    Ok so primaris are essentially the next generation of space marines. They were developed by Belissarius Cawl under instruction from Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines, during the closing stages of the Horus Heresy and the Great Scouring that followed. Shortly after this Roboute Guilliman was wounded by a slash to the throat from a poisonous demon blade, wielded by his brother, Fulgrim Daemon Primarch of the Emperors Children. Guilliman was recovered from the battle and placed in status upon the Ultramarines home world of Macragge. Some 10,000 years later after the fall of Cadia and when it seemed that the forces of Chaos were on the verge of finally overcoming the Imperium, Cawl along with Yvraine (Eldar emissary for the god Ynnead), Saint Celestine and a few others, found a way to heal Guilliman, and just as the forces of Chaos were about to overcome the Ultramarines in Guillimans throne room, with the help of the aforementioned characters he finally reawoke and proceeded to instantly beat back Chaos. After this Guilliman instructed Cawl to start releasing the primaris marines he had been developing for 10,000 years. The primaris marines were developed using the gene seed of loyalist primarchs. Guilliman then initiated the Indomitus Crusade and as this progressed the primaris were either given to existing chapters and those that desperately needed replenishing or they formed completely new chapters solely comprised of primaris marines.
    So generally most chapters welcomed them although there were a few that regarded them as being heretical in that what the Emperor created with the gene seed was perfect and only he should be able to make any adjustments to it and that Cawl had tampered with what was considered flawless. Even traitor astartes have this view of the primaris.
    A few books I'll recommend that detail this are: The Dark Imperium novels, The Devastation of Baal and one that gives a traitors perspective of the primaris is Shroud of Night (about a band of Alpha Legion astartes which were like the covert legion of astartes).

      I believe that pure samples of pre-heresy traitor gene seed was also used in primaris development, as Guilliman believed that, while their fall and corruption was tragic, each primarch was designed by the Emperor with a role to fill, and that their original templates weren't what lead them to turning traitor.
      For example, Konrad Curze may have gone insane and homicidal, but under different circumstances the same could just as easily have happened to Sanguinius. Their genetics weren't evil, they just ended up on evil paths.

    Primaris Marines are a new addition to the lore. Essentially, in recent times, Warhammer's lore is actually beginning to progress forwards, with the in-universe date progressing to the 42nd Millenium when we were at the 41st for the majority of the time the universe has existed (since the 80's.) With this progression came one major change - the return of Roboute Guilliman, the Primarch of the Ultramarines. On his order, an archmagos (high-ranking mechanicus dude) known as Belisarius Cawl, deployed these Primaris marines. They are essentially an advancement on regular marines, with them being taller, stronger, and more durable than normal marines, with a whole new arsenal of wargear to go along with this. Primaris marines were distributed to the majority of chapters, especially to chapters that had diminished numbers due to heavy losses. Although some chapters refused primaris marines, due to one reason or another. One thing to keep in mind is that a regular marine, if he wills, can be successfully converted into a Primaris marine. This image here shows the basic visual difference between a Firstborn (normal space marine) and a Primaris marine. i.redd.it/ivfuxz27zxwz.jpg
    The standard firstborn power armor is the Mark VII Aquilla armor, while the Primaris use the Mark X Tacticus armor. Primaris also use Bolt Rifles as opposed to normal Bolters/Boltguns.

      Thing is, their addition to the lore was an adhoc reaction by GW to re-sell their entire Space Marine model range. Their lore in the setting makes absolutly no sense and clashes with many aspects previously established. They were inserted into chapters that should NEVER accept them, like the dark angels, but they do because GW needs to sell more models. Their introduction should have been a MASSIVE event on scale of the horus heresy where many chapters rise up in prostest and revolt against these new labrats that want to replace them. instead they are now suddenly here, now buy our models pls

      @hunterwaguespack3963 3 года назад +6

      Yeah there’s plenty of reasons why the various chapters would either accept them or hate them but I also don’t see a horus heresy 2 happening, imo if anyone would try to start a war over it it would be the inquisitors or echlisiarcy, galaxies constantly getting way worse with every other faction getting more advanced troops & technology all the time marines would need to do the same eventually. Cawl it’s honestly one of my favorite characters I definitely recommend his book “cawl & the great works“, it shows snippets of how he did it,(not all but) some people think he just waved his hands & poof better marines & yell heresy, but he had orders from a Primarch,all the resources,10,000 years to do it as well as the knowledge from scientists who worked on the original Astartes project, but that’s just my opinion of him

