Professor Haduck, I always find your mix of common sense construction commentary and hard learned life skills invaluable to assist upcoming generations.
This video restates two lessons:
1. "It ain't that hard....Don't make a big deal out of it"
2. "If it's a call from an old girlfriend, it's gonna cost you time or money "
Keep us laughing!
Thanks pls, lol, Mike
Mike - this video is very helpful and answered many of my questions. I appreciate that you share your knowledge with the world.
Thanks Marco, Mike
Watching this video inspired me to repoint my porch stairs. $24 worth of mortar, if I have to redo it every 5 years just to fill in the holes that’s fine with me
Thanks reaper,
Great video. I tell you we're in bad shape here in Alabama in regards to professional trades. Had some storm damage and it took me two weeks to find a professional electrician to install a new weather head and he had to drive 90 miles one way. This house is a 1920 victorian style with a mixture of block and brick foundation. I guess I'll not even worry about trying to find a mason to make my stone nice again. I'll do it myself as best as I can. So thanks for what you do and at least kicking me towards the right way.
Ppl are coming through using subpar materials. Just stealing money
Hey JS, sorry to hear about the storm damage. Whatever stonework you need to do on your home I guarantee you will find a vid on Mikes channel that will give you some really good tips/advice. He has been on YT for 10 years or so. Good luck to ya.
Thanks JS, I am sure you will do fine, Mike

Mike, thanks for the videos. I've watched a lot of them to understand the when and why's but still not sure about what to do with a large brick wall built around 1900. The mortar is soft but not powdery so I think lime was used. Do I just wire wheel to clean and take out some and then repoint with the harder cement?
Hi user, watch the video " lime, mortar or portland" what should I use? That will explain it best to my knowledge, every mason, especially depending on their climate will tell you something diffrent, I would do some samples wait three days and make sure it's softer than the brick, my opinion, and see what others say, thanks Mike
I think I lost my reply so I'll try again. I greatly appreciate your recommendation to make test samples. It forces me to use my brain and learn. I like that. Again, your videos and your help are greatly appreciated. Best regards and respect, Joe Luntz@@MikeHaduck
Those old girlfriends will get you every time. Lol
Thanks Richard, very true, Mike
You can use lime mortar in many locations. It's all over NYC for hundreds of years. Pointing a wall you need to cut the joints back to solid joint material. Usually minimum specified 3/4".
Thanks, Mike
Lime mortar is used a lot in the UK. Softer stone. Not like Pa. field stone.
You videos are excellent I watch all I can. Say you start with N mortar how do you make it softer? Do you add more sand and or hydrated lime? I got old yellow brick home in Canada I need to repoint.
Hi Brad, that's a issue that goes on and on, everyone has a different opinion, I will usually add a little more sand to make it weaker ond lime like but that's me, Mike
I have old books that said to use tree bark to clean brick.
Hi, I never heard anything like that, thanks Mike
Now you have
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I love watching and learning. One thing I cannot find, if I may ask, is how to remove paint from brick. I have a 1957 home where they have painted the fireplace hearth and surround. :( The paint is chipping off the hearth. How do I remove this paint and get it back close to original? Thank you for your time.
Hi Crystal, they probably painted it because of smoke damage, so even if you could get the paint off you would have that to contend with, maybe re face it, they make brick that is only 1/4 inch thick or the fake stone, I got a video comming up where I re stoned a brick fireplace, thanks Mike
Thank you
Thanks Anthony, Mike
Hi Mike! I love your videos and I am very grateful as I've learnt a tonne from you.
A question if I may... I've used N type mortar (pre mixed branded stuff) in the past. Is that ok? My brickwork looks good so far, after 1 harsh winter and this semi harsh one. Thanks.
Hi Zorica, I have used it before for brick pointing and I haven't had a problem, thanks Mike
Do you think it's possible to build a 100% brick house that is tornado/hurricane proof? What about an all brick bomb shelter? I mean no rebar or wire or anything...
HiVentura, they said the titanic couldn't sink, Like a old mason once told me, "If God didn't build it, it ain't no good, " all you can do is the best you can, thanks Mike
mike if you had a fireplace that someone threw a log in and broke out the backside of the fireplace what type brick and which mortar or cement would you use? is the really a fire brick or is this a sales gimmick
Hi, I would guess it is a firebrick, you can get them in any brickyard or take a sample to the brickyard and cement, they should be able to match it, thanks Mike
I'd love to see a compilation video highlighting all of your jokes, catchphrases and humorous words of wisdom. PS...Stay away from old girlfriends.
Thanks Brian, lol, Mike
Mike thanks again for the video. Hopefully I won’t be getting any phone calls from any old girls friends! That can be a problem! LOL!!!!
Thanks Bob, lol, Mike
Are the binders any good to add to bag mortar for the same type of job?
Hi Fringe, this type of job is just a fill it in best you can, I don't see a need for a bonder,, thanks Mike
Mike im still looking for that lonely couch cushion.
Hi Gene, keep your eyes open, lol, Mike
Good money in repointing brick.
Thanks Jamie, Mike
mike with the advise of an old timer with wemen lol thanks mike for the video

