Thanks for the clear information. There are a few additional facts to point out: 1. Vivint is expensive! They are starting at $40 (not the lower costs advertised and can go much higher for a regular cell phone app connection; 2. the alarm companies shown that are wireless are certainly not at the same level as wired for several reasons---each device has to have the batteries changed; b. less stable than wired; 3. For those of us with pre-existing wired systems it is MUCH cheaper to pay for a quality control panel and a wired to wireless converter to allow the owner to keep all the motion and contact sensors and to allow for a wired connection. You will own the system, are not under the thumb of any one company for monitoring, no contracts, and monitoring is under $20 (no contracts). By the way, for example, a high-quality control panel (Qolsys IQ 4 allows for home automation, smoke, burglar alarm, up to 16 zones, a camera mounted in the control panel---and all of this for under $20 a month monitoring (the equipment is yours and total cost is around $900). There is a lot to alarm systems now, but please don't just go with those companies who are typically advertised: ADT, RING, VIVINT, etc. Do NOT pay multi-year contracts wherein you are charged >$40 a month. Again, just google alternatives.

One problem I have with Professional monitoring is that I do not wish to give someone access to my camera, even if they are a security company. There are too many example of hack of their system. I choose a DIY Self-Monitoring with Eufy with backup to a secondary location, this is not as good but I control 100% of the data and recording, I also had multiple friends when I am away in vacations so they can check and respond if necessary. (Also price in Switzerland for Pro Monitoring is crazy stupid between 50USD to 120USD per month for a 2 bedroom flat.)

data hacking is far more serious than camera hacking :). I use a vpn.

Maybe mention many metro police departments charge an annual fee to respond to alarm systems.

I was a Protection 1 customer until they merged with horrible ADT. I switched to COVE- A Big Mistake. They use a 3rd party call center that only calls after they wait for you to call them, so their response time is 3-7 minutes on 23 arm tests giving Home invaders a head-start. I had to send back 4 glass sensors because they do not work, they connect to the panel but do not pickup glass breakage. Do not go with Cove. When you call Cove their music they torture with is made to get you to hang up. Not once has COVE called us through the panel.

what about bring your own monitoring? some alarm systems let you choose your own monitoring so you can shop around for price and reputation of the monitoring company. DIY systems tend to tie you to one monitoring option or self monitoring. there's no contract but you can only use the one monitoring company and have to pay whatever price they charge or install a completely different alarm system and sensors.

I am looking for a monitoring system for a small apartment building. Ideally, we would install 10 cameras with 2 way talk, where a security company challenges movement in common spaces outside of set hours. Anything like that exist?

Unfortunately no. These systems are designed for personal use, not commercial.

thanks for the video. With simplisafe, do you know if we will get mobile alerts with no monitoring plan?

You need the monitoring plan to get alerts through the phone app.

Can you get real time view of home security camera while traveling?
It is most useful for any system when you are NOT at home.

Vivint shuts down all self monitoring once you cancel the monitoring contract, so be warned