    • @SpearM3064
      @SpearM3064 3 года назад +2

      @Gage Unruh Well... it's not so much about that. It's because there's a limited supply of gene seed available each year, so they want to ensure that only the best get the gene seed. However, you're not entirely wrong; the hypnotherapy that guarantees their loyalty to the Emperor isn't done until later. Take a look at the timeline; the hypnotherapy doesn't start until the catalepsean node is implanted. The Soul Drinkers (from the novels) are an example of what can happen if you start making Space Marines without the hypnotherapy; they might put "look out for number one" ahead of their duty to the Emperor. I won't say more than that because of potential spoilers; you'll just have to read the Soul Drinkers trilogy yourself.

      @SpearM3064 3 года назад +12

      Well, being a servitor isn't exactly _dishonorable_ either, though it's most often done to criminals or tech-heretics.

    • @enderoctanus
      @enderoctanus 3 года назад +6

      @@SpearM3064 Which is why it's honorable. Being made a servitor is a PUNISHMENT. You are literally not valuable enough in your current pointless life, so you get to open doors all day or shift crates around for a couple decades instead. Servo skulls are people who have distinguished themselves to such a decree that their service is requested even after their deaths. Their life was worthwhile enough that service continues. Servitors lived lives so useless that they can't be allowed to die, they haven't given anything of value yet.

    I'm partial to the Scythes of the Emperor, apparently successors of the Ultrasmurfs these guys are basically the Marines from the Alien universe if they were Astartes, state-of-the-badass-art, sonic electronic ball-breakers and all.
    I'm not super up to date on 'current' 40k, maybe even as much as 10 or 15 years out. But they have apparently received reinforcements and a new homeworld(?) with the return of Rowbutt Girlyman. Prior to that, however, they may have been the very first Chapter to encounter the Tyranids, losing their homeworld of Sotha and most of their forces. And since then have been fighting a constant retreating battle against the hivemind. Taking what they can when they can, saving who they can when they can.
    They're the Chapter I've painted since the first time I stepped into an independent hobby store and got my first squad of tactical marines. That was roughly 16-17 years ago now.
    But the idea of a scavenging and barely surviving chapter fighting a hopeless combat retreat has always appealed to me. The last ones I painted, maybe 4 years ago now, I opted for a mixture of washes and glazes, minimal edge highlighting and heavy drybrushing to attepmt to - in my own plebeian way - create a weathered and scarred aesthetic wihtout resorting to actually modifying the models themselves.

    The problem with directly implanting the geneseed without the trials is that even if the modifications take place in you better than anyone else there's no guarantee that you are prepared to face the horrors of the 41st millenium. The trials are more oriented to mentally prepare a recruit and fortify their minds rather than prepare them physically.

    • @olivinator
      @olivinator 3 года назад +4

      also, there's a very limited supply of gene seeds and the seeds carry the genetics of all that bore it before, so if the person doesn't take to the modification better than anyone else, then they've wasted far more resources than that individual is worth and possibly tainted the seed permanently with weak genes, not to mention the fact that if the individual is weak willed then they might fall to chaos and take the priceless seed with them, corrupting it utterly.

    The point in the trials is that Geneseed is limited whilst there are many humans who "apply" to be a Space Marine. If the "applicants" don't make it, they either die anyway or they can still become a guardsman.
    Only the best is good enough for the Astartes since there is no way they'd waste precious Geneseed on someone who has proven nothing to the Legion or Chapter, be it loyalty or capability. And even the ones who make it through training are not guaranteed to survive the operations and procedures to become a Space Marine.

    The primaris marines were created by Archmagos Belasarius Cawl but they are utterly loyal to the imperium. At first they served directly under Roboute Guilliman, the primarch of the ultramarines, but have slowly been integrated into the regular chapters. Some of the previous breed of space marines have also been converted into primaris. They refer to this process as 'crossing the rubicon'.
    Edit: I also forgot to mention that Guilliman is currently acting regent of the imperium in his fathers stead.

  • @Maxmillion77

    @OriginalHuman You've probably noticed if you look at an older space marine model compared to the new ones, the newer ones are slightly bigger and better proportioned and have the new armour, the helmet being the most noticeable difference....Primaris marines are basically GW's lore explanation for this model upgrade. So primaris are just updated space marines and can be found in most loyalist chapters now.

