Fair play to Jermaine. Could use those excuses mentioned by Jake but admitting he didn't do enough or wasn't good enough to compete with the quality of others. Very humble. 21 caps is better than a lot
At least his honest a lot of players would be happy with his career. I would
Humble lol. He spent 5 minutes saying he was better than he was
I agree that 21 caps is amazing and more than many but... he did keep making excuses.
He blamed Newcastle for not getting caps when he made most of his caps when there.
Even if he never got injured and played at his peak for his whole career, he'd still not have played many competitive England games. He played 4 competitive games and only started 1. There's a reason he didn't play for those bigger teams and it was because he was never good enough.
Very successful career to have played in the Premier league but im not even sure why they are talking about it, he over achieved if anything
@@Munchman1 I agree, he was a little harsh on Newcastle to be fair, stating that his level lowered week after week when he returned to the club. In his first two of only three seasons at Newcastle they finished 3rd and 5th. That's not bad is it? Whilst I am aware that it is very very easy to criticise people from afar on here, and I have not achieved anything like he has done, so I will say well done to him. I would also like to say that he could have been a hell of a player for Newcastle week in week out, which would have lead to more opportunities at England level, don't forget he was playing behind Shearer at this time too. For me, he didn't try hard enough to do this, and expected to be playing in a 'bigger' team full of 'winners', he wouldn't lead the midfield or the team to improve.
He did well overall and I do hope that he does not live with any regrets, because he shouldn't and they will just damage him in the long run.
He was at Newcastle for four seasons, three of those seasons resulted in top five finishes, two involved Champions League campaigns. The players ‘below his level’ included Alan Shearer, Gary Speed, Laurent Robert, Nolberto Solano, Kieron Dyer, Craig Bellamy and Shay Given (all of whom contributed far more to the team during that period than this passenger).
When he left Newcastle he was only 22 and had the vast majority of his career still ahead of him. He won 7 more England caps (having been on 14 when he left Newcastle), played one more season of Champions League football and only made over 30 appearances in the league on one occasion (2008-09 season).
His best years were at Newcastle, when he left his career was on a gradual decline blighted by injury (retired at 31) and poor, anonymous performances. He didn’t become the player he set out to be because he wasn’t good enough. Not mentally strong enough to drive a team forward, not talented enough to impact games.
Newcastle and Sir Bobby Robson gave him the perfect platform to succeed and now he’s sh*tting on them. He’s either got an awful memory or he’s hoping everyone else has. Newcastle might not be a great side now but they weren’t bad when Jenas was there. Revisionist pr*ck.
Jermaine should still be proud it’s hard to become a footballer
Yes. I mean he played in the EPL, got capped and scored some good goals. Most lads could only dream of that.
Jhardwork Pays off 100%
mediacenter man That's why they work hard to get there in the first place. What's your point?
Humble guy. Really good pundit and as for his career... well he scored some very memorable goals for Spurs.
Irrelevant. The statistics don't define your internal satisfaction.
21 caps for England? Considering how hard it is to become a professional footballer I’d be immensely proud if I were him
He hasn't acheieved anything, plus, to play for England isn't that great.....it's not exactly Brazilian level.
Apple Bee it's probably easier to play for Brazil though. England just choose the same players no matter how much they fail and no one else gets a good chance
I would be too
Lockie Ashley-Holligan Hes not proud because he knows he robbed them caps
Apple Bee better than all of us commenting on this video and wishing we’d have that chance have gotten
As a pundit I have always enjoyed listening to Jermaine. There is no bullshit. His analysis of the game is always on point, and his inside knowledge having played at the top level is fascinating. This just shows what a humble guy he is compared to a lot of the big egos. And seems to be fairly intelligent too. Maybe that actually worked against him as a footballer, but he's a great guy to listen to.
Yup, he's worth listening to
Good points.
nah hes very bias and bitchy about clubs he doesnt like, hes not always on point lol
Fully bias towards spurs
He thinks games are won by possession....
