    Great video. I did one on DNA as well. I had my RAW data uploaded to several sites. I like the MyHeritage webpage. However, rather than use the Flag current location they should use the Nationality instead. For example, Americans living in Bahrain show up as being from there.

But problem is my great great grandmother had such a big family with 11 brothers and sisters I have many great great uncles and aunts on just that side of the family. So I have many great cousin inlaws removed etc.

    Is there something between a first and second cousin? Thomas and his only wife had 2 kids, Irene and Warren. Irene had a child, Arlene. Warren had a child, Laura. Arlene had a child Mary. Laura had a child, Chris.
    Arlene and Laura have one set of the same grandparents, so they are first cousins.
    What is the relationship between Chris and Mary? They do not share the same great grandparents, but they share one set of great grandparents. I think that means 2nd cousins.
    Then what is the relationship between Arlene and Chris? Arlene’s grandfather is Chris’s great grandfather. What is this called?

    Very informative video. I have a 2nd-3rd cousin with 222cm across 10 segments and i have entered this information on the DNA painter and have some what narrowed it down. It also stated on there to look at the 3rd-Great Grand parent level. What does that mean? Could they possibly be a 3rd cousin too? The most challenging part is ascertaining the exact dna connection. hope to hear from you!!

      DNA Painter can't give you definitive answers. It can only point you in a plausible direction. I would suggest doing DNA triangulation and genealogical record research of the DNA matches and your lines to see if they fall into the 2nd-3rd cousin category or a different location. But at least you have a general idea of where to start looking. Does that help?

    3rd - 4th cousin?
    1.0% (73.1‎ cM)
    Shared DNA
    4
    Shared segments
    32.3‎ cM
    Largest segment

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 лет назад +1

      3rd-4th Cousin: This is an estimated range of relationship based on the amount of DNA you share with this lady.
      1.0% (73.1 cM): This is the amount of DNA that you share. (ruclips.net/video/5VmgHOhG6io/видео.html for an explanation of centimorgans)
      4 Shared Segments: The DNA that you share is divided into 4 separate segments. This is in the typical range for 3rd cousins.
      32.3 cM Largest segment: This is the longest segment of the shared DNA. Having this large of a segment is a strong indicator that you are more likely to be a 3rd cousin than a 4th cousin.
      Overall, it means that you likely share a set of great great grandparents.

  • @utonmcintosh9994
    @utonmcintosh9994 3 года назад

    For 33 years, I thought I knew what cousin meant. I was 100% wrong.. Example, for everyone who's reading my comment, let's say you and I are first cousins and you had a child, I thought your child was my second cousin. If you have grandchildren, I thought they would be my third cousins. I was completely wrong. Cousins share a common ancestor. My mother's first cousin is also my first cousin. I would be 1st cousin once removed. Any children I have would still be 1st cousins to my mother's 1st cousin but twice removed. But if my mother's 1st cousin has children, they would be my 2nd cousins and any children my 2nd cousins have because we share a common ancestor.
    Now that I know that after 33 years, it's so much harder for me to know who my third cousins and etc are because I have to know my great grandparents or even 2nd to 10th great grandparents are..
    Does anyone have any suggestions for me on how I can know my ancestors whom I don't so I can locate my 3rd or 4th or so on cousins? I can use any suggestions at this point.

      A great-grandfather (rather than a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th) has a greater chance of being discovered if:
      1. He has multiple lines of descent.
      2. People from those multiple lines of descent have taken DNA tests and shared their results publically.
      3. Someone has done genealogical record research to link the DNA to persons from the past.
      If those criteria have been made, it's possible to discover the great-grandfather.

In order to resolve this you would need to look at a chromosome browser to see what (and how many) segments they share with each other and all together. Unfortunately Ancestry doesn't have one so all of the kits would need to be uploaded to GEDmatch in order to do this.

      Didfferent possibilities. 1) Your parents may not be full siblings. 2) You may be on the low end of overlap between 2nd cousins and 1st cousins in the amount of shared DNA.