  • @basabromander2778
    @basabromander2778 3 года назад +2

    The trials, as I understand it, account that the winners will be given a gene seed. Its why even physical tasks like the fighting of a full on marine are judged heavily on the approach one has to the challenge. A level of strength is needed, a very high one at that, but the true extremes of the requirements lie in the mental fortitude and wit an aspirant has.
    Edit: In addition to that, the space marine chapters are codex bound to hold only a limited quantity of marines, roughly 1000 (space wolves and other non codex compliant chapters are different but you’ll learn about them as you continue research). Because of this they only really end up taking a relative handful of aspirants at a time, so even if an aspirant may have been a viable candidate despite physical failings they have more than enough aspirants that are certain to possess the needed traits to fill the slots they need.
    I highly recommend Luetin09’s other video covering the history of the astartes from primarch to primaris, very informative.
    Great vid as usual, Luke!

    The Primaris Astartes were introduced after Primarch Guilliman of the Ultramarines was reincarnated from his millenia-long coma, and took up the regency of the Imperium. Together with Grand Magos Belisarius Cawl of the Mechanicum, they launched these improved Astartes to serve the Imperium in the current M41 age of crisis.
    They have been used to reinforce currently existing but depleted chapters of regular Astartes, as well as formed into new, purely Primaris chapters.
    As you can imagine, the reactions among regular Astartes vary, as to how to relate to their new brothers. That animosity might be a seed for some new W40k stories in the future. Up to civil war, even...
    Guilliman and Cawl also bickered about what to do with the Primaris originating from the seed of traitor Primarchs. For the time being, Guilliman ordered any such Primaris not to be produced, nor awakened, if any were already on the production line, so to speak.

    Regarding your question about the space marine factions. Some factions do believe they are superior to others, yes. But they are better in different ways. The imperial fist for example, are insanely good at siege warfare and attrition based warfare. The Salamanders are pyromaniacs who are also all functioning blacksmiths. The Black Templars are well, they pride themselves on their Close quarters combat, they also have a superiority complex over some space marine chapters because they don't actually follow the codex astartes.

    The Imperial Fists with their Primarch Rogal Dorn are stoic, some might say "cold" soldiers who specialize in defending, fortifying and bolstering positions.
    Because of this trait The Emperor chose Rogal Dorn as his "architect" for the Imperial Palace on Terra (Earth).
    It would make sense to me that the Imperial Fists have this rigorous training as enduring and defending, basically every soldier being as strong as their fortification, is their role and purpose.
    It's really interesting to see the specializations of each Legion and Primarch or rather their "role" in the war given to them by The Emperor.

    Glad to see you enjoyed the Loremaster's video, if you want in depth 40k lore videos, Leutin is your man, just be aware that they are very long. He also does painting updates on his Ultramarines army, and reads short stories that talk about lore. I don't know if others have already answered this, but there are many many chapters of space marines that "descend" from the original 20- 18 Inquisitor, 18 please don't hurt me- 18 Space Marine Legions, the Legiones Astartes. After the Heresy, Roboute Gulliman wrote the Codex Astartes and basically forced the rest of the Loyalist Marines to follow it and break up into chapters of Marines to decentralize the power each legion had, with a lot of push back and grumbling. Many chapters don't even fully follow the Codex out of protest, or sheer no fucks given, and the original Loyalist legions still exist but as chapters. Due to the long amount of time, differences in the geneseed, and different cultures and traditions, many chapters are very different from their parent and brother chapters, and some even hate their "family" chapters. Numbers, equipment, fighting styles, culture, etc. can be similar, nearly identical, or vastly different between chapters, which makes cooperating difficult, but they all make up the Adeptus Astartes, the best soldiers of the Imperium besides the super super soldiers.

    Little clarification since you've asked a few times. The floating skulls are servo-skulls, which are different than servitors. Servitors are usually unwilling slaves turned into mindless drones to do whatever manual labor is needed of them. Servo-skulls are instead usually loyal imperial citizens that are willingly turned into these floating skulls after their death. Say you are a really loyal scribe your entire life, it'd be considered an honor to be able to continue your work even after your death as a servo skull.

