Maybe he was just smiling at you in a friendly way , maybe he likes you as a person and sees you as a friend . I had a classmate who would always smile at me and i always smiled back at him from the heart because he seemed so kind and gentle but never feel attracted to him nor feel in love with him. Don't assume that a guy is in love with you just because he smiles at you , guys are more complicated than that lol
