It's a shame he passed away. He had all the attributes of a star: he was handsome, charming and articulate. A real tragedy and one can only wonder what could have been.
@@helloskinny510 Yes, MLB were a unique band, definitely - they captured the sense of musical dynamics that's eluded so many hard rock bands wanting to emulate Zeppelin. Two very good guitar players who were both able to play lead and duel, an awesome, tight rhythm section - and a charismatic, funny frontman with a xoulful voice - they made great use of all of this, and it shows on the album. At that point they were a better hard rock/glam rock act than both INXS and G'n'R. They were not a grunge band, so it's hard to say how they would have adapted if they'd survived and had to make their follow-up album at a time when grunge was exploding all around them in their hometown.
Layne as well. From what Chris said, Layne broke down in front of the other guys after Wood past away. I believe Chris would be giving him that hug he said he wished they would have then.
I could listen to him talk and sing forever. Andy’s been gone so long but his story is still a tragedy of Seattle . Miss you Andy!!!! RIP Andy, Layne and Chris. May you 3 be rocking together in heaven
I feel just exactly the same way. I still break down into tears every so often. And I never knew him or ever saw them live. I feel like I am connected to him and knew him very close for some reason I cannot explain.
Had a friend take me and another friend to a MLB show back in 1990 when we visited in Seattle. They were unbelievable. I don't remember the other guys (who I only later found out were Stone and Jeff from Pearl Jam) but I definitely remember Andy as front man and he was star all the way. You couldn't help but just stand in awe of him. And funniest guy I ever saw lead a band.... And when my friend called me a year later and told me 'remember that guy? He's dead" I wept. This reopened all that.
I was curious how charismatic Andrew Wood was, considering that the record company signed Mother Love Bone and had high expectations in the band just because of him, to the point that they dropped the band immediately after his death without giving them any chance. I thought, wow, how can a single person create that kind of impact on people? Well, all I can say after 5 and a half minutes of interview, is that he was a powerful and very creative soul. I imagine him gathering so many people around him. He had very good vibes. Without a doubt, a great loss for all the people who knew him and for the alternative rock scene.
sam Jackowski there wasn't one distinctive "seattle sound". Grunge was really just some label that the industry liked to bunch bands from there. MLB was glam-ish rock, Alice in Chains were bluesy inspired metal that evolved to alternative metal, Soundgarden at the start had influences of punk and metal, the Melvins and Mudhoney blended the punk rock sensibilities that influenced Nirvana. There wasn't one distinctive sound.
Saw them with the Dogs D'Amour at this tiny club on the northside of Chicago in 88....virtually no one was there....40 people tops. Had no clue who they were at all.....but I remember Andy just owning the crowd....He truly acted like he was playing in front of thousands at the Garden. The band were good....they didn't blow me away...I think they probably became much tighter as a result of this tour and they were still fleshing out their sound to some degree but I am so happy I got to see them. Was a totally random thing....a friend asked me to go just to get out and see some music and BOOM.....I got to see MLB. Chatted with everyone in the band for a few minutes. We talked about the rigor of touring in a van (which SUCKS for any of you who haven't done it) and wished them well. They weren't really used to the cold midwest winters and I remember talking to them about that stuff. Jeff, Andy and Greg were the ones I spoke to the most. Really solid down to earth guys. Great memories. Man....What could have been if things just didn't play out the way they did.
Andy was in my dream on 1/10/23. He was so beautiful and I recognized him right a way. Still has that personality. We went to a cafe. He was so chill and we just talked life. He was so happy and doing well. 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
Grew up, play music and still live in Seattle. Andrew was 8 months older than me. Grunge still hadn't been given a "label" then. We all just thought of it as hard rock, we were sick of the L.A. pop music that grew out of the early 80's. To this day Andrew's death deeply affects a lot of people. There were a lot of bands but lots of moving band to band. It felt like a pretty small family. It was fun, there was no feeling of competition just that we wanted to play loud and hard. I talked to an ex local DJ recently from a local famous station KISW and she was finally hanging a picture of Mother Love Bone after all of these years and she's still not sure if she can leave it up. Had they stayed together MLB would have been really big and Pearl Jam wouldn't have existed and that would have been fine with me.