Jermaine has achieved a lot more than thousands of other footballers who never reach the top level and never win an England cap....
Think it's the fact that people like Sir Bobby Robson - who managed Barcelona - said he was one of the best players he had ever seen, and the potential to do great.
johnnybluegas So what ? Is he somehow better than us ?
big virgil get the stick out your arse. no he's not better than us. but talent wise he was better than a lot of other professionals
it's all relative. True as your statement is, Jenas had probably been told that he could realistically be world-class from a young age, which shaped his identity. I wonder if anyone asked Stevie G the same question? Jenas considers his achievements with Liverpool to be in a different class, but when Gerrard reflects on his own career, does he more recall winning FA Cups and the Champions League, or not winning the Prem title?
exactly, messi and ronaldo are supposed to be the best players in the world and they haven't got a single england cap between them
Fair play for being honest, but Jenas was not a special player. He did well for himself
Exactly, he was bang average
Shakib ahmed yeah he still made it professional
Jhardwork Pays off So has Yaya Sanogo and Bebe. What's your point?
Shakib ahmed He was a proper goalscoring midfielder at Newcastle at a young age. One of the best youngsters in the country, but never pushed on.
Khal Drogo wat about yaya he was above average
He’s the realest, great conversation this video
Lewd Bandana dont be that guy
I appreciate the honesty. There was one moment though where I sensed Stevie might have taken issue. There were several years when Stevie had to carry Liverpool and listening to Jermaine saying that he just "dropped down to the level of the other players" shows the difference between the mentality of them both. It is understandable and perfectly human but it is also what separates the good from the great
Yeah great point. Stevie never let anything other than himself determine how well he played
That's a good point, though one advantage Gerrard had over Jenas was having a manager who had a winning mentality over almost all of the time he played for Liverpool.
Bit different; Liverpool never won the Prem when Stevie was there but they were still always in the CL, having big games with Utd, Chelsea etc whereas Newcastle were trying to avoid relegation and were usually mid table.
@@brentmeistergeneral6074 okay, fair enough, Jenas was obviously right to just give up and accept mediocrity then... I understand now.
lets be serious here, Liverpool had a number of seasons where they finished 7th, 8th and if we are really honest, Liverpool WITHOUT Gerrard were mediocre a lot of the time. Having Gerrard meant two things
A> Liverpool had a world class player who could turn games
B> Having Gerrard in the team enabled the gaffer to attract certain players who admired and respected him and wanted to help improve Liverpool's prospects
C> Gerrard demanded more from those around him, because nobody ever doubted his loyalty, desire and belief. They upped their game.
That's the big difference between a good player and a GREAT player.
@@TheComputec I’m not denying Gerrard isn’t great, he’s my favourite player, but Newcastle were lucky to be mid table and were often just avoiding relegation.
Personally I think people forget how promising Jenas was. He was the next big thing and had he gone to a top team he’d have flourished. He, unlike many so called CMs, could do everything. He could attack, defend, pass, score whereas a lot CMs do just one or two of those.
Agree to disagree!
Jenas was a good player for sure. He can take pride in his career, and I feel he's actually a really top pundit
Alan shearer doesnt
He's a top Pundit, for me one of the best
@@bobbyfirmino6562 wdym
Yeah watch him whenever bottlejob spurs lose talks utter nonsense 😆
Love his honesty. Young players should watch this and start taking responsibility for their own performances rather than blame everything else for not performing. This is a huge problem with today’s generation
It's the opposite of that problem. They give an apology, take the blame, and then make no steps to improve so what they apologised for doesn't happen again. They keep hitting the same walls, say "sorry" to the fans, rinse and repeat.
To have the capacity to be this honest, open and humble is extremely rare and brave. Well done Jermaine.
Brutally honest. To be fair.