    The analogy that you used with Royal Marines and Paras is a good one, so yeah there are rivalries so to speak and a chapter may favour a specific approach to war over another for example, the Ultramarines are your jack of all trades, whereas the White Scars are all about fast hit and run attacks usually via bikes. Space Wolves are very melee focused and usually just overwhelm the foe with unrelenting savagery. I guess true to their name you could compare the way a pack of wolves hunts prey.

    @Brutalyte616 3 года назад

    The point of the trials is often not necessarily to succeed, but to show how the Neophyte approaches a given challenge. In the case of the hunting trial, a Neophyte may be judged unworthy if he turns on his fellows to claim glory or goes off on his own, while an entire group of Neophytes might fail for cooperating because the Chapter expects them to handle the challenge individually. A group may be told to bring back a creature so one of them may pass, but they may all fail for not recognizing that they could have all passed if they simply prolonged their hunt to capture a beast for each member. A variation on this would be having a group of recruits hunt together and decide which of them should be given credit, with the ones who showed selflessness in willingly offering up a chance to prove themselves being selected over their contemporaries. In other circumstances, all of the recruits may pass the trial, but their approach will shape how they are viewed by the Chapter and what role within the Chapter they are expected to take on. In many Chapters, independent loners who somehow make the cut into the generally group-oriented structure of the Chapter tend to remain in the Scout Company, usually as snipers and infiltrators, although the operating procedures of the Scout Company varies from Chapter to Chapter. As an example, the Scout Company is generally where Initiates are sent whilst still undergoing training and augmentation into full-fledged Space Marined, but in the Space Wolves the Scout Company is reserved for veterans who can handle operating alone or away from the rest of their pack, whilst in the Black Templars the Scout Company as a formal institution of the Chapter is virtually non-existent due to their preference towards one-on-one tutorship and close range confrontation.

Robute Guiliman is a Primarch which after the heresy is wounded and goes into the deep sleep for A VERY LONG time. When he is reaweakend the primaris have been completed and are the new standart for space marines. Older normal space marines have the option of becoming primaris , but most refuse due to belief of them being a heresy or the BIG chance of them dying in the process . They are the main new force of the boys in blue ( ultra marines)

    Each chapter may have their own type of gene seed flaw, some of these flaws just add to the “personality” of the chapter, some flaws might mean one of the organs doesn’t work or over works (the acid spit is a common enough flaw) or some flaws are fatal where the rejection rate of gene seed implantation is so unstable that there’s a massive mortality rate (ultramarines and dark angels have the most stable gene seed, whereas blood angels have a ridiculously high implantation mortality rate)
    To expand a point, the geneseed pulls a space marine’s personality to have traits like the primarch their geneseed is based from.
    Ultramarines - administrative / noble pragmatism
    Imperial fists - if military engineer was a personality
    Dark angels - aloof strategist
    White scars - quiet speed demons
    Space marines don’t lose their personality, it’s just that they all gain a few similar traits in addition to what they already are. It’s one of the reasons each chapter can be said to have a personality.
    It was kind of stated but when the gene seed is implanted, one location is the site of a mature gene seed and the other site is where a space marine grows the second. After a number of years the second can be harvested like donating a kidney, to be used in the next space marine recruit, or sent to satisfy the imperial gene tithe. If a space marine dies before the second geneseed maturity, then there is a real risk that that “unit” will be lost forever, in a sense it’s an irreparable loss of geneseed.
    A lot of the time, a space marine fatality can result in two new ones, if an apothecary can secure it and both organs are undamaged.
    I believe that a rejected geneseed, can just be re-harvested to be used in another.
    Primaris marines are kind of just: “I’m you but better”, every chapter now has them and there’s kind of an “old guard” “new guard” drama about them.

  • @MrDestroyerdm
    @MrDestroyerdm 3 года назад

    To answer your question, Yes space marine chapters do specialize in certain things and would be considered masters at their craft compared to their chapter brothers who would be adequate to pretty good. The raven guard and all their successor chapters (their gene seed being based on the primarch rather then emperor) are basically like the CIA, MI6, Tactical, sneaky beaky ( Funnily enough, they have alot of those beak shaped helmets compared to other chapters) etc.) tactics. Probably my favorite chapter and successors because they're more willing to have separate Tactical Marines integrated into any Allied guard regiments to act as squad leaders and coordinate for MAXIMUM tactical supremacy. Also more willing to use actual camouflage based on environment instead of being some bright yellow monolith in an arctic battlefield. *cough* get owned imperial fists *cough*
    Basically put a Raptor Reconnaissance Squad marksmen in charge of an imperial guard scout unit and you will achieve some truly amazing sabotage action compared to just having guardsmen rough it by themselves!

