Limitless subjectively sounded occasionally like it was doing some stereo widening trickery at the same time.

Limitless all the way! It's a notch above everything else. I have 7 top of the line limiters (including FF Pro L2) but I find myself using the DMG Limitless most of the time , Ozone 9 Maximizer (GREAT Limiter) quite often , and Oxford Limiter V3 almost always when I want to use limiting in my Mix bus ( "pre mastering" ).

Great review i have to agree with the Rocko and others below, DMG sounds also better to me, i notice you used the "smooth" mode, that could explain the more soft caracter on the mids like you said, and its not bad. The Multiplicity MB compressor from DMG is also a great choice in mixbuss, for get mix clarity ,the "multiband glue" preset is a great starting point, subtle, but for me makes all diference to material I work, mostly acoustic and rock stuff. Thanks from Brazil!

Matty, I listened on my Sennheiser HD650 headphones. Will try monitors later, but the Fab L2 sounded a bit soft and smeary, the elevate sounded harder, and a bit less smeary. The DMG sounded the clearest as far as definition, front to back depth, and retained transients/ dynamics. Vocal and bass sounded more realistic. It gets my vote hands down, but you could probably try tweaking the settings on the others to get closer. I’m personally using Ozone Maximizer, which is also quite good but still searching for better options.

Elevate is so nice on mids.

Thank you for the video. I listened on Amphion monitors in a very treated room. Elevate is the most transparent definitely. I would not use Limitless after hearing this comparison since it has 5 bands it messes with the mid to high frequency balance too much, each time highs were pokey. if you dont have Elevate go with Fabfilter in oversampling mode (Max when rendering) Compared to Elevate Fabfilter sounded quiet timid and vibeless. Just go with Elevate all the way, its clean all over, sounds like the original material just louder. Thanks again.

Maybe use the advanced mode on Limitless next time. Did you just set the threshold only? It seems like you didn't use them to their full capability. I don't know but it seems like it. Regardless...DMG had a clearer sound, especially the mids. It almost seemed to have more imaging in the stereo field. I saw someone noticed that too. There's a reason why so many professional MEs use DMG.

I keep seeing comparisons with the DMG set to "Smooth" mode which gonna sound different from, say, "Punchy" or "Aggressive" mode. For the first demo, Limitless sounds a bit more "like a record" if that means anything to anyone anymore but I think that might be the smooth mode factor.

Thanks for the comparison! Elevate surpassed my expectations, on the contrary I expected more from Limitless.
I used L2 in the past but ditched it for Invisible Limiter years ago. Then bought the Weiss DS1 and it's my favorite of all times right now.
Would love to put it head to head with Elevate.

I didn’t like Elevate’s sound processing a bit. Fab was meh. But DMG sounded beautiful with its slightly added harmonics in the upper frequencies gives you that glossy sheen. That’s at least what I felt. This is the first time I’m hearing DMG limitless. But in real world listening, it doesn’t matter what limiter we use. Most of the limiters sound closely alike. In terms of use, I prefer the TDR limiter 6 GE. It would be my go to limiter because I mastered it first. Similarly, you may prefer a different plugin because you prefer its workflow. Client don’t usually identify the sound between the limiters to be honest.

Limitless sounded best to the extent that you could hear ringing on the vocal (more deessing?). Elevate sounds most balanced but dry at the same time. Limtless sounds lively and dynamic.

Limitless sounds the best and is the most versatile. The only downside is that it's almost too powerful and you can get lost trying to make it work for you and just make things sound worse. But when you understand how to make it work for you it becomes irreplaceable. ....All of DMG's plugins are like this.

  • @MrRaphaelRobinson

The DMG is serious gotta use that aggressive setting its comparible to the modern setting on the l2 the was used in the comparison. The smooth setting on dmg is subtle limiting. and the pre clipper can't be beat on dmg to clip a few dB before limiting begins

I am an old man and could not actually hear what you stated there. I use Hoffa IQ Limiter and I cCAN hear the difference between that and others. Hoffa litter do not punch and keep my sound very clear and loud. Due to I was forced to upgrade to Big Sur I cannot use Hoffa limiter currently since it is not supported on Big Sur, and have therefore tried a lot of others but have not found one with the same capabilities as Hoffa. limiter.

The oversampling engaged on Fabfilter helped a shit ton! But it sounded rounded off or softened, more so than the others, which on this particular track I actually preferred. The Dmg had more clarity through it, but it had this kind of saturation or something going on in the upper registers (6k and up maybe, no idea though as I'm not in the studio, just on a portable ESS Dac). The NewAudio has more clarity as well, possibly more than Dmg, but it seems that the highs were more hyped, it also had this saturation or clipping thing happening in the upper registers as well. Both the Dmg and NewAudio had more clarity to me, the NA had more so of the 3. But for this track that didn't fit IMO. Of course it could have been the settings used on these as well, as Dmg and NewAudio both have so many things to fuck with, especially the NA. Or that I'm not in the studio and this Dac, which uses the same chips as UAD and Apogee, is giving me bad results, or it's RUclipss compression algorithm, or my ears totally stuck and I'm FOS. 🍌👂🏻

@@djtuff514 What are your thoughts on the Limiters that can match the Weiss limiter, besides these 2? Maybe you've tried something I haven't. Also I do mostly acoustic instrument stuff, not much electronic stuff. Rock, Metal, Alternative, Americana, Singer Songwriter, Blues. I noticed some of these plugins work better on electronic music vs acoustical instrument recordings. Like Vevo Limiter. It's great on HipHop, Dance, EDM, and the like, but sucks on Hard Rock, Metal, etc. Hadn't tried it on singer songwriter stuff as I put it in the Electronic music plugin category. Vevo actually beat out these 3 on a HipHop track at a colleagues studio, so was eager to try it out on my stuff which turned out to be a wash. But I will say this, it still sounded better than an L2 on Metal, but anything sounds better than that! 😂 The differences from the best best and the decent plugins, nowadays, are relatively small compared to 20 years ago! Then you really had only a few go to plugins. Waves and McDsp where the go to's back then. Hardware still played a crucial role and no one mixed ITB fully!

I still mess with sonnox limiter for certain jobs, toneboosters barricade can be good if set well, and even ddmf no limit for quick jobs, it can get really loud, maybe for your music you can try signum audio bute limiter I would use it but it has issues with wavelab, I mainly do rnb, hip hop and reggae,

Now would I push the Weiss stuff hard? Usually not, but for selective band compression or De essing or very transparent gentle limiting, nothing touches the Weiss imo. DMG and the L2 and elevate I'd use for different tasks completly to the Weiss, it's like comparing a pineapple to a coconut

Having so many filters across the spectrum comes at a price. I think I'd want to see Elevate and Limitless using the same number of bands to get more of an apples to apples comparison. Also, everything set to maximum oversampling. Keep those artifacts OUT, we're not Indiana Jones.
