- The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in Dartford, Kent in 1962. The first settled line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums). Jones left the band less than a month prior to his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who left in 1975. Since then Ronnie Wood has been on guitar in tandem with Richards. Following Wyman's departure in 1993, Darryl Jones has been the main bassist. Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as occasional pianist until his death in 1985. Other notable keyboardists for the band have included Nicky Hopkins, active from 1967 to 1982; Billy Preston through the mid 1970s (most prominent on Black and Blue); and Chuck Leavell, active since 1982. The band was first led by Jones, but after teaming as the band's songwriters, Jagger and Richards assumed de facto leadership.
The Rolling Stones were in the vanguard of the British Invasion of bands that became popular in the US in 1964-65. At first noted for their longish hair as much as their music, the band are identified with the youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s. They were instrumental in making blues a major part of rock and roll, and of changing the international focus of blues culture to the less sophisticated blues typified by Chess Records artists such as Muddy Waters, writer of "Rollin' Stone", the song after which the band is named. After a short period of musical experimentation that culminated with the poorly received and largely psychedelic album Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967), the group returned to their bluesy roots with Beggars' Banquet (1968) which - along with its follow-ups, Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972) - is generally considered to be the band's best work, and are considered the Rolling Stones' "Golden Age". Musicologist Robert Palmer attributed the "remarkable endurance" of the Rolling Stones to being "rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music" while "more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone".
The band continued to release commercially successful records through the 1970s and selling many albums with Some Girls (1978) and Tattoo You (1981) being their two most sold albums worldwide. In the 1980s, a feud between Jagger and Richards about band's musical direction almost caused the band to split but they managed to patch their relationship and had a big comeback with Steel Wheels (1989) which was followed by a big stadium and arena tour. The band's tradition of supporting albums with big stadium tours continued through the 1990s and 2000s. The band made what were then the four highest-grossing concert tours of all time (Voodoo Lounge Tour (1994-95), Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997-99), Licks Tour (2002-03) and A Bigger Bang Tour (2005-07))
The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them fourth on the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list, and their estimated album sales are above 250 million. They have released twenty-nine studio albums, eighteen live albums and numerous compilations. Let It Bleed (1969) was their first of five consecutive number one studio and Live albums in the UK. Sticky Fingers (1971) was the first of eight consecutive number one studio albums in the US. In 2008 the band ranked 10th on the "Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists" chart. In 2012, the band celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Probably my favorite Stones’ song. Very underrated.
Simplicity perfected. I love this song. First heard it aged 9 from a folk band in Scotland who covered it, and even as a kid I fell in love with the dark brooding character of this piece of music. Just to credit the band they were called Spear Thistle and they were not famous but they made a massive impact on my life and introduced me to the Stones. Thanks guys if any of you ever read this.
One of my favorite Stones songs. Top 5 I'd say
What are your other favorites?
Mine too❤️👍
I agree. Superb chorus
check out a version by Ruth Copeland. Quite a killer.
So glad I’m from this era. We had some great music. It lives on!
It's almost like he wrote this song for a specific person...
Great song!
It kinda of was written for one person. Mick Jagger said it was written in response to a rich girl talking about how much money she had at her disposal. It's a great song, one of my favorite rolling Stones songs.
When someone looks right through you in a calm and relaxed manner and says you shouldn't play with him, you better make yourself scarse.
One of the Stones' darkest tracks. You certainly wouldn't want to mess with Mick Jagger after listening to this!
This, believe it or not, was the song that sold me on the Stones. There's a dark menace just underneath the veneer of calm and respectability that the melody and the arrangement project.
Mick jagger would get dropped like a sack of shit by most 😅 but yes this song is very menacing
@@Adam-ro8vj yeah toothpicks with big mouths dont usually end up well in fights lol
Absolutely... the guy's sitting on his Bentley singing veiled threats to his girlfriend whilst surrounded by his mates. At one point he even threatens to send her back to her mother. Very scary. This may have something to do with the fact that Marianne swallowed his mars bar!
@@KebabMusicLtd I legit laughed at this comment. ole Mick and the boys going to get rowdy on some rich girl.
my favorite rolling stones song ever
Great song. 60s 70s was the best for music. Born in 81 but love the classics.
This was the real Stones. RIP, Brian.
REST.IN.PEACE. Brian
@@michaelbutler2583 Brian does not appear on this recording.
@@williardbillmore5713 Hes obviously talking about the members shown in the video champ.
@@williardbillmore5713
You can clearly see Brian in this video. Open your eyes, look around, see the truth.