Tinter Trailers
It's funny because when he was at Newcastle, they finished 4th, 3rd, and 5th and played in the champions league as well as reaching the semi's of the then Eufa cup. His comments about coming back to a struggling Newcastle team and his levels being so much higher than everybody else's is laughable. He ended up with the nickname of "the crab" at Newcastle because he always went sideways or backwards and no Macca, it wasn't because the players at Newcastle didn't fancy it or whatever. He played in the same team as Shearer, Bellamy, Laurent Robert, Nobby Solano, Kieron Dyer etc etc. Hardly players who stood still and couldn't be bothered to make attacking runs. He started well at Newcastle but rapidly turned into one of the most negative, defensive thinking midfielders who initially turned up as an attacking midfielder. He was always linked with a move to Arsenal, not a single fan was shocked when he ended up at Spurs who the previous 4 seasons had finished inside the top 10 only once. He wanted away from Newcastle because he claimed it was like living in a goldfish bowl. Now he claims it's because his level was sooo much higher than any other player at Newcastle......Do me a favour JJ.
He speaks so eloquently as a pundit. One of the better speaking pundits around. Very honest to himself to what he could have achieved but is well grounded and humble.
A thoughtful and eloquent young man and an expert in his field.
I favour Arsenal, but we all have players we know we will enjoy watching. Jenas was one such.
And on the couch he speaks clearly, makes sense, engages the listener, doesn't preen and leaves the viewer knowing more, seeing more and understanding more.
Top man.
He wasn't playing with Joelinton, Emile Kraft and Having Manquillo under Steve Bruce.. it was Shearer, Laurent Robert, Patrick Kluivert, Nobby Solano, Craig Bellamy and Kieron Dyer (who incidentally was a England regular) under Ex Barcelona manager and serial winner Sir Bobby Robson. Just excuses.
He's achieved more than most. Respect to him
Jermaine has always come across as a throughly decent bloke with alot of empathy. He was a bloody good player too.
Honest appraisal by him. Its a shame he could have had a good career if not for injuries, i remember when we had him down villa, nice guy, decent player but so injury prone
I always felt with JJ that he has a very energetic box to box player who scored some great goals for Spurs, but just lacked consistency. Was also a time when Spurs mainly scored all our goals through Keane and Berba, then Bale, Modric and Van der Vaart came on the scene and it was so hard for him to get back in the team. If it hadn't been for Steve McLaren, England would've got to Euro 2008 and would've played a big in tournament for England around that time and start of Capello's reign...
Yeah he was too inconsistent. I guess that's what Jermaine means by when he says he didn't do enough.
He was never fully fit at Spurs
Wilfred Zaha he’s a player that going down this path he has a amazing chance to be on of the best player in the world need to move now
I wouldn’t say that many world class teams want Zaha, I respect Jermaine but I don’t think it was the same for him
Tooo inconsistent zaha is.....he can have 1 superb game but will go missing for the next 4
Um, no.
Wilf is not world class.
People confusing a few qualities with class.
Zaha is palace material he aint no big club player he's well suited for palace exclusively
Have a day off!
Maca was devastating at Liverpool..united feared him whenever he played them
I respect Jermaine, because he willingly took part in a documentary of anti-knife crime which is so dangerous.
The Jenas that left Nottingham Forest was a huge talent. Under Sir Bobby he developed and then he had a string of average managers. At the end of the day he was a quality PL player who played for good clubs and is probably in the 0.01% of people who have ever kicked a ball in anger.
This is the most insightful conversation I've ever heard from from pundits. Beats the platitudes on match of the day
Massive respect for Jermaine here, he speaks some real truth.
I remember when i was living up in Newcastle and some lads from my team told me that they'd been out on the Quayside, and that they'd seen Jenas (it was 04/05 when he was at Newcastle) and that he was the nicest bloke, happy to have a chat and a picture. Seems like a really nice fella
Same, i saw him in nottingham queuing in a bar / dj night. He just left the queue as it was full instead of playing the "Big I Am" card.