Good show.:-) :-)
Thanks al, Mike
Hi mike been mason for thirty
Years , I very much enjoy hot videos
Thanks Suzane, Mike
She just wanted to see you again 🎉
Thanks Carmen, Mike
It didn't last because there's no "drip edge" at the top to send water away from the wall.
Thanks s, I agree, anything to keep the water away, Mike
Hi Mike how can I get in contact with you? for mason work on an interior brick wall in Norristown PA
Hi Jon, I appreciate you asking but I am not taking on any more work this year, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck ok thanks, do you consulting?
yes, exterior brick wall bowing out
Don't cost me , I blocked those phone numbers. Good info Mike!
Thanks Bill, Mike
Girlfriends cost time or money or both! - Thanks for lesson!
Thanks Michael, lol, Mike
They say, "All politics is local." According to Mike, "All masonry is local." Thanks for sharing your experience! (Ever wonder who "they" are?)
Thanks Bill, Mike
Things work so different in different countries. I’m not from a America and here we use a whole different teqnique
Hi mmg, it's OK, whatever works, Mike
Why not just get a grinder with a raking disc and get all the mortar out. Mix some gobbo at 3 to 1 and use your 13 mm/ half inch pointing iron and do it properly, and it should last for years. As soon as that wall has its first frost, it will just fall off. Also, it needs wetting before you do it. That's what we would do in the UK. We would call that a "bodge job". Or just a really poor attempt.
Hi James, first I would never have done that brick job that way, I am painting over rust, no matter how much time I spend on it it's going to be just as bad in 5 years, our weather kills brickwork like that, thanks Mike
why not use N mortor?
Hi red, I could but in my opinion it would not hold up well in this situation, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck why not S mortor? doesnt that repair stuff get harder then a brick?
A man of your age needs an old girlfriend, a young one would give you a heart attack. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Paul, very true lol, Mike
Rest his soul. But I find your instruction much more Needed than Ross. He was great too, though.
Thanks cat, Mike
If you see your old girlfriend calling your phone, never pick up haha
Thanks joe,lol, Mike
The eflorecence on those brick is so bad.. but this a nice pointing job
Thanks Gabe, Mike
interesting....hmmm lol you can make some things last lol
Thanks Sue, Mike
Mike!! You didn't wet the brick first!!
Hi jh, it depends what you are doing, rMike, with brickwork, here it would have made a mess, thanks mike,
Honest Mike Haduck is like Bob Ross. I think that Mike would look good in an afro. Do you agree?
Thanks Frank, I will give it a try, lol, Mike

Thanks Barry, lol, Mike
I thought your lesson was going to be change your phone number with every girl friend......unless maybe she has a nice sailboat.
Thanks old man, very true, Mike
Old girlfriends still want into your wallet nice job
Thanks Paul, Mike
You need to grind out the mortar joints before you point it! Hotrod!
Hi Cadey, I been doing it 50 years and haven't had a callback, and saved people a ton of money by telling them the truth, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck tell them the truth? Your not even doing it right! 23 years tuckpointers union. I'm waaaay better than you and your a liar that pointing you did will not last 10 years cause you are lazy and didn't grind it out or damping the wall before pointing you be tuckpointers a bad reputation
I worked union back in the 80s, nothing to brag about there, but if you think your right , God bless you, go for it, Mike
Thanks for the truth Mike. Saved me a lot of money.
@@MikeHaduck why did you get out of the union if I may ask?
*You, like MANY, should look into LIME Mortar.*
*Anything with portland cement in it (as the main ingredient) on clay bricks is a big no-no.*
*Lime mortar. ZERO CEMENT.*
Of you watch Mike’s videos his weather where he lives is very similar to myself and I can tell you lime wouldn’t last 5 years , local guy = local knowledge on what does and does not work
@@joshbrennan8774
So, you actually don't know that about lime mortar, huh?
Hi Santrece, I did a video called "mortar lime or Portland, what should I use? Mike haduck, lime don't hold up here, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck
Have you ever tried hydraulic lime?
You can't even buy it here, and when I did use it in jersey they added Portland, nobody uses it here in our weather, watch the video, thanks mike
You spent a Long time justifying why you did such a poor job.
Hi mp, the directions on the bag are clear, add water and mix "thoroughly " any other was is substandard and unprofessional, thanks mike
Good job
Thanks Juan, Mike
