Most states offer a variety of maps for free at welcome stations if you are near a botder. Drove an hour and a half but now have maps in all 3 backpacks at my house. It also helps to play out scenarios with your family and supportive friends. Lots of if then planning. Write it out and put it in with the maps. Mine are in gallon zip bags 😊
If you own any of the new Vero two way radios, The VR-N76, VN-7500 or the BTech GMRS Pro, or BTech UV Pro, Radioddity GA-5WB, you may load Google Topo, road, or satellite maps onto your phone or tablet computer. These maps can be used to interface with your radio even offline, and off grid. The phone does not have to have an active SIM card. You may use an old outdated phone for map display only.
I still think that a simple Garmin GPS for automobiles is a great option. The one I have is old but has unlimited map updates. It's normal mode is off the grid. It has FM traffic updates. If FM traffic is unavailable navigation continues to work. All I need is the lighter adapter and I am good to go. If the internet is down I can't update my maps but I have the last maps I downloaded.
I have a gps device in my car. I also have paper maps and a big book like you showed for my home state. If I travel interstate I always stop at a state border and get another state map. If I go through 5 states, I get 5 new maps.
Yep. Advantage: not electronics dependent. No worries about power charge. The phone and computer devices are just my 'backup' to the paper, or if there is a level of detail not available. Also, from a 'prepper' point pf view, no worries of GPS sats failure, EMP, etc...
You can find websites where you can print off good topo maps with your choice of grid reference. Then you go buy a laminator and learn how to use the map and a compass. No batteries required.
For us Android users, Google maps has most if not all the functionality as the other phone apps mentioned. Not sure if Google maps does that on Apple devices though.
Google maps will automatically delete stored maps after a year unless you keep them updated. If you have a device that doesn't get used for long periods or doesn't connect to the Internet very often then that may be a deal breaker. Works just fine for trips with spotty cell coverage though.
You need to do a video on how to get offline maps on aprsdroid, i've been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. Without offline mapping, aprsdroid just doesn't have a lot of appeal to me

Good to know. Thanks

Certainly not a bad solution.
I have an old Nuvi and do the same. Biggest downside to me is battery life isn't very long, so I have to keep it plugged in most of the time.
At 12:15 in the video you say Orgnic Maps and should have said OsmAnd Maps. Thanks for your videos. Good Suggestions for offline maps.
I did. I overlaid OsmAnd Maps text right there to try and avoid confusion.
Great video! Great information!! So much to share. Thanks!
I downloaded a bunch of county maps years ago and keep those on my phone, but these apps look like the way to go. I will be trying these! Great video!
I have been pleasantly surprised at how well they work.

I like OsmAnd for Android. It has offline maps and turn by turn navigation

Me too. And let's not forget a compass, and something to let you know the magnetic declination and a way to adjust the compass accordingly.

I still stop at state welcome centers going in to get a new state map
😊15 Kilometers, another great video

Downloaded "offline" google maps for my trip to Canada where I had no cell service. The maps were useless.
🎃👋
what do you need a map for doesn't your gps tell you where to go>? LOL :) j/k
The GPS system can be easily jammed or destroyed. After the grid goes down, you will only have paper maps.
