Nice one very informative. When we upgraded our 15ft van to a 20ft van we also had to upgrade or towing vehicle too. We love our 20ft ‘semi offroad’ van, queen bed, shower, washing machine, grill & oven.....etc. 👍

I have the same tyres on my Navara and towed a 2 1/2 tom van to darwin 2 years ago and they are still going real well. I will also get these tyres again.

Doesn't seem to. Had a wireless modem in the same spot before the Cel-Fi and that didnt have any issues. The canopy doors always open when I'm using it.

Here’s a couple of questions for another time, perhaps: What’s the maximum length hybrid you would be happy to take if it afforded an extra bunk, internal kitchen, and a seperate toilet/shower? What’s the heaviest you would consider for a van (ATM) going where you have gone and plan to go? Hypothetically say, is something I don’t know, say overall length 7150mm, body length 4850mm, width 2200mm, ATM 2800kg, Tare 2400kg Ball 250kg (theoretical) too long/wide/heavy for your personal liking? (We think the layout would be good for us - would work neatly regulation-wise with a 6000kg GCM and 3200kg GVM Ranger - with good suspension of course) Thoughts?
Those dimensions/weights wouldn't concern me at all. What are you looking at? I hope to find an off-road van in our budget that's 16-18ft, probably single axle, under 3t ATM with a generous payload, seperate toilet /shower, double bunk opposite end from our bed with internal kitchen and external BBQ.

Looks like a good unit! Not something that would suit us though for layout purposes. Has less internal space than our 13ft (when our back section extends, it's a foot longer than the 15ft). Also not to keen on bunks above dinnetes, or beds that have to be made from the dinettes. Not an issue on the odd weekender or the annual trip etc.. But when we're living in it on a longer trip, we need some space to sit and chill inside, do editing etc..

The WA border closure was a bit of a downer, but as you have said you now have 6 months of exploring your WA backyard...and its a big one! Hi Guys. Thanks for the excellent Q&A video. We have had a Tvan since 2012 and have found it excellent. However, we are now in the process of upgrading to a Bushtracker. I noted you mentioned the alignment issue with the caravan. Take care with this as we had a similar problem which became very noticeable on the black top. The result was that a bearing failed at Python Pool and then again just outside Norseman. Definitely worth keeping a close eye on the situation. As you mentioned everything is a compromise and it is something you have to accept. We really appreciate your wonderful parenting of Chloe. She is a real star! Cam’s cooking is also quite an event. Great video guys, I’m looking at a similar set up with a 2021 D-Max. You said you wanted to bring a rooftop tinny, how much weight would you have to cut to stay legal? With carrying a motor as well.
As it is now, around 150kgs. But if we end up towing a bigger van I'll have to cull even more than that.. I reckon we will end up with a van that has a ATM around 3t. Which means my car would have to be under 3t. Which means cutting around 600kgs to be able to tow the van and take a tinnie/motor.... We'll see how we go 😂
That was a good vid enjoyed that. cam you can get some stuff called cold weld were you mix two tubes together mix and put on your cracks on the car box were it has cracked it hardens like a weld might stop it from getting worse

Yes adds up very quickly! In the first month alone we spent $1400 on fuel, $1000 on accomodation, $700 food and alcohol, and then the rest on dining out, tourism attractions, random shopping and maintenance .

My neck muscles contorted, my eyes rolled into the back of my head and my fingers and toes began twitching uncontrollably. The thought of needing IKEA-like instructions just to provide myself with half-day sustenance overworked my underpowered grey matter beyond human endurance. Worst 1.5 seconds of my entire existence right up until you corrected yourself that wraps pack flat. Not gonna lie it was touch and go there. Great video guys.. Hey Cam, that split in the canopy, quick fix that will keep it together, next time you're near an autoshop, grab a couple of body washer / mudguard washer, whatever they are called.. I'd recommend 8mm. grab a short bolt and a locknut, (go a grade 8, one of those black ones) drill through the middle of the split and clamp it with the bolt and washers. It'll hold it together a bit longer.
Is there a lot of places for a tinny? We're in the final stages before leaving and are absolutely TORN about the boat. It's too long for the car, so we'll need to get a rack fabricated .
Definitely! It's one of my biggest regrets not taking one. I understand your hesitation though - I didn't have the payload and would also need to build a rack, it was just too much work this time.

Great video... Good to know you're happy with the Falken Tyres as that's the brand I'm looking at. The Goodride Tyres I have on 3 of my 4WD's (2sets of A/T's and 1 set of M/T's) and to be honest - I think they are a brilliant tyre for what u pay - good bang for buck and to date have not had any issues with them...
Ideally we'd love to have both internal and external. We would still use external most of the time, but like you said - when the flies are crawling under you eyelids OR the weather is poor it would be great to have an internal kitchen.

We are in the process of acquiring a Ford Ranger with a Trayon slide-on camper, which we think will fit our requirements for short trips and next year a longer across-Australia trip. Just interested in your comments about upgrades to the vehicle. What are your thoughts on underbody protection and diff breathers? Do you have these on your DMax? Keep up the great work, cheers!
We have underbody protection (from radiator all the way past the transmission) and extended breathers (diffs, trans and tcase) . Recommend both if you're doing some rock climbing and water crossings. I'm sure you're already all over it, but good tyres, suspension, frontal protection, snorkel, LR tank, UHF, secondary fuel filter with water trap, oil catch can, EGR block (if possible on your motor), lockers and a winch are all good to have for a capable tourer. But seriously consider the weight vs the value for every accessory!
That $1200 per week on the road - not including mortgage. Is that ONLY the expense of the trip? Fuel, food, accom, etc? Or are you factoring in like cost of the campervan over the length of the trip?

