Honestly the movie was turned out so much better if Chelsea and Ruby were friends than enemies! I mean, if you’re going to meet Chelsea A.k.a. Narissa Into a villain proper backstory and Motivations like Pitch Black,Death,Ramises, Thawn(DC),Tai lung, and Doctor Doom(Marvel)!
Ruby Gillman is a good example of the "Flip the Premise" storytelling. And if you are going to ask "What's 'Flip The Premise?'" (Let's call it FTP for short), it's a writing technique where you take an existing story and flip it by making the hero into the villain and the villain into the hero. And then, you write a synopsis for your FTP story. And then, you strip your FTP story to the bare bone but keep the story's concept and make your own story out of it. FTP is what writers use when they have writer's block. It's the best technique IMO if you have writer's block. And Ruby Gillman is an FTP story of "The Little Mermaid", obviously. Ruby is basically the good guy version of Ursula and Chelsea is the bad guy version of Arial. Other FTP stories like this includes Bright starring Will Smith, which is the FTP version of Lord of the Rings.
In the original story, Chelsea was the mermaid queen’s daughter. Her mother was killed by Ruby’s mother, and Chelsea wanted the trident for revenge. This was scrapped at the last minute by Kirk Demicco because he felt the story would be “too dark”. As if a war between sea monsters isn’t dark enough. ROFL
Bro, that actually sounds way better than what we got now. Imagine if Chelsea just got conflicted by whether or not she should use the trident as revenge or not because she's already attached to Ruby but at the same time still consumed with hatred towards the Krakens for killing her mother, the character would've been much more interesting rather than "hehehhe im evil because I'm evil and now imma betray you because I'm evil hehehe"
Fun Fact: the Twist of Chelsea actually being Nerissa was added after the fact, it wasn’t supposed to be in the Movie originally. If I understood it correctly.
Hm, i really hate wasted potential, I would like to hope that there’s still a chance for this to live up to its potential. Maybe this would’ve worked better as a Show or maybe a Sequel could fix things? What do you think? Do you think it will happen?
They should have really just gone full Beelzebub (Helluva Boss) an air headed extrovert who’s intelligent, empathic and genuine. She comes off as off putting and disingenuous from the POV of a socially awkward introvert because they (we 😅) are just waiting for the other shoe to drop. If they wanted life lessons keep mermaids the villains give it colonizer treatment with a dash of climate change commentary. Generations ago the Mermaids cames as travelers/explorers to the abundant and prosperous Kraken kingdom. Generations go by, Mermaids are treated well and cause no problems they set up trade and everything is fine until the Mermaids get greedier feeling entitled to more and more without understanding or respecting how anything works they take over cause chaos. Using the Trident a tool crafted mermaids using Kraken tech (the stuff Mermaids don’t fully understand or respect).Generations go by the Krakens rally and take over again and begin healing and balancing but lots of scars remain. The non long lived and younger members on both sides don’t have the whole story and carry a lot of generational trauma. We could have had a Kraken family who fled the ocean headed by ,former crown princess Agatha, a long live giant kraken who was born and grew when the trade relations were starting to get tense but where there were still plenty of genuine mermaids she was friends with. She was there during the decline, the war and was instrumental to the victory. Many Krakens a mix of generations, weren’t satisfied with just pushing back the Mermaids to their home land they want vengeance citing that the mermaids had no hesitations taking them out, Grandmother who who was there from the very beginning sides with the vengeance seekers, Agatha and husband not wanting that, abdicates her position and flees with the Trident, disguising herself as human. Mermaids have been doing that for centuries so their existence is vaguely known and seen as positive. Granny, Agatha, Ruby can remain the same, but have Chelsea be genuine with her parents and older community members being the villains Mermaids old enough to believe that Krakens (by fighting back) took their homeland (the Kraken homeland) and expelled them into squaller (Some mermaids wanted to maintain their lifestyle and after losing subjugated other Mermaids to achieve it). Many Mermaid families live among humans as the wealthy and elite, the older ones resenting Krakens while the younger ones (knowing they are Mermaids) integrate without issue. When the story starts most of it can play out the same. Keep the romantic plot line to a minimum. Keep Chelsea on Ruby’s side the entire time but make the audience feel she could betray her. Speed run, I didn’t plan to type is long this was an awesome brainstorm! 😃 - Ruby discovers her roots and is pissed at her mom for not telling. - Chelsea doesn’t care Ruby’s a kraken - Chelsea’s family starts plotting - Agatha doesn’t want Ruby to be friends with a mermaid won’t explain properly - Ruby gets Granny’s side and is mistrustful of Mermaids but not necessarily Chelsea - Chelsea’s family strikes stealing the Trident - Ruby feels betrayed by Chelsea - Chelsea and some younger mermaids try and fail to talk down the villains - Seeing the genuine attempt, good mermaids, granny, Agatha and Ruby team up - Big sea monster fight with lasers - Trident destroyed - Peaceful times are here with a note that healing takes time, education and effort. Hint that this isn’t the last time that a conflict like this will happen.
Chelsea might actually have the most dirtiest marketing I have ever seen for a villain. Like you have the gaul to literally show all the evil stuff she's been doing onto your trailers and ads, only to find out that she was just a twist villain named Narrissa. Its one thing marketing your twist villains, since it helps keeps the secret hidden, but this is just ...this is not ok.
5:01, what about if Chelsea actually were the Mermaid Queen’s daughter like she said but actually was trying to steal the trident for her mother because her mother cajoled her into it.
@@matityaloran9157 yhea but budget, the movie changed drastically(you can see that in the deleted/discarded scenes) main reason is that the movie changed of director. The budget was another reason why there were not many mermaids.
@@jayfilms99 hmm why would poseidons son have a trident hmmm. But yeah it’s a lightning bolt that drives the plot. Movie still sucked though, books were better.
It wasn't exactly DreamWorks fault that the movie turned out the way it did. That's Universal's fault. You made some good points, but I'd have given Chelsea credit for being smart by rescuing Ruby from the sea captain to make her believe that she ISN'T evil even though she's a mermaid and for empowering her when her mother and grandmother weren't helping. Also I'd point out that her defeat is a best scene too because it's funny when she says she's pretty and misunderstood with puppy eyes and how she makes the best of her situation by getting likes on the livestream. 😂 I'd say 6 at worst and 7 at best.
The problem is, the fact Chelsea helped Ruby and empowered her before betraying her is never expanded on and Ruby’s family foregives each other too quickly for their “trauma” to even mean anything.
Now in a situation like this I would say first comment but I have a father and like women so uhh Ariel from the little mermaid Edit:nvm I’m not first comment my life’s ruined
This is so true but also is there any other good teenage mutant ninja turtles villain that is not the shredder or a alien i just need to know i not watched like all of the old turtles media the recent movie and also play shredder's revenge it's going to be good it's enough i don't know yet
from this writing view, chelsea is considered bad villain. but according to folklore, its quite accurate, mermaid or siren actually are deciever and manipulator, they dont care about anyone, as long as they get what they want, they'll do anything. maybe sure not all are like that but this is sure showing of how cruel someone will be to achieve their goal.
Actually in mythology, while mermaids are temptresses they aren’t always evil. Some are evil and some are just trying to live their lives. Sirens on the other hand are half birds, half maidens who lure ships to death by their song.
