I talked a friend into coming back the next summer with his GSX-R 750. We got to ride the newly finished Cherohala Skyway and had a blast on all of the surrounding roads. I love those mountains!
I live down in SC. I got pulled over in my '06 Cayman S on The Dragon in October of '23 by Tenn State Patrol. I went up from NC like you did from Deal's Gap, Trooper was in an SUV right around the 1-mile marker on the TN side. Got me for 50 in a 30 and was pretty grumpy about it despite me being super polite and compliant. I paid the fee (can't remember, maybe $150 or so), clerk waived everything else so I got no points on my license. I've been going up there in various cars/bikes since '07 and have only been pulled over three times, resulting in two tickets and one warning. They know what the deal is with the road, but they have to maintain some level of presence up there to keep it in check. I'm at the point now where I'll run the whole Dragon conservatively until it's clear that there's no LEO up there before driving it aggressively. I also only visit on days early in the week now, too.

I used to live in SC and had a 2018 ZL1. Went to the Dragon about a dozen times and loved every minute of it. There are some other routes around there that are exciting as well. Never got pulled over.
I was about to recommend Cherahola and Richard Russell over deals gap, but then at the end I see they are already tested and scored above the dragon. Good stuff!
I did this all the time back when I was 18 in my Chevy G20 Cargo Van! It looked like a beat up old work van but it had a late model dirt track engine with 373 gearing, and one nut lose behind the wheel! I had motorcycles try to keep up with me and couldn't! A CARGO VAN! ... But then again, it wasn't just a van, it was The VAN!
I drive Tail of the Dragon several times a year (I live close) There are way too many other great roads in the area to speed on this one. Always, always, always cops on TOTD. It’s a fun road to drive at reasonable speeds plus you always have to watch out for center line crossers and stopped (crashed) vehicles. Keep up the great videos 👍
Going to need to get out of the east for the best. Did 190,000 miles over two years in a MK7 GTI just to chase apexes around the country and all the best stuff is out west. East is excellent as well and 129 is a blast, basically a big autocross, but get out to NM, CO, CA, OR, WA, even Texas has some surprises (Three Twisted Sisters are incredible). If you aren't yet, use Calimoto. Choose a cool spot a few days away to go to, some way points and you'll be in heaven. Time won't exist.
Thanks for the comment! I had a Mk6 - super fun! We have plans to get west and can’t wait to make it happen. I guess we will see where the roads out there stack up - but for now - we enjoy these mountains! Cheers.
@@trueview3127 A couple of suggestions, CO-12 in southern Colorado, CO-67 through Deckers, CO. Just avoid I-25. It's boring. Stay west of it. Skaggs Springs Road, heading east from the California coastline out of Stewart's Point. Might get lucky and get to pick a grape off a roadside vineyard. Beautiful road, no people. Heaven. Texas Twisted Sisters, 200 miles of hill country madness. You can lift the front wheels in a Miata over the rollercoaster section at 80mph+ if you feel dumb enough to add instead of subtract throttle at the peaks lol
Bad luck but good job getting a warning. Been up there several times and have never seen law enforcement. Mostly during the week or early morning hours when traffic is light. Honestly it’s my least favorite road given that someone seems to cross into my lane every time and usually a massive truck. Stay safe and thanks for the great content.
It was good to get that warning off to the trailing cars for sure! Cool that you get the chance to run it without traffic, but I have to admit that I'm always a bit apprehensive about the oncoming traffic straying from their lanes. You can see a couple of corners where the Cruiser Bikes are actually leaning over the center line . . . Fortunately, I haven't run into a truck blocking the way before . . . must be scary when that happens!
Driven the dragon many times since 2008. I always make one run at a conservative pace before making a return run back towards deals gap. I have almost come to the conclusion I can stay within 15 over on straights and hammer the turns and have a blast. But to each their own. I have noticed local law enforcement has established preferred spots for traffic enforcement. I have been on weekdays and never saw an officer. Also I’ve had V twin cruisers cross center line on multiple times in the tight decreasing radius turns. Beware of them. Beware of all bikes really. I Enjoyed the ride along.
We see patterns for where and when the road is patrolled. I like your advice about pace. That makes a lot of sense - and agree about the bikes. You can notice a very tight right hander in the video where a bike is leaning across the center line. Yikes!
A couple of visits to 3rd - in the middle of it - you just don’t realize or care that most of the road is second because you have to slow down and deal with the next corner before you have a chance to think too much.
I live in Oconee County and the road to Highlands (28) is lightly traveled in the early morning and I very rarely see the popo. The NC stretch from the border to Highlands is brand new pavement and like glass. It’s only a 30 minute ride from Mountain Rest SC to Highlands NC but worth it. I drive it regularly in my 981 Boxster S. There’s a great breakfast cafe in Highlands called the Blue Bike Cafe. You’re welcome.
There are a lot of excellent double yellow twisty mountain backroads up here in NorCal. However state troopers are abundant and do not give breaks. Many drivers see their cars impounded if going double the speed limit, which is too enticing to not do for most.

I appreciate the videos and all the data you provide for us. I have some questions I am hoping to get answers for: 1. How do you have a spirited driving when the speed limit (like in this video) is 30mph? I am not thinking about crazy fast speed but to stay under the speed limit, everyone would have to crawl down the road. Do people just driving over the speed limit and risk getting pulled over? 2. Are there lot of cops on these backroads? 3. Are the cops very strict/lenient on the speed? 4. Do you think radar detectors are effective for avoiding the cops? 5. Do you have any tips on enjoying these roads? (safety, avoiding cops etc)
@@slowcookedbolognese appreciate the comment. The best roads for the drives we enjoy are remote, no traffic, no drives or cross streets, and should be driven well within one’s limits.