Nice to hear someone on television in 2018 with some integrity.
jermaine is a good player. mcmanaman and Gerrard were world class.. maybe if he had a chance at Chelsea, Liverpool or something it could have been a different story
Mcmanaman wasn't world class. He was good, but not World level.
remi moses hmmm maybe... though he did win lots of trophies and he wasnt just a bit part player at madrid.. he must have been doing something right if he was playing many season after season for real madrid.
Mcmanaman was an important part of Real Madrid's resurgence on the European stage. He wasn't their best player, of course, but to be an important part of that is very special.
When Zizou himself says the 2000s-era Real royally f**ked up after selling Makelele and Macca, he isn't exaggerating. Makelele and McManaman were Real's most overlooked names of that generation, yet easily the most important in their squad. Neither was a Zidane, a Figo or [OG] Ronaldo; they would never capture the local hearts like hometown hero Raul, or the media attention like Beckham.
But they were their teammates' favorite players. Why? Because they made everyone else play better and kept the whole squad in sync. Makelele provided the defensive base in midfield to get the attack going. Macca got along with everyone and united the team, in a dressing room filled with instability and infighting. He was also forced to play a variety of positions under increasingly reduced playing time, due to the new galactico signings taking his place. Given these factors, I would say he was the most well-liked guy at Real, eventually becoming their most versatile during his time there, due to the circumstances.
his final ball was dogshit.
What an outstanding bout of honesty. In a game which is full of waffle and nonsensical one liners. It’s refreshing to hear someone speak truthfully and openly about how they feel about football.
Exceptionally honest and humble. Fair play. Excellent analysis. How could he had played more when the fabulous Lampard, Gerald, and others were shining?!?
JJ didn't actually play that many games for Forest but he's one of the most popular Forest players of the last 2 decades. We love him. Always humble and down to earth, but low key had a ton of skill.
I had no idea he played for Forest, I like Jenas though.. seems sound and wasn’t a Gerrard or Lampard but didnt have to be, he played his part
Forest academy graduate. Notts lad. Was obvious he was going to the prem soon after he started playing for our 1st team. Too good for the championship. Good prem player. We've not seen many of those in a long time
A lot of people giving Jermaine props here, but it seems like 90% of this is him saying; he didn't have success because he didn't play for a great team.
What an honest sensible conversation about top level football. Looks good, speaks good, no wonder he is now presenting on TV.
I’m sure Alan Shearer appreciates these comments!
God bless Jermaine for his gracefulness and humility. It takes strength to give such an honest public account of oneself. And Jermaine is a winner because of his great character, great characters do not point fingers, they take full responsibility and that is the sign of a true man.
I could listen to Jermaine Jenas speak all day long. Such a decent, honest and articulate young man. Very down to earth. BUT, he shouldnt be so bloody hard on himself!!
Jermaine Jenas always the king of the sideways pass. I'm a massive Spurs fan and this guy frustrated the hell out of me more than anyone!
U look like a spurs fan 🤢
He ended up with the nickname "the crab" at Newcastle as he always went sideways.
Have all the time in the world for Jermaine Jenas. Great personality, successful, considered. Wise beyond his years also. Brilliant man to have in the sport.
It’s neither fair nor balanced to judge an individual’s career in 5 minutes and 4 seconds. But it’s safe to say we know a lot more about Jermain’s character - humility, honesty, and balance. This should make everyone who watches pause.
Perhaps if he was good enough, he'd actually be playing for one of the top clubs
tbf man utd wanted him at one point and newcastle were a top 4 team when he was there under bobby robson
Well he clearly was; he played for a England at 19 so he wasn’t bad!!
A Honest an Humble Man...👍🏾
That was brutally honest. Fair play to him.
very honest from jenas. I'm not a huge fan of him as a pundit but its nice that he doesn't make excuses.
2 words Alan Shearer
He played because his quality shone through despite playing for Newcastle
He joined Newcastle in an era when they were title contenders. They declined over the next 10 years but were still in the top 5. After he retired, Newcastle was sold to Mike Ashley and here we are today with current Newcastle.
tlst9999
Correct Newcastle was declining but Shearer was still class.