    Power Armor can be used by just about anybody, though you have to imagine with different levels of usefulness. An untrained person would fall over and not get up, a Headhunter using it would walk around in it more or less like you can see in todays exosceleton-testing or, with enough experience and training, use it like the Adepta Sororitas or Inquisitors with a fable for engaging into direct combat against Xenos: kinda fluid but still a tad awkward at certain types of movement.
    A Space Marine with his black carapace wears his power armor basically as if it was his skin and said skin had extra supportive muscle tissue in it. The Interface allows them to not get slowed down or just be unencumbered by the additional weight and bulk but actually get even FASTER moving in it. It also allows for their brains to interlock with the sensoric array of the armor, which includes ballistic processing and such shenanigans. While space marines are undoubtedly good marksmen on their own, with the assistance of this wholly integrated weapon system, they reach the methodical accuracy you saw in the Astartes shorts.

    Bit of back story on the Primaris;
    From 2nd to the end of 7th edition warhamer was pretty stagnant. We had some retcons and a lot of filling in of odd corners but no progression of the time line.
    "Ordinary" marines (AKA firstborn) where the only marines we knew. Chaos was centered on the eye of terror and held at bay by the fortress world of Cadia. Primarch Robutte Guiliman had been mortaly wounded in the distant past and was held in stasis on ultramar.
    Then 8th edition hapened. Things changed and the timeline was moved forward about 200 years. Cadia had fallen, half the galaxy was cut off by warpstorms. Guiliman was back and he unleashed these new primaris.
    The lore reason given was back in the day he had ordered one of his people to improve the space marine geneseed and sort out the flaws that had started to cause problems. This project was done over several thousand years and when he came back he let them off the leash.
    IRL the reason is that marine models where simply too small and did not perform as well as the lore said they should on the tabletop. This was GWs heavy handed way of reseting this as well as moving the storyline forward for the first time in about 20 years.

    The Aspirant trials are there to both physically, mentally, and spiritually prepare and educate the new recruit upon the culture of the chapter they are going into as in the cases of MOST chapters, these recruits will be entering the Scout Companies, now I cannot be sure but the physical and mental preparation may also be for readying the recruits body to receive the genetic implants to help prevent or even mitigate cases of rejection.

    Primaris Marines are the newest breed of Space Marines, having been introduced only a hundred or so years ago. They were introduced when the Primarch Robutte Guilliman was (for lack of a better term) resurrected and started reorganizing the Imperium. With that in mind, he started having these new Marines produced and integrated into the existing Chapters.
    While the Primaris Marines are indeed physically more impressive than the Firstborn Marines (as they are sometimes now referred to), many of the Firstborn have the advantage of years of experience which mean they can still outperform their younger cousins. It has also been revealed recently that the Firstborn are more in touch with their humanity than the more coldly logical Primaris.

    Recruits, as baseline humans or partially enhanced ( some mid point stage between being a "scout marine and a "space marine" ) can win some of these challenges by outsmarting their trainers. For instance a group of ultra marines, attempting to pass the last of their trials / just doing some non armored training beat their trainers. They did this by eating the objective ( a block of cheese ) and then tricking the trainers into taking them to the end of the trial, then telling them they did bring the cheese to the spot, just inside this one recruits stomach, lol. So it does happen, however winning a stand up fight with an unarmored Astartes is gonna be hella tough. You better be one of them dudes who is naturally in shape and looks like he does nothing but work out.
    Even if they gave the humans a "War Plate" suit (not space marine power armor, but still power armor ), or "Terminator armor", not modified for a space marine, it would be very hard to win. I've yet to read a book where this has happened, I suppose its out there in one of them though.