@@Proud_Texan
The truth is that Brian did on the record exactly what he is doing in this TV video. Absolutely nothing. The only Rolling Stones who contributed to this record were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
*The Rolling Stones' 1965 song "Play with Fire" features Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, with Phil Spector and Jack Nitzsche also playing on the track:*
*Mick Jagger: Vocals and tambourine with echo chamber*
*Keith Richards: Acoustic guitar opening*
*Phil Spector: Bass*
*Jack Nitzsche: Harpsichord and tamtam*
What you see in this video is Mick Jagger lip syncing to the hit record with the Rolling Stones sitting around a Rolls Royce.
What you hear is the recording made without Jones, Wyman or Watts.
As I said; Brian does not appear on this recording.
Well, you've got your diamonds and you've got your pretty clothes
And the chauffeur drives your car
You let everybody know
But don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire
Your mother she's an heiress, owns a block in Saint John's Wood
And your father'd be there with her
If he only could
But don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire
Your old man took her diamonds and tiaras by the score
Now she gets her kicks in Stepney
Not in Knightsbridge anymore
So don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire
Now you've got some diamonds and you will have some others
But you'd better watch your step, girl
Or start living with your mother
So don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire
So don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire
That's the lyrics all right
Thank you!! 😁😀😊
It makes sense if you're familiar with London.
Wild ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Stones have a great catalog of songs, that are really great.
Brilliantly 👏 performance by our beloved London boys! Wish I owned a block in St John's Wood NW8
Very ominous, very beautiful. Phil Spector on bass.
That's also his Rolls!
Don't try to fool me. I watched the video, and nobody was playing a bass!
So totally haunting, just like their Lady Jane song also is.
Absolutely!
Love this tune!!! Saw the stones back in 1989/steel wheels tour. Cheers from BC Canada ❤❤❤
My favorite aswell! This came out when I was 1,..... 56 yrs old now,.....😂😃😊😎
This came out the year I was born
Been following me ever since
Jack Nitsche on harpsichord with Phil Spector on bass guitar, with only Mick and Keith present when recorded in a Los Angeles studio while
I like when bands slow it down so we can see what is in their hearts
beautiful poetic words of yours; original too, a rare treat in the web of mediocrity.
I heard about this song from a Wes Anderso movie, I can't stop listening to it
Early Stones. Hautingly beautiful.
Rest In Peace Charlie ❤️ thank you
I love this song. Magnetic performance
One of my favorite early Stones songs. Still listen to this track often during my Stones mix!!
Old but gold
Great song, and so very true.
Stepney , Knightsbridge .... only the Stones so succinctly put the motheaten English class system into pop..... "Factory Girl' , "Backstreet Girl", "Lady Jane" even "Who's Been Sleeping here" ..... Brilliant Lads
Perfectly said. I love the early 70s stones, but these Jones stones years were magical
young nick jagger...what a handsome man... magnetic

It s Rolling Stones , the best of Band of rock and roll
It always amazes me that such a wonderful world existed before I was in it. This one was five years old when I was born
Total 60s rebellious and so introspective song, underrated from a recognized band, what a dilemma, but fuckin great, Brian Jones was the spirit in this era.
Brian does not appear on this recording at all.
There is an underlying sense of rage and contemptiblity to the rolling stones music 🔥
RIP CHARLIE
My favourite stones era with Brian Jones
Brian does not appear on this recording at all. In fact the only Stones on the record are Mick and Keith.
¡Que joyita este video! Es la primera vez que lo busco y lo veo, siendo un fan de toda una vida.
Fantastic tune, the rolling stones, one of the best on the planet x
Those were the days... Summer '74, had some cherry and made an improv cover with my band
I'm no expert but this is one of few songs I learned how to play on guitar just by listening. I really dig it
Wonderful
R.I.P Charlie
First time I heard this song, was in a film called, Shoot the Moon starring Diane Keaton and Albert Finney. Excellent movie. Must see.
Yes. A good film. Directed by the late great Alan Parker.
I wish someone would upload it here :)
Brilliantly done. West London boys. Uk
"I told you not to play with fire!" - Terry Silver
A Masterpiece 😎
Yes, Mick and Keith hit one out of the park with this very early original piece
fave Stones track
Regal and evil-that's how I like my Stones.
Can someone explain me why 70’s and early 80’s music is the one and only music that can grab me by a hearth hardly with it’s thoughful lyrics and great melodies?
And no, Iam not from 60’s so I dont feel sentimental about it. Iam from late 90’s and I like lot of music styles, modern too, but nothing hit me personally like this.
This song was recorded in 1965.
Wunderbar...