@@abdiessa8383 He was also a regular with england and was surrounded by good quality players whereas Jenas...can't really say the same.
Humble guy. Rate jenas as player and a pundit. True quality to pick holes in ur own career
Yeah well he got to be in the movie goal so I would call that a good career
Massive disrespect to Newcastle. Claims it's down to the individual yet seems to be almost blaming Newcastle for his failures
Jenas must feel like nothing sitting next to McManaman and Gerrard. Huge respect for Jenas as a player after hearing his honesty. He's good at the pundit game, one of the best on tv at the moment.
Big fan of Jermaine. Such an articulate honest chap.
Injuries ruined him, he was a top player, his style of play suited the 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 modern formations of today rather than the 4-4-2 formations that was in vogue between 2000-2008.
He would start in England's midfield today.
No spurs fan but Jermain Jenas is one of the very few ex football pundits who has a brain and can string a decent sentence together.
Very articulate conversation. He should be on the air.
I have respect for JJ what a difficult interview and so honest credit to him for his honesty but it was unfortunate for him that he had the likes of gerrard lamps etc fighting for that position
I'd rather be a good or ok player with a career to look back on with humble eyes, than one of the best players with an egotistical and ungrateful personality. I have huge respect for Jenas, he's such a great pundit and role model.
He was a bit unlucky with injuries. There were also lots of strong central midfielders at time. Lampard, Gerrard, Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes, Gareth Barry....
Real talk goes a long way and your honesty as everyone says on here is much appreciated. Overall nice guy 👍
Jenas was playing at a good newcastle who were pushing for europe at the time. Worked under Bobby Robson. Don't quite see his argument there
he quite clearly says once Robson left and things began to slip
Majority of people never reach the heights that he has should be happy that he's reached excellence in sport.
He is right , he could have been so much more but still he should be proud of what he's done outside of the game.. since his career in football ended hes done a lot to be proud of.
Jermaine is being honest but I would tell him he should be proud regarding his football career 🙏🏾👍🏾👌🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
The guy was a professional in a career where he had a 0.012% chance of playing in the Premier League, and even less chance of playing for his country. He should be very proud of his achievement.
0.016 chance.
McManaman's analysis of players getting held back by their teammates sounded like it was for Ozil still
Get ready for another blasting from Shearer Jenas lad
Jj was a great player.im a liverpool fan (die hard) and I would of had him at Liverpool. Sounds like a honest down to earth person.big yourself up sir
Love the guy cleaning in the background
He’s still absolutely stealing a living. Cannot believe he gets to appear and commentate on TV. He has all the charisma of a carrier bag.
Harry Kane should leave spurs if he wants no regrets in he’s career
I disagree. Spurs are on their way of becoming a super club. There is no question about it right now, Spurs are better than Arsenal. Naturally after losing Bale and Modric they were gonna suffer for a bit but now they are well on their way. I would argue Kane staying at Spurs is a better decision than Totti staying at Roma. Chelsea fan here by the way.
I think they will win it and they will proboly make great summer signings where its needed. If Kane stays they might be up there with City.
flying dutchman123 And a small shout for the Champions League especially after their performances against the big guns in the competition this season. Much worse sides have won the Champions league than Spurs.
Nice try Man U troll. Your picture reeks entitlement. Man U better be careful...SPURS have #1 run of form last 7 weeks, haven’t lost in CL, & have a damn good chance of knocking out an incredible Club in Juve this Wed.
If they dont manage to win any cups in the coming future and if the chairman doesn't stop pinching pennies they could lose all their top players and have to scratch all over again which will hurt becase although they're better than arsenal at the moment, overall they're not a top club and won't be able to attract top quality players
Great interview.
JJ was brutally honest here & I feel for him man!!! Anyway he was a class player & geezer!!!