    I'll answer that for you there mate.
    I wasn't allowed my dream job in the emergency services here in the UK. Here's what happened...
    I applied for the police and worked really REALLY hard for it. I had an ex royal marine training me in the gym. Now I wasn't a athlete by any means but one day there was an "open day" at the local army base and people were given a tour around and a chat with the troops. We then had exercises with them in the yard and I was able to quite easily keep up with them.
    In my mind I was pushing myself by thinking "if I was called in to arrest one of these guys and they run, I have to at least keep up with them." It was tough and painful, but I did it, and even outpaced some of them.
    I passed all the social and psychological tests the police could throw at me. I obviously aced the fitness test. I struggled with the interview and barely made it through with the skin of my teeth.
    At the end of the selection process it had been 6 months and the final stage was the medical. They sent a document listing all the checks it involved.
    I was born with hearing loss in one ear and this document had nothing regarding hearing on it. When I emailed the recruitment team, they replied with "no we don't test that" (as they were referring to the same paper I was given). I went to the medical, checked through each test until the nurse took me to another room which had an audiology test (hearing test).
    Right then and there I knew I was going to fail it and I was simply in shock. I tried my best on it and my left ear was perfectly fine, but my right ear was completely in the red on the decibel graph. A senior nurse took me into her room to explain to me that I won't be suitable to serve because "i can't use a radio effectively" or "I may misunderstand a witness or victim and come across the wrong way to the public." or the obvious "this is for your own safety" bullshit.
    I was absolutely heartbroken. I cannot describe how I felt in that moment. Now every time I see a police car, fire engine or ambulance overtake me with the lights and sirens on their way to a call, I feel either depressed / empty, angry, or feel myself choke up with regret, envy and bitterness.
    Now I could ask you the exact same question you are asking, my friend. What if I could have been great in the services? I've never been as passionate about anything else in my life as I was for joining that role. They never gave me a fucking chance.
    What was the point in making me do dozens of tests over 6 fucking months only to tell me at the LAST HURDLE BEFORE GOING ONTO TRAINING that I'm no good to them?

    And this is why the Space Marines were both feared and the stuff of legends in the WH40k universe. To witness an Astartes in person was a very rare thing for civilians, and even for many in the high rank and file of the military divisions of the Terra. To see one in person means the situation was dire, to see a entire squad was considered miracle event from the emperor himself or hell was to about to be unleashed.

    During the selection trials they are usually given whatever is customary on their planet. So if for example it's a feudal world and only high born kids take part in those trials in the first place, then they might be fully armed. On a barren nomad planet they might literally be naked and have to make/find anything to use.
    The picture at 2:35 shows a guardsman sniper with what is usually called a "flak vest". He is not a recruit, because he's already in the guard and therefore not young enough to become a space marine. A flak vest can be compared to modern bullet proof vests. Basially in the year 40k it doesn't stop anything, unless the enemy is still using weapons with bullets like we have nowadays.
    Yes the different LEGIONS (not factions!!!) have different strengths and there is competition between them. Some feel superior to others. Like Space Wolves would be considered barbarians by Luna Wolfes (aka Sons of Horus). While Space Wolves would basically see every other legion as snobs with no connection to earth (as in: be grounded).
    The point of the trials? Think about Captain America. They train all those recruits. One of them seems weak, but ultimately he is the only one who passes the mental test of selflessness. In their thinking they had ONE shot to produce a super soldier and it would either work or not, so they wanted mental traits before everything. But for Space Marines they know that it will work in what, maybe 50% of cases and if it doesn't it's not a big deal. Also they have billions of recruits to choose from so they want the best of the best to begin with.
    A Space Marine can also eat an enemy to gain knowledge from him, not just animals.
    The endgoal of all the training and modification summed up: Know no fear.

    The Primaris marines are not a faction by themselves per se. 10k years before the current timeline Guiliman asked Cawl to design them and he spent all that time working on them. He took existing astartes and new recruits to do his work. So you have Primaris from each of the 9 loyalist chapters and during the Ultimata founding many of them rejoined their chapters and others were split off to create new successor chapters. On the tabletop they basically have 1 more wound and 1 more attack and access to different wargear, and cannot be transported in the normal vehicles that normal marines can. The book Dark Imperium is a great read and introduces them quite nicely along with the current Guiliman. I highly recommend reading it.

    You're actually right, a lot of chapters suffer from having a LOT of personal pride thinking they are better than the other, in some cases thinking they are superior to humans in general. When in reality each chapter is the best at what they do, such as the Space Wolves Great Companies for example specialize in different particular types of warfare depending on the Wolf Lord's specific command style making the chapter as a whole a very jack of all trades sort of unit. While the Raven Guard on the other hand overall specialize in different aspects of stealth warfare such as assassinations, subterfuge, hit and run assaults, etc.