Love this song
I love the dark side of the Stones. „Paint it black“ is another example. ❤️
The Stones truly are the best.
Love this brilliant song! UK 🇬🇧
Simply the best.
sick rolls Royce bro 👍
Thats why its purple
Wow ! Recently this was suggested as a listen to, by someone on social media around time of Mick Jagger's birthday.
Love this song!
See on Supernatural s12e12, ending song.
Awesome track.
One of my favorites
Brilliant 👏
The inspiration behind Robby Krieger writing “Light My Fire”
I find this song to be great. I have always liked it, since I first heard it many years ago..... "It speaks volumes", so to speak. 😎
Long life Mick Jagger!
William, my boy!
Con Rolling Stones me empezó a gustar el rock n roll ♥️ play whit fire the best from london
Een van de best songs van de stones
This is still the epitome of cool in 2023
Great song! They are sitting in front of that car in the band shoot and that is supposed to be fancy to them now? Time is an interesting thing.
Brilliant song. Camden Town and Holloway N7 by old Manors. Genius. Uk 🇬🇧 💷 🇬🇧
Real talent
Have 2 on my burning list
Love this and I know to whom this relates... 🤫
the rolling stones popularized the stoic look which make the bad look so cool
So Fn great, legit
A great track and the start of the phase from late 65 to early 67 where the Stones challenged the Beatles. Maybe the albums weren’t as deep but their songs (album tracks and singles) brought the Stones very close. The equalizer? Brian Jones and his musicianship. While he doesn’t play on this track, the countless others are amazing
Godfather of Harlem season Three episode 3 got me here
I love this song!
Stara sem bila 12 let, ko sem slišala to pesem, sem se zaljubila v Rolling Stones-e in to še kar traja, že 58 let.
This is insaneo style
Huh? This is a real song? Guess there's song 🎵 for every old thing...ADX8💔 BIG D
A great B side, if I recall correctly? Love the blend of Harpsichord & Guitar. Fantastic lyrics. Probably touches on the class divide and those whom the Rolling Stones met on their ascent.
Love this!
🔥
❤
Regal and evil. That's how I like my Stones
My role model. Love ya.
Algum brasileiro ouvindo em outubro de 2020?
The anthem
Its Never 56 years old ! Makes music in 2021 look 70 years old
♥️♥️♥️♥️💯💥🔥👑loveeeee
Always felt like this song was somehow related to Mick's relationships with his then-girfriend Chrissy, a model and sister of a fashion icon Jean Shrimpton.
Who cares?
@@PhilBig68 obviously you if bothered to comment.
Hahahaha
I'm obsessed with old pictures of Jean Shrimpton, she's like the most beautiful woman who ever walked the earth!!
@@dyangordon6151 I would give that honor to Grace Kelly. Prince Albert was a lucky man.

The art or science to deal with FIRE is best taught in a specific sort of YOGA : A G N I Y O G A....
The DOORS even came up with a music video with the title DANCE OF FIRE.
In the DOORS song WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER ( I had no access to any CDs audiocassettes and CD player since 2015..with a short interruption of one month in 2019 in the 650.000 E condo,I inherited outside Munich and that was l o o t e d and then auctioned off in jan 2020 due to a judge corrupted by both DEEP STATE a n d local MAFIA) Jim sings "MUSIC IS YOUR ONLY FRIEND UNTIL T H E E N D ....,DANCE ON F I R E ,AS IT INTENDS"
So ,there you have it....FIRE needs to be danced on and controlled...how to do that is another matter.
Anyone here from Westworld ?
Me too, but I knew it before as well, and I saw the Stones in concerts four times as well. :)
@@norberttoth8738 well done then 👍
But it's true, I heard this number in 2003 for the first time. And even then I got the feeling, it should be soundtrack in some movie or tv-series. :O :)
@@norberttoth8738 yeah it did sound like that..
@@norberttoth8738 lucky man!!
I cover this one for sure!
I like this song because its Jagger keeping those spoiled rich girls in check! I’ve had some experiences with those girls and they always infuriated me. They didn’t care about anyone or anything and they wasted my time and money! I steer clear of them now. The minute I see spoiled behavior I leave. I can’t stand spoiled children throwing tantrums or screaming either. I just stare at them!
Brian is mock singing trying to make Mick lose it, you can see Mick looking down towards brian trying not to crack up.
It’s great how science fiction films set in the future pay homage to The Rolling Stones. This song is on the futuristic West World in season 2. The first season had a piano cover of Paint it Black. The film Red Planet set in 2056 had a scene when an engineer on a flight to Mars referred to his grandfather’s cover of 19th Nervous Breakdown.
