My girlfriends family all live in Queens and they are telling me how much it sucks there and that stupid mayor of yours is just trying to ride the stupid governors coat tails. There are plenty of videos showing DiBlasio telling New Yorkers NOT to be concerned about this Coronavirus when President Trump first started implementing restrictions and trying to get it under control. Lol I did see those pictures of Cuomo, lol yeah the dude certainly likes his jewelry huh? The pictures of him in that white polo where you can tell he has both nipples pierced lolol. Stay Strong!! From what i am hearing this thing is starting to wind down now with the warmer weather settling in. Nathan Boone mostly just the boomers complaining. I think once they’re gone many younger people including myself find the 70s/80s Gibsons to be quite fascinating. Sound and play better than all the crap being put out today in the production line. I’ll take that volute and single piece back over the 2-3 piece backs, Chinese cases, and bad QC of today’s modern les Paul. Especially the late 70s are some of the best LP I’ve played as a 19 year old.
I need this. The Bridge more so BUT I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE BACK OF THE HEADSTOCK. Anything to stop the infamous "oops there it goes, it snapped" meme with gibsons is a welcome addition.
Being from Chicago, all I can say is Chicago Music Exchange is amazing when it comes to Les Paul's and vintage guitars and amps since, I think, the 70's or even earlier. I can spend hours in there just taking it all in.
I love the LP Special's color scheme. This*, on a regular Les Paul, w/o a pickguard, would look pretty spectacular. *Both the top figuring, the fiery orange burst, combined with the black binding and knobs. The tailpiece coud use the black treatment as well tho.
Austin, great video as always! I just wanted to add that the "apex head carve" design has actually been in instrument design for over 150 years. I have an 1860's Martin and have seen a couple early 1900's Gibson mandolins that all have this kind of carve on the back of the peghead to add strengthening against breakage. Interesting that it fell out of fashion for so long.
@1:15 The bridge you show is not a Leo Quann Badass, it is a Schaller, and I’m pretty sure the first wraparound bridge Gibson used was the original Les Paul trapeze tailpiece on the first ES-295’s and Les Paul models followed by the stopbar bridge in 1954.
The refined "spine: version of that volute would be stronger actually for the same reason a 2×4 is stronger on end which is how houses are built. Great vids!
Hey Trogly, would you be able to review and Epiphone SG Pro 1966? I heard they’re really good this year and I want to buy one but I’d love to get your opinion since you’re one of the only trustworthy guitar info youtubers. Much Appreciated! Cheers!
The apex to the headstock prototype #1, I think its a steal, as in it makes for a investment. I see this coming in style. I perfer the spine looking one but, combine the lower section the hand touches on the red prototype. #1 or just lowering it a bit there. Sweet guitars for sure. Thx for sharing. Keep em' coming! 👍👀🎸
The “pinstriped” figure that you’re looking at is commonly known as “fiddleback curl”. Additionally, my first thought was the volute looks like a middle finger 😂 glad you think so too
I honestly miss the volute. If they brought it back for the 70’s V i would definitely buy one. That’s probably why my go to guitars are my 78 LP Custom & 79 LP Deluxe.
The idea of headstock supports and different bridges are exactly the kind of options Gibson needs to get back on top. gibson needs to understand that people will buy from them at their price point just because it's a gibson even if they can get what they want from gibson rather than a guitar of equal or greater quality another company for much less money. I'd love to see high quality extended range(7, 8 and 9 string), multiscale flying V's, Explorers, and RD's with classic and modern finishes.
Interesting proto there. Trying to remedy the headstock snap is comendible by Gibson, and actually (from an engineering standpoint) the apex design may be a bit stronger. Thanks for the vid & info, Trog, I'd rock it after giving the fall down test to the thing ;-P
That Les Paul Special looks awesome with the exception of Black binding. Black binding just gives me a cheap look feeeling, unless the Guitar was a white finish.
I like the way the headstock rib(?) thickens the volume but I like the way it makes a nest for the tuners. I guess the type of tuners would make a big difference in looks. Stronger is better?
I agree with you on that headstock. It does look like a stronger headstock. I think it should've had a combination of the rhino and the part of the valute that is wider and flatter.
I love the bridge on the Modern prototype and I think they should have kept that version of the head carve. I don't think it looks especially explicit and, as you pointed out, it's probably a lot stronger than the spike.
i saw something like that bridge not long ago and it was on a knife edge mounting and you could push down with your PALM and get a vibrato effect...seems like it was a Fender product.
ROCKABLE!! That the most non-symmetrical flame top I've ever seen...or noticed. Quite nice. Does the Nashville Special seem like a glossy "Studio" type body?
the bc Rich wrap around bridges, tonepros and a few other companies make them (including dirrect fits for gibson wrap around models) and are kind of a halfway between the gibson wrap around and gibson stop tail. they are kinda cool because you could ad a tail piece and use it either way. also they are extremely flexible since they have open tops plus screws to adjust on the posts, and have adjustable saddles. just something to consider since lower end guitars could be 1000x's more playable with a mod even a beginner could do pretty easily. examples. normal: images.app.goo.gl/Xx4rGg9VKJaNuGHc9 stop tail style: images.app.goo.gl/9tNecNpyJdTEf9EMA
He is a giant - that was the inimitable Greg Koch....Amazing player and a large human being, but maybe one of the funniest guitarists out there as well. :)
Greg Koch rules! I'd rock the CME Special with tail piece. the Apex Proto looks okay, but the bridge definitely looks out of place. with that one, it's not so much rock or not, but would tip it over to see if headstock is stronger - or not. and you would think, for the price point, they could stamp the prototype with something other than a Sharpie. Ü ♫
Love the color Trogster! Have you done a presentation of the Les Paul Custom Classic guitar/s from 2010 I bought a new in the day red tiger from the series. Thank you and i love your work, Thanks Trogly!
