- Long before today's football champions there were trailblazers who beat a path for them. In 1971 the unofficial England World Cup squad went to Mexico to play in front of 95,000 fans.
But, on their return, the England Football Association banned the women from playing and daring to represent their country. Their coach went on to create a women's national team.

Some of the comments on here are so disappointing. I played football & also rugby in my teens in the late 90's and enjoyed every second of it! I think it's marvellous that girls nowadays can aspire to greater heights & opportunities in the game that weren't there before. Nothing to do with feminism but a lot to do with keeping fit and having fun!
BTW, my husband and I and our two daughters (12 & 10) are all watching and following the women's world cup (just like we do when it's the men's) at the moment but if you personally don't like it.......you're not forced to watch and be offended are you? ;)

I think its great tbh. Not all of them are going to pay and the gov won't subside it so thats less money for the BBC over all

In 1969 (in England) the Women's Football Association was formed, at that time they officiated Girls and Women's Football in England (The Male English Football Association took over in 1993 >>>) At that time you would have thought The Women's Football Association would have Jumped At The Chance to Highlight Female Football in an international Context ... They Did Not
The banning of Harry Bat and the girls was Disgraceful, just like The Male F.A. Ban on Women and girls Football from 1921 to 1971 ... how ironic, The Women's Football Association Banning Woman/Girls from playing Football and representing England!!!
In the context of making The U.K./G.B. aware of The Girls and The Tournament at the time, we need to recognize two issues; 1, we lived in a Very Sexist society then hence the lack of interest. 2, As they did not Officially represent England, the Women's Football Association did not tell the T.V. Radio or paper press about it!.
Those Women should have been recognized for what they did then and now as they pioneered International Women's Football !
A footnote ... I was 6 in 1971, so I had no knowledge of them then, I was very fortunate to find out about them in my individual research and its Great that mainstream football people know of the Now!
Just to be clear at that time the 'Women's Football Association' at that time was controlled by men backed by the FA.
We must not forget Preston's Dick Kerr Ladies who represented England Unofficially and Manchester Corinthians who did that same before these girls took up the banner!.

I think men fail to recognise that women are generally better at playing foorball than their male counterparts or that history shows that if it were not for WWI women's football would be held in a different place in peoples hearts and minds.

You can say a lot... but in the end men dont really care about female football teams, because male teams play a "stronger" version on it. We want to see man fight other man to see what the best can do compared to us and no... we just dont compare ourself to females here. Most women dont understand/like football... so it will never become a big thing. I mean there are so many sports and it is ALL about how many people watch it. Female football just isnt a thing for the mainstream.... this has nothing to do with hate is's just true like the fact that most people dont want golf or chess. People watch female beach volleyball... but that's a different story.

Men are willing to die in wars to protect the lives of others, that is a greater level of empathy than I have ever seen from a woman. Men liberated the slaves in America, through war in which men died so that others can live free lives. My wife loves men's tennis and is always complaining when the tv shows women's games.
She says the women are crap compared to the men, which is true, yet they want the same money and don't even play five sets in grand Slam events as the men do.

Two whole bloody - the different sets rule in women's and men's tennis is absolutely absurd. Women paid for playing fewer sets is a genuine case of unequal pay, yet the feminists are silent because the victims are men.
