Some explanation about the stage setting of this production: In a theatrical programme about money, power and pleasure, the Netherlands Bach Society brings to life the fashionable Leipzig of the early 18th century. The performance begins with Bach's ‘Erwählte Pleißen-Stadt’; we extend this song of praise to the city of Leipzig to our present time. Imagine a company, CEOs talking about the success of their companies, standing behind their lecterns like you have at a press conference. But then, in Bach's expressive cantata ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ BWV 19, whistleblowers wonder: what about that success? What goes on behind the scenes cannot pass muster. Power, money, sex, the same old story.
In the complex story of Telemann's opera ‘Der neumodische Liebhaber Damon, oder die Satyrn in Arcadien’, the satyr Damon tries to conquer a kingdom from which he has been exiled. Like a true contemporary seducer, he explores the boundaries of sexuality and bourgeois decency. The characters from Telemann's opera already enter the stage during BWV 19, the first complete Bach piece in the program. With some artifice here and there, a storyline emerges as if it had been conceived together by the two Baroque composers at the time.
Director Caecilia Thunnissen: "In the end, this production is all about the longing for love. Some try to obtain love with wealth, others with macho behaviour. In the costuming, designed by Mahshad Safaei, we play with gender fluidity, the new sexual revolution is happening now, the discussion is hot. We give the contemporary seducer a stage, what does it look like? Someone who plays with decorating, sexuality and eroticism, and who feels free in it."

New Stile? Was soll das?
Eine Nachbildung der undisziplinierten Orchester mit denen Bach damals seine Probleme hatte?
Bitte gebt Bach wieder seine Würde mit einer seriösen Aufführung zurück.

This was perfect in the context of the programmatic concert about the relations between money, power and pleasure.. but if taken alone, this production can be problematic because it's very strange, maybe too much. Always grateful nonetheless, the singing and instrumental finesse in the rendition of this cantata for the church couldn't be bettered, even if this time i forced myself to close my eyes

“Out of place” vis-a-vis the original liturgical purpose is a non-starter argument, unless you want to banish the women from the stage. This is performance in the 21st century. That said, I also do not favor whatever this semi-staging was; it made no sense to me, and it added nothing to the glorious music. So I looked away from time to time, which must have been when anything sexy happened, for I saw nothing of the sort. ?

I'm not "offended" by the staging of this cantata, nor do I find it to be sacrilegious or blasphemy or woke or whatever.
The simple fact for me is that the words and music of this cantata tell a story. And Bach was an absolute master at using his music to infuse the words with even more profound meaning, in order to the tell the story in an even more captivating manner (the astonishing, multilayered tenor aria "Bleibt Ihr Engel" being a perfect example of this).
But here, his work is utilized to tell an entirely different story, which means the interpretation is unfortunately no longer in service of the work being performed, but in service of some type of "concept" some theatre director has concocted. Such concepts *can* work, and maybe this one works for the Telemann opera...but with respect to this Bach cantata, IMHO it falls completely flat. And in the context of "All Of Bach", a seminal project dedicated to this truly remarkable composer and his groundbreaking music, I find this...quite unfortunate.

It's probably some sort of heresy to say this but I've never understood the need for Opera, and Bach certainly didn't need it. His Cantatas and Passions are much better art for not attempting any sort of dramatic staging. The combination of a play with a dramatic plot in which the characters burst into song at intervals is something I've always found a huge turn-off (the same applies to film musicals!). Whereas the discipline of the Cantata form makes no attemt at realism and relies on the inherent drama of the words as sung, and in Bach's case his quite amazing ability to give musical expression to the whole range of human emotions. In this respect the Cantata form is similar to poetry which is read from the page (not performance poetry which is different), and still more to modern songs as exemplified by Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, in which the reader/listener can give their undivided attention to the words and music without distraction.

Donald Trump brought me here. He posted a Saint Michael prayer on X(twitter)
But I strongly doubt that he even knows this cantata or JSB`music in general

The buffoonery is a distraction from the beautiful musicianship and at odds with Bach's lyrics.

@@bachThe fact that this was part of a wider production means that the costumes probably weren't Sato's idea. Please bear in mind that Bach never trained as an opera composer like so many of his contemporaries (inc Telemann). He came up through the church tradition, even returning to the strictures of the church authorities at Leipzig after his luxury years at Cothen. The skits NBS did for Coffee Cantata, Quodlibet etc worked because those were secular, less formal works, unlike BWV 19, which is part of his sacred canon. Call me an old fuddyduddy but seeing an esteemed artist like Sato wearing a woman's ball gown and the other singers done up like wedding cakes whilst performing such serious music rather jars against nature's chime. Just saying.

No wonder they dumped Sato. How embarrassing. For a stunt like that the Leipzig city council would have thrown Bach in jail, even on Michaelis.

People are unsubscribing for this? I can guarantee everyone in the comment section has gone out in clothes that would have scandalized every last person in an actual 17th century church! I thought the costumes and the movement around the stage were a little unusual watching this - but i struggle to imagine the hypersensitive mindset necessary for a modern person to take offense to music so faithfully performed, the way it seems half the commenters did.

We should just enjoy the music and not watch. The outfits look like an explosion in a paint factory for the most part. A pointless silly attempt to modernise bach and telemann and which does nothing to add to the music. Easy money for the director and designer whose explanation is an excellent example of the emperor's new clothes, if you needed one.