The Track Star Omaroo Forward Fold that we had previously? It was a brilliant trailer! Had a good payload, was built tough, set up easily and quickly. Bed was huge but mattress is not the most comfortable (needed a topper), and awning was a pain in the bum like most camper trailers. I'd give it a solid 80/100!

HF radio, Sat Phone, Cel-Fi Go, PLB and EPIRB are different things. They have different uses and different outcomes. HF radio doesn't bring immediate assistance - it's good for coordinating a recovery. Buying HF spectrum is prohibitive and renting is similarly expensive. A Sat Phone is good for phoning home or for ongoing recovery or mechanical assistance; the unit also has an "I'm OK" button. A Cel-Fi Go will get you one bar, on up to 35 connected devices, when it wouldn't otherwise exist - it is not analogue, so it's either working or not. Telstra does NOT sell this device. A registered PLB would save someone in an emergency - it will recover the registered owner or a nominated person, your vehicle will be left behind An EPIRB is a, similarly, a PLB for watercraft Just sayin'
The Cel-Fi Go does not 'get you one bar when it wouldn't otherwise exist'. It's a booster. It boosts existing cell signal. If there's no signal - there's nothing to boost and it doesn't work.

Here's the test: be remote, with two Telstra phones - walk one away and if the signal is lost, then the the Cell-Fi GO works. (it can connect up to 35 devices.) The added problems are 'small 4G networks' - you'll be notified by SMS if you fall into one. Currently, 4G is data and 3G is voice. 5G will become data and voice will be 4G - hence VoLTE - Voice over Long Term Evolution. Another problem is that remote, regional areas provide only 3G for data and HPSA (High Speed Packet Access) for voice and data, as a fallback, depending on the signal received. Since Dec 2016, I've roamed 79,000 Km over Australia. My UHF, VHF and Cell-Fi Go antennas are on my Rhino Platform. My HF is mounted at the rear bumper, because it's large unit with a long whip, depending on the spectrum available, and used, at a point in time. The Dmax has 3 anchor points, using the seatbelt to secure as well as no isofix.

Great video... Good to know you're happy with the Falken Tyres as that's the brand I'm looking at. The Goodride Tyres I have on 3 of my 4WD's (2sets of A/T's and 1 set of M/T's) and to be honest - I think they are a brilliant tyre for what u pay - good bang for buck and to date have not had any issues with them...
How do you find having just the external kitchen in areas with fly plagues or bad weather?
Ideally we'd love to have both internal and external. We would still use external most of the time, but like you said - when the flies are crawling under you eyelids OR the weather is poor it would be great to have an internal kitchen.

We are in the process of acquiring a Ford Ranger with a Trayon slide-on camper, which we think will fit our requirements for short trips and next year a longer across-Australia trip. Just interested in your comments about upgrades to the vehicle. What are your thoughts on underbody protection and diff breathers? Do you have these on your DMax? Keep up the great work, cheers!
We have underbody protection (from radiator all the way past the transmission) and extended breathers (diffs, trans and tcase) . Recommend both if you're doing some rock climbing and water crossings.
I'm sure you're already all over it, but good tyres, suspension, frontal protection, snorkel, LR tank, UHF, secondary fuel filter with water trap, oil catch can, EGR block (if possible on your motor), lockers and a winch are all good to have for a capable tourer. But seriously consider the weight vs the value for every accessory!
How did you organise your kid to be away from school for so long?
She was 3 this year, so no compulsory schooling until 2022 in WA.

Fuel, food, accom, etc? Or are you factoring in like cost of the campervan over the length of the trip?
That’s every expense on the road - fuel, accomodations, spending, food etc. doesn’t include mortgage, bills, insurance etc

The Track Star Omaroo Forward Fold that we had previously? It was a brilliant trailer! Had a good payload, was built tough, set up easily and quickly. Bed was huge but mattress is not the most comfortable (needed a topper), and awning was a pain in the bum like most camper trailers. I'd give it a solid 80/100!

HF radio, Sat Phone, Cel-Fi Go, PLB and EPIRB are different things. They have different uses and different outcomes.
HF radio doesn't bring immediate assistance - it's good for coordinating a recovery. Buying HF spectrum is prohibitive and renting is similarly expensive.
A Sat Phone is good for phoning home or for ongoing recovery or mechanical assistance; the unit also has an "I'm OK" button.
A Cel-Fi Go will get you one bar, on up to 35 connected devices, when it wouldn't otherwise exist - it is not analogue, so it's either working or not. Telstra does NOT sell this device.
A registered PLB would save someone in an emergency - it will recover the registered owner or a nominated person, your vehicle will be left behind
An EPIRB is a, similarly, a PLB for watercraft

The Cel-Fi Go does not 'get you one bar when it wouldn't otherwise exist'.
It's a booster. It boosts existing cell signal. If there's no signal - there's nothing to boost and it doesn't work.

Here's the test: be remote, with two Telstra phones - walk one away and if the signal is lost, then the the Cell-Fi GO works. (it can connect up to 35 devices.)
The added problems are 'small 4G networks' - you'll be notified by SMS if you fall into one. Currently, 4G is data and 3G is voice. 5G will become data and voice will be 4G - hence VoLTE - Voice over Long Term Evolution.
Another problem is that remote, regional areas provide only 3G for data and HPSA (High Speed Packet Access) for voice and data, as a fallback, depending on the signal received.
Since Dec 2016, I've roamed 79,000 Km over Australia. My UHF, VHF and Cell-Fi Go antennas are on my Rhino Platform. My HF is mounted at the rear bumper, because it's large unit with a long whip, depending on the spectrum available, and used, at a point in time. Don't forget a Simpson Desert-compliant sand flag, if you ever venture there.