    I LOVE the chart you pulled up at 4:14. Is that chart available anywhere online? Also I usually look at anyone who has 20 cM or more shared with me. I also need to ask about adoptions. I have one match at 100 cM labelled by the company as a 2nd to 4th cousin match, but he was adopted, and is from a closed state. He lives in the USA and I do not. He still doesnt have his original birth certificate. This is making it harder to work out how he is related to me except that I do know he is related on my mothers side, because he has several matches to other people from my mothers maternal family. Adoptions really do put a kink in these matches. Maybe you can do a video on that topic? Especially since the reason why many adoptees are doing DNA tests these days, is to find their biological families.

    I found 4th cousin on Ancestory she is half Korean (I’m full Korean) and half white, her mom is full Korean like me what relationship potentially would her mom be? 3rd or 2nd cousin? Or would a test be needed to determine the relationship?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  3 года назад

      4th cousin in Ancestry DNA terms is just a place holder showing how much DNA you share (less than 50 cM?). You would want to test her mom and any other family members (hers and yours) to help narrow down the exact relationship.

    • @eunheekim02

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics

      Biologically, no. DNA testing wise, yes, because you can only match with people who have also tested. If one set of your grandparents had ancestors who had few living descendants get a DNA test, then it is entirely possible to have grandparents with no matches that belong to them.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 года назад +2

      The rough category (2nd cousin) is a simple way of identifying a range of shared DNA that a match has. It will encompass 2nd cousins, but also some 3rd cousins (who share more than normal amounts of DNA) as well as some 1st cousins (who share less than normal amounts). A great aunt shares the same amount of DNA as a 1st cousin.

  • @rosealexander9007

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 года назад +1

      Half first cousins share more DNA than second cousins, so depending on where you fall on the scale it may be reported as 1st cousin (high) or 2nd cousins (low)

    2nd-4th Cousins?
    102 shared cM
    30 shared segments
    20 longest block
    x-match
    Would this be a a 2nd cousin or closer to 4th cousin? Thanks.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 лет назад +3

      Probably a 3rd cousin. The difficulty is that this is a little more than average for a 3rd cousin (55cM) and much less than average for a 2nd cousin (220 cM). Of course it is right at the average for 2nd cousin Once removed. However, because of the cM overlap it could be anything between 2nd to 4th cousins. I know that is not helpful, but sometimes DNA is not too helpful.

    several questions regarding 3rd and 4th cousin.. do all 3rd and 4th cousins share same surnames with each others or not??? do you think its strange with huge age gaps between myself and my 3rd cousin??? My 3rd cousin gentlemen is the guy that I get along well since my childhood much more than my close 1st cousins. we joked each other laughed a lot and we are like close brothers than distant cousins. At least 3rd and 4th cousins share less amount of DNA than myself with 1st and 2nd cousins at least. I just turned 34 years old first week in last month and he is 45 years old which makes it like huge age gap differences between two. does age gap between same generation cousins really matter????? My 3rd cousin Edward and his wife Jennifer have son named Liam. so Liam is my 3rd cousin once removed. right??? What about my relationship with Jennifer??? Is Jennifer My 3rd cousin in Law??? does the tem 3rd cousin in law really exist???? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 I just wanna make sure I understood how these long family tree works....

      @Family History Fanatics. you got it right. number of 3rd cousin is lot more than number of 2nd cousin that majority of people have. so many of 3rd cousins have random surnames then while some does have my surname. I think you forgot to answer these questions.. is it ok to call My 3rd cousin's wife Jennifer as 3rd cousin in Law???? I don't know how to refer to my distant cousin's spouse..... plus My 3rd cousin Edward is almost dozen years older than me... does huge age gap really matter between distant cousin and myself??? still Edward is in the same generation that I am in. right???? make sure I understand it correctly to avoid the confusion between relationship with many many cousin's and cousin's once removed....

    Be an angel pls & help me figure this out: I tested w/AncestryDNA.
    I have 6 matches on AncestryDNA; four (4-6cuz) and two (5-8cuz). All six of the matches lead me to the same fam; let's call the fam Klue. Background My PatGrandma MJ (b1892) was a mixed baby; given up by her moms' (Nel) fam; but as Nel got older; she was in touch with my MJ; even came w/Nel finacee & offered MJ an education. MJ already married w/one child; didn't want to leave her fam & pass in society.
    4th half cuz (45cM) would be 4G-Gma to me right? five of my matches match each other at the GG-Gpadres -Florida Klue; and the other two matches enter through the grandchildren of Florida; but wouldn't I also come through those people? and wouldn't one of Florida's children be my Gma???