I have a guitar with the Apex headcarve and it is killer. In no way does it hinder your ability to play and gives you an extra sense of security. I don't know what people's problem with it was?!?!
The Proto Modern? Nah. The Proto Special? Fuck yes. I have a 2010 Epi " Custom Shop " Limited Run version of that Special. Translucent TV Yellow, Dual Gibson USA P90's, Tune - o - matic / stop tail, Grover tuners, rosewood bound fretboard, set neck. It's such an awesome sounding, amazing playing guitar. I would love to have the big brother version, especially with that maple top with that finish. God, I wish I didn't get laid off recently cause of fucking Covid 😭😭😭 I'm sure that will be sold by the end of the month.
Have you noticed the difference of angles, body to neck, between the Specials and regular Les Pauls? My '74 Special is a much flatter angle, almost Fender-ish. The Les Paul case does not support the neck because of this flatter angle.
I think the headstock on the Prototype is better and they should have went up further to the very top of the head stock without rounding it off maybe forming it to the book scroll at the top of the headstock because it definitely gives more mass and in my opinion from what I have experienced more mass in the neck and headstock is really what gives you sustain
The bridge design just looks like it's made for people who like to rest their picking hand on the bridge and then palm mute. They often don't get on with wraparound bridges, so that extended shelf at the rear provides a nice flat surface for them to rest their hand on.
Hey Austin, are you going to do a review and demo of the aldo nova les paul? Really interest to find out about it, it would look great next to a bonabyrd les paul
I would, if and only if it had an access heel joint to go along with it otherwise I would just stick with my 2008 studio LP I just got for my BDay this year. also the baby grand bridge would make it like a complete custom order by me that I would never be able to afford... Beauty of a guitar though on that prototype, and after having something with a nitro cellulous finish I am thinking that a poly satin finish would be more to my liking as I may like the nitro finish as far as breathability for the wood but caring for a nitro finish guitar can be stressful as u leave it on the stand for more than a day and u wind up having to polish it to get it back to a smooth feel as I have to do with my LP studio wich has had the back of the neck sanding down to make it for od a satin finish with 12k grit sand paper as far as the seller told me when I 1st met him and told him I wanted it cause it was the right color and just about every mod he did was what I would have done any how right down to wax potting the burst bucker pickups. I just wish he left the decale on the pickups so I didnt have to worry about them being authentic.
If the end of the volute was a little more subtle, I could deal with it. The way it just looks like a door stopper glued on the back looks awful. Sand it back until the tip perfectly blends with the headstock, and I think that could have been a little more visually appealing, while still being a personal preference.
I think everyone knows a scarf joint is superior in strength because there is no grain runout like all Gibby LP designs with a one piece neck. One way to improve the Gibby LP is to break and repair the headstock. Instant sustain gain.
You think that’s explicit? I have a guitar that is the shape of a hand giving the middle finger that also has a headstock in the shape of a Benis which can excrete liquids from a syringe attached to the back.
I’m thinking someone has a bit of a dirty mind.😉 I really think the LP Special looks fantastic. Especially the top. The bridge ruins the look of the other one. That’s my story anyway.
I think this Special deserves the same finish on the back it has on the top. Anyway it's a welcome change from the TV yellow I always found ugly (mine wears a chocolate color).
It was cool to see the birth of the Apex Headcarve... I'm glad they refined it into what we know it as today though!

Hey Austin when are you going to do the review on the ormsby guitar?
Looks like a preform that was just painted unfinished. Much stronger. Though just rounded would leave more wood and still be attractive. Interesting.
That LP special... Is the pickguard supposed to be a microphone shape? Looks kinda cool.
Looks like 🗿
How does Trogly know so much about guitars 🤘ps. BIG BRAIN
If you are offended by a headstock reinforcement, you should see a psychiatrist.
Please do that 70s V soon?
Rock both❗️
I mean, Gibson have been flipping the "Bad mother finger" to other manufacturers for decades, only makes sense they start doing to their buyers too :P
You think that’s explicit? I have a guitar that is the shape of a hand giving the middle finger that also has a headstock in the shape of a Benis which can excrete liquids from a syringe attached to the back.
What are you a member of GWAR... lol 😀🤘
Wth
Thats badass
@@edrozenrozen9600 no lmao
Only Question..............Why do you have that?
LOL, I'll take your word for it, no need to post a photo.
I’m thinking someone has a bit of a dirty mind.😉
I really think the LP Special looks fantastic. Especially the top.
The bridge ruins the look of the other one. That’s my story anyway.
I think this Special deserves the same finish on the back it has on the top. Anyway it's a welcome change from the TV yellow I always found ugly (mine wears a chocolate color).
I don't mind the headstock bit, however they definitely could have blended it in better.
What song is that? I like the chord progressions. Can you tell me?
is that Gibson les paul giving me the bird lol great show
looks cool. totaly would rock the living daylight out of this guitar