I dont get it, he keeps saying "it comes down to yourself" but he talks 90% of the time about his managers, the training level at Newcastle and the midfield generation!?
No he didnt. It was mainly the questions and the two Stevies.
No regrets Jermaine just lessons learned mate . No need to talk yourself down to be humble around people like Gerrard or Macca ..
love the honesty
I can remember when he first came on the scene, thinking maybe we (United) should think about signing him.
He probably achieved as much as he was going to. He wasn't a world beater but can be proud he carved out a career for himself in football, and he played most of his games in the Premier League too. Most players can only manage lower league careers.
Always liked Jenas, not just as a player, but he seems like a really likeable guy too.
including his England caps he averaged about 27 games a season, says it all really, he's been blessed ever since though!
Stevie and Steve were supportive showing understanding of context etc.
He says exactly what I felt about him. Lots of talent but didnt do it often enough. I watched him every week at Spurs. He was in the same class level as Carrick but only played to his full potential 1 in 5 games. When he did, he was superb. Just look at his goals. Amazing technique, just not often enough.
Also Newcastle were in or challenging to be in the champions league at the time.
Very honest JJ, felt at spurs he had all the attributes to become a real big player, just never really happened.
I'll always remember him as a decent CM
Erm, werent Newcastle in the Champions League at this point in his career? Didnt Newcastle finish above Liverpool and Chelsea 2 or 3 seasons in a row at this point in his career? What his excuse for his spell at Tottenham?
He must be talking about 2004-05 when they finished 14th
Tottenham isnt a big club
@@scousebiff CL final mate
Hear hear mate! 👍👍 .....Hes a knob I cant stand him!
Newcastle were never in the ucl while he was there, highest finish was 9th
Very eloquent & honest chap
End of the day, jenas made enough money to set himself and his family up probably for life. He played in the premier league which makes him a top football player. His current pundit role pays a huge salary. He’s won at life.
Honesty is the best policy. Big thing to say. Respect ✊.
The great British press played a big part, not just with jenas but a few others and they're still at it to this day. Players have 2 or 3 good games then suddenly in the papers their world class and set to dominate football for years no come. Not saying the players themselves didn't play a part in it but we build them up at such a young age then take pleasure when they fail. Too much pressure and way, way too much money.
By reading comments alone as all proof we seen him in the champions league and in a Newcastle side seeing better times under sir bobby . All he had to say is i was not at the level of stevie g and lampard amoung others but says he was levels above Newcastle players. But then left Newcastle because of the goldfish bowl. All this shows is lack of mental strength , and there is nothing wrong with that. Just no need to bash Newcastle for your own frailties.
Speed, Solano and Dyer were all better than him.
Solid premier league player for many years I always liked Jenas as a villa fan
Refreshing too see an honest PLAYER .
I seem to remember him leaving Newcastle to 'get out of the goldfish bowl', so not sure what he's talking about really. They were a Champions League club and he got the fame and limelight from that, then he starts using that as an excuse for his below par career.
Newcastle are not a “champions league club “
They’ve been in the champions league 3 times… 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Newcastle played in the champions league for 2 of Jenas’ 4 and a half seasons at the club. Newcastle played the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan in the CL during this time. Jenas had the platform, he just wasn’t as good as other England players in his position. That’s on him, not Newcastle. Jenas played in the CL more at Newcastle than he did at Spurs. He simply wasn’t as good as he thinks he was.
and yet he's the best the BBC and BT can find for their punditry teams
Tottenham no.8 , always loved watching him play...
I like him. Interesting, intelligent man.
respect jermaine for his honesty there
What an honest fella 👏
He can’t really say it’s because he was at Newcastle because if he was “that guy” a top team would have come from him
Jermaine Jenas.....35 going on 17......
0:50 it’s a moving bush in the background!
What is he talking about? He left Newcastle when they were competing in the Champions League quite regularly.
At the end of the day he simply wasn't good enough, it didn't matter what club he was at.
There's nothing more to it really.
Exactly!!!
