Good for you doing Dave Ramsey!! Maybe you could offer a bouquet subscription to your coworkers and that would give you a few dollars for seeds. It'll be a good learning experience to keep expenses lower and make a profit! Northlawn Flower Farm started with only $50 worth of seeds her first year. Now that would take self-control :)

Great video Jesse! I forgot that you used a planner! I use "The Happy Planner" planners. I love how you can customize it, and insert graph paper or other lined paper, or blank sheets, etc. you can even print sheets, and cut them to size and insert them in. I have lots of graph paper sheets that I put in to plan out beds and things. I also love how you can take the paper out and write then put it back in, I hate having the rings in the way when I write, being left-handed! Anyways, I think you did great on sales! If you keep selling more and more each year, and cut back on the spending on things that aren't making you money, you'll be turning a profit in no time! My goal is also to do the same thing- to be able to grow this business without having a ton of debt to pay off... It's easy to see what the larger, more successful farms are doing and to get caught up in it, and feel like we need to be doing the same thing, though. But I have to remind myself, that I don't need to buying 1000's of tulips, when the year before, I only sold a couple tulip bouquets... I don't need to till an entire acre for growing cut flowers, when I'm not selling the # of flowers to demand growing in that large of a space... Year over year, as my sales grow, then I will grow more, but I don't need to go from 0 to 60 in my 1st couple years...
Now that doesn't mean I can't feed my desire and love for ranunculus by buying a couple hundred just for myself- but I need to KNOW that they are going to be for myself, & KNOW that I'm not going to sell hundreds of $'s worth of ranunculus. I can't lie to myself, and say that they're "for the farm"
😁 For the amount of bouquets I sell, I really only NEED about 20 ranunculus... lol.

Hey girl, when it's a struggle, it for sure is a real struggle. I got caught up once too. Social media was shoveling ideas and plans into my mind about being bigger, better, stronger. The best compost, make your own, the biggest and best sales for seeds, trays, soil blockers and on and on. I caught the flower farm bug hard and did all kinds of wacky crap. Super early seedlings, sales, tulips sales..ugh. looking back it was exhausting. Like you I work 40 hrs a week. I started my flower growing lifestyle over covid when I had time. I made a few hundred dollars off the end of my driveway and 2 farms in the area but thier demand was ridiculous 😑 and as 1 person, I just couldn't. I have learned now, year 4.. use what you have, do what you can handle and enjoy. I grow flowers now to enjoy them and make full stunning bouquets and still sell them. I cut back on space too. More space meant more work. I love watching you because you are realistic. I love Serina too, but feel her and Ian are getting too lost in thier own minds and need to just focus and remember how to enjoy the flowers instead of running ragged. My word of advise, don't let time burden you. Remember the joy of flowers. Happiness first, money will follow xo Don't try and manage your life, let go and relax. Focus xo Love, Mellisa @ivyandashboutique

Thank you Mellisa! I'm slowly learning that lesson. I really get enjoyment from doing to farmers market and being known as the flower lady around ruston. I'm hoping as I scale back, and start to concentrate on fewer plants, that I can manage it better.

A lifestyle business is simply part of your daily life! I love that you are receiving love and being recognized by your town as the Flower Lady, that's a great title! You are the face of your lifestyle business, you bring the light and the joy, you engage and take the time to bring happiness to others and people are excited to engage with you!! Like me!! I just think you are fantastic and it's not because of the flowers, it's You. You are a relatable woman, who works, who has dreams, a vision, who looses her mind sometimes..high five to that!!! I'm the same way. You could probably sell 1 dahlia wrapped in beautiful greenery, add a tag that says, Jessie's favorite. Tell people about the process and meaning behind your favorite fliwer and the would sell!! You are your business and you are really doing a fantastic job learning naturally how to run a sole propeitership/lifestyle small business 👏 I too, hit a brick wall...it's ok, you are not broken 😀 I'm cheering for you!!

Hi and Happy 2023. You need to remember you are only 2 years into flower farming and you shouldn't expect financial wellness yet. I was doing Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace" before Dave Ramsey started it. It does lower the stress. Pay yourself first and then pay everyone else and you'll be okay. Serena on "You Can't Eat the Grass" is going into year 5 and hopes to make money this year. She went from an extremely negative $ amount to a negative $5K for 2022. Do what she does when a bouquet doesn't sell: hang it upside down, dry it, and then sell it as a dried bouquet. After they crack color, pull the tulips up by the bulb and store them that way and they store for weeks. Then you remove the bulb when you're ready to make the bouquet. Flowers that break apart, dry the petals and use for potpourie (can't spell it). Then sell the bags of it. Before I moved and I needed display buckets, I found the Walmart plastic trashcans that look like marble and got a couple dozen on sale for $1.92 each. Ok, it's a pain to not have a handle, but I don't need the handle to display the flower bouquets. I can use any bucket to collect flowers in. Find ways to save money, but don't lose your business because you haven't yet made money. You have to have patience. You make beautiful bouquets. You Tube (which I don't do) takes time. Every video you should request viewers to "like" and "subscribe". I remember when you were trying to get 1K subscribers and now you have tripled that. The more subscribers you have, the more watch time you'll have, and the more you'll make. From what I understand, it comes in spurts. Everytime you watch someone's video, make a comment and mention your channel too. Every time you write an email (personal one), put your RUclips channel link. You'll get there. Congratulations on working on getting out of debt. Think of all the interest you won't be paying! Keep your chin up and know you're on a great path.