    11:32 It happens from time to time (although rather rarely) when any particular Chapter, or the most recent example I can think of, the Blood Angels, is dangerously low on potential Initiates/Recruits to eventually refill their ranks -- supposing they're not under any official citation or the like (which can also happen from time to time, depending on who the Chapter in question pisses off). It's not ideal, but then neither is letting the Chapter die for sheer sake of traditionalist pride.
    On another note, some (very few) Space Marine Chapters do allow for their Initiates/Recruits to see their families after their training is all but completed. The Salamanders are the most apt example of this, because they believe that maintaining one's ties with their original human families helps to reinforce that special trait that all of Vulkan's sons are known for -- their humanity. However, it should be noted that due to a Space Marine's overall aging process, and the time it takes to complete their training, it's rather unlikely the Space Marine in question will meet their parents again before the latter dies for one reason or another.

    There have been some inquisitor covets that made private space marines squads in order to achieve a goal or to avoid space marine chapters from meddling in their affairs. I dont know how often this is done but it is possible to be a space marine without being apart of a chapter. Keep in mind that nothing is stopping chaos from doing the same thing.

  • @modtec1209
    @modtec1209 3 года назад

    Regarding the Age: Luetin meant to say millennium where he said century. The average Lifespan, ruling out dying in combat, of a Space Marine is somewhere around 5-8 centuries, with specific chapters or (lucky) individuals exceeding this by a longshot. The Blood Angels for example, if not killed, regularly live to 1000+ years, with their chapter master Dante being a good example at around 1700. The Chapter Master of the Space Wolves has occupied that position for around 7 centuries and you don't get to be "Great Wolf" as a Neophyte, so hes gotta be around 1000 too.
    Fun fact about the Adeptus Custodes: They start their conversion to Superhuman in their late infancy and are hand crafted by Gene-Engineers using secretive material which (probably) traces back to big E himself. When these guys are fully grown, they just stop aging altogether.

    Each legion was designed to theoretically compensate for the weaknesses in others. When the legions where broken down into the chapters these traits were passed down as well e.g Raven guard and there successors are unrivalled in the arts of stealth warfare

    Bear in mind, the Omophagea has an additional tactical advantage; In chapters where pragmatism is pushed and taboos are not as common, Space Marines won't hesitate to eat the brain matter of their enemies to gain intel; Orks, Eldar, Tau, even other Marines aren't off the table (especially if you're a Chaos Marine). We see it used a few times in novels, the one I remember most being _BlackLegion_ by Aaron Dempski-Bowden.

    A purpose of the trials is also to increase survivability rates during the implanting process. Parts of the transforming are painful and grueling, so you need to be a tough cooky from the start. Also the progenoid glands can only be harvested years after the procedure, so a death during the transformation is a wasted set of geneseed. There are situations, when the glands of a fallen battle brother can't be recovered, so the chapter must be mindful about conserving geneseed. It's their most precious and hardest to replace resource.

    Watch Luetin09s Primarch to Primaris video. This gives you the background information behind the thunder warriors who were the initial concept before the Astartes as well as all the journey to why and how the Primaris were created and introduced.

    There’s a really awesome part in the nightlords trilogy where the main characters mother runs up to him crying and she gets killed. It takes one of his marine brothers to remind him that that was his mother cause the process of becoming a space marine completely stripped him of his memories as a child. On the flip side Chapter Master Dante of the Blood Angels has a dream about his father when he is on the brink of death. Both really heart wrenching and well written scenes.

    Luetin has amazing lore videos on Wh40k, and I can wholeheartedly recommend the one about Titans. It's an amazing video. Followed up by "The Secrets of the Psi Titans"

    from what i understand about the primaris astartes, they seem to be a slight step up from the regular astartes. similiar to how you have the usual army and then you have the marines. < i'm not entirely sure if that's how the military works but i thought i'd try putting it in a way that made a bit of sense. and if you want to go a step further you can think of the grey knights like the SAS or something.

    The 20 legions were all made for a specific purpose so your royal marines analogy was correct. For example, space wolves were the emperors executioners, imperial fists were masters of siege warfare and fortification, night Lords specialised in terror tactics, all different but all equal.

    You should react to The Imperium's 10 Worst Jobs by Luetin. Really puts the "Grim" into "GrimDark".

    The trials are to fish out those that have a weakness open to chaos plus the physical training is to help the body handle the transformation better.
