
I am glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the support! I do hope to make more videos in the immediate future.
That is very exciting about starting soon in the field. You will be surprised how much your education will take you through this journey, even with no experience. You will learn so much very quickly!
In terms of my work that I have done, my main focus was microbiology, agriculture and genetics. I had to do analysis on diffierent substrates, and genetic screenings of products that we would make. We would also delvelop new safe/clean production area processes, and data analyze organic compenents going into our products.
My advice is to keep an open mind, and trust that your education was not a waste. College teaches you how to use your resources, and to be analytical. Always ask yourself why you are doing something, don't just do something to do it. You will understand the process so much better! And be safe! Always ask questions!
@@brontefletcher23 thank you very much for your detailed reply. This is inspiringly beautiful!
Your work focus is also very interesting to me, and just by watching some of your videos I could have an idea about it.
Thank you very much for your pieces of advice, I will keep them in mind and consider them in work.
I really hope you can make more and more videos! Not only your science-related videos but also your other videos are wonderful. Your vibe is unique and you're spontaneous, which made me watch all your videos. Hope we get to live more moments with you on RUclips. 💕
Hi, how can a college student( bio major) intern at a lab like yours? What do you usually look for when you recruit them?
First you need to find labs that you are interested in, and once you do reach out. Let them know what you are looking for or ask if they offer any opportunities such as interning.
For me in the hiring process I look for work ethic, communication skills, and team willingness. I also like to have them express their strengths and explain to me how this would bring value to the lab. Most of my technicians began as interns, and are in college, but they bring such a different variety to the team. Again not every hiring manager and lab are the same, but I always like to remind those to highlight their qualities that they think make them unique.
@@brontefletcher23 Thank you❤️
Any advice for a computer science major thinking about switching from the software development career field into the medical laboratory science field? My challenge is trying to survive financially while making the transition.

As like u , am also starting job with coffee.... 😀
Where can I find more about the research you're doing on the mushrooms?
You won’t be able to find my name on published work for this company. You can find a basic run down on their website. I work on developing the mushrooms that are in grocery stores
Can I apply in your lab?😁
I think I am going to go into this instead of pharm school. Pharmacy is just one big sinking ship. It makes me sad...but I really don't want to be leaving with that much debt and not be guaranteed a job. the other is maybe optometry??? But I have never cared about the eyes.
If you never cared about the eyes, I don’t think you will enjoy it very much in that field. Great thing about working in a lab is the number of avenues you can branch off into, best of luck!
Do you mostly sit or stand in your job, I have some lower back problems so I prefer sitting..
I have chronic back problems as well, it’s not fun. For my job it’s a mixture between the two. Great thing is a lot of hoods can be converted to standing if your lab has them!
@@brontefletcher23 Oh okay. I'm sorry you have back problems too, it's really an annoying thing... Hope it gets better ❤️

Hello, thank you for this video. I have a question for u that I hope u can answer.. so basically while doing my master degree I started working a little in the lab for my thesis and then I discovered that I tend to have shaky hands while doing simple tasks, especially when the lab manager is looking at me.. this really paralyzed me and is now being my nightmare and I'm scared now to apply for any other master or PhD :( My hands don't shake in basic life tasks even if i'm doing it in front of people, it's just in the lab :() Do you think that it might be just the lack of experience? And that I can go over it? (Sorry for my English I'm not a native)
Your English is pretty good, I understood just fine! Thank you for the comment as well. I will give you my advice for what worked for me, and has helped me in the past. First easy solutions are watching the caffeinated beverages or medications that you might be on that could cause shaking. Not everyone has this, but I like to say it just in case.
As for shaking during procedures in the lab, I personally feel its a combination between the experience you have doing something and your mind being nervous. As we say "psyching yourself out" basically means you are worried and thinking too much about it. Practice and gaining confidence in doing skills make you less nervous. In the beginning when I was a student, I always had nerves when I was training with other professionals. Over time doing the techniques over and over again, I was more confident in myself, and less worried about how else saw me doing it. When you learn a new procedure, you are worried about every little step, instead of doing the constant motion at first. Reading it in a book is not the same then actually doing the procedure itself. What helps me is watching the procedure done by someone else, or on video, then practicing it. Now being a scientist I am less nervous doing it in front of people because I know they aren't grading me. What has helped me the most is telling myself "everyone has to be watched at some point, even your teachers and other scientists when they were young". They had to be graded and watched too to make sure they were doing the procedure correct. It happens with everyone!
@@brontefletcher23 this happened to me too and sometimes I can’t stop thinking I’ll mess up so I started practicing (I used micropippettes) I’d do it in my free time I’d fill it with water and practice over and over until i felt comfortable this shake used to happen to me because I get nervous it used to happen a lot even during exams so I knew I was nervous because im not skilled enough try to figure out the reason and practice makes perfect too!
I know that I had shaky hands when I first started in a lab. If your hands are really shaky where you can’t micropipette, try to stabilize it with your other hand using a finger. Then once your more comfortable you, begin to just do it with accuracy. My research professor in college showed me that, and it works crazy well.
Ugh... I am experiencing this too. It super sucks especially when ure working with a harsh/strict supervisor and they get mad because I am nervous which ends up making me more nervous and tremor/shaking. I also find myself more relaxed when I get night duty where there are not too many people watching.
I don't think I already get over it, but if I can give u some advice it's super normal to get nervous over something new to it. And if u happen to have an unsupportive spv like me (instead encourage me to keep trying, she's blabbering to everyone abt how incompetent I am) just let her be! Our job is already stressful enough to overthink abt everything. Cheer up!
Good work
Thank you!!
JOB in VATABRATA is YES
I am also a microbiologist 🤟
Hello, thank you very much for sharing your experience with us ❤️ I have a question, I am a recent graduate of environmental engineering, but I want to work in a lab, is there any possibility to do it or should I take a different course?
Of course! It may take a little time to hunt down depending on if there are any labs or research facilities near you. I worked in agriculture myself in a research and development lab. I would suggest reaching out to labs and see if they offer any positions for a job or even just an internship. Some may require you to take a few courses but I suggest before jumping right into courses reaching out first.
I love your vid ❤️
Thank you!
How can i apply laboratory technician
Where are you from?
Hello...explain as student S internship what are they allow to do in lab. Etc..
Depends on what the internship allows for in each lab, but in my lab I allow them to be very hands on and independent. They master the basics then build up their skills from there. They can be doing anything from aseptic technique to DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis.

What would be the best degree to get to work in the microbiology lab? I’m assuming microbiology…. Not sure though lol, pls help! Thanks!
Personally I think it depends on the specialty of the lab. Yes a microbiology degree would be ideal, but I feel the true key is labatory experience. If you are going to work in a micro lab, asceptic technique is especially important, and that requires practice. Great degrees to have also are biology based because you have some background from schooling, but lab experience is a main component.
@@brontefletcher23 understood. So what exactly would you pick to get the experience required and to make yourself competitive. Can you have a degree in regular biology and still work in the lab?
@@alexanderfisher8241 To me competitive doesn't mean the best grades and top of the class. Hard work yes, but what makes you unique? What sets you apart from other applicants?