Although Andy did do heroin, its unfair to remark that "Andrew died of an overdose of heroin". Boom end of story. Kurt Louder of MTV did say "complications of a heroin overdose" which wasn't entirely true either. I've seen everything that can be viewed on this and I'm sure alto of people think this is merely "splitting hairs", but the fact of the matter is, Andy got a "bad dose" that over a dozen users had taken & were all in the ER because of this. My information is that the majority of these others survived, in spite of it and Andy didn't pass away for several days even becoming conscious at one point, briefly, then slipping into a coma before being declared brain dead & life support stopped. Maybe its not important to some, but to me, a talented, loving person, who loved life, music, his mates & his fiance, the circumstances should be accurate. He was far from perfect, did heroin, rehab, twice, but he was a perfection in music. My .02 cents to a man who inspired so many.
robin mcrae "splitting hairs", but the fact of the matter is, Andy got a "bad dose" That just about sums up a skag overdose. Not so much a 'bad' dose, ironically more like a 'good' dose; much purer than you're used to.... game over. It's a sad shame.
Maybe. I've only done it twice & dry. But, the fact that a lot of others were treated in the ER that night, for the same reason, apparently under the same circumstances as Andy, his consciousness and that he survived for 2-3 days, well u know, ur right. It's sad and such a waste of a talented young almost national star, the end just doesn't justify the means. My only point was that it didn't appear to be just 'another OD by a f'ing junkie'. +robin mcrae You are absolutely correct, Andy was said to die of a brain aneurysm several days after having "overdosed." Don't ever stay in the hospital alone. It is absolutely terrifying to an extremely sick awake person, let alone a sleeping loner. A comatose loner. A dead loner, with missing nurses notes from the last ten hours of his life. Apparently, he had pupil response upon testing yet not upon the time of the missing medical info. Don't think that just what you heard in this interview didn't or couldn't have hit a nerve somewhere. Perhaps the competing bands, record companies, friends who really were not friends, god knows who felt threatened by what would happen when Mother Love Bone hit the charts. It was a long time coming. They could and should have been signed earlier. In my personal opinion, as a singer, Andy had an extremely unique voice, great range, ability to sing different notes than were playing in the background, an ability to reach into your heart and touch your soul, and more CHARISMA than just about any band front man ever! He loved his audiences. He loved the people, and they loved him. In my opinion, Geffen, who approached them first and strung them along, made a mistake by not signing them sooner, probably unsure of how much money they could shave off the top of the contract for their Big Name and association with bigger bands. Mother Love Bone had a sound that was so unique, everyone at Geffen must have seen them in a very interesting light when compared to G'N'R and their other bands. Andy talks about being strung along, and about waiting to sign with Geffen so long that they were approached by several other labels, signed, and finally were ready to unleash "Love Rock" on the world. I have no idea what happened, but think the circumstances of his death are weird. The band was supposed to release "Apple" right after he passed away- how odd he should die just as the LONG awaited album was due to be released. Could be a coincidence, could be more nefarious. Seems so strange. Why at that very time? It was before the world at large met Andrew and MLB. The records would have sold like hotcakes. MLB would have been a main player in the bridge from hair bands to Grunge/alternative. It was too perfect. Something had to go wrong. Maybe it was not a coincidence, as they say, money talks, bullshit walks. . Never stay alone in the hospital. Make your wishes known. You know this band made me feel like I was a superwoman, it made me feel so much emotion and love. If only I had the chance to have seen them... My older sister Andrea (Andy) Gonzales was a photographer for so many big names in the industry...and I was her shadow... Now Im 37 and still remember the days of love and rock and ministry...Days to remember and days I wont get back or forget but the fact that I was a part of the late 80's and partying through the 90's makes it all worth wile. They cannot be recreated....
So I read he was sober for 160 days, relapsed on a small amount, but a bad batch was going around as others OD'd that same evening. He had a brain aneurysm and that would have caused a stroke and the drugs made happen while he was out..and possibly later he had a bad reaction to the drugs at the hospital but he was brain dead for so long that once they got his heart going it was too late. Anyway, he seemed like a hell of a character. Props to him for accomplishing so much in just 24 years and helping create such an amazing genre
'Well i've been around the world, wrote a million songs, its all a bore to me, well ive slept in the gutter, lied with the dogs, it never bothered me...'
This is one of the best videos on the internets period. Andrew Wood was destined for stardom but burned out long before his time. RIP. Seattle will never be the same.
✨️👑✨️ My God what did we miss out on. Love Rock is so needed right now. I hope the new generation listens to Andrew... What a gift. My God. Just straight from a higher source. ..I hope there is hope, Andrew ✨️👑✨️🎶🙏🏻✨️
Glen Campbell was an exceptional guitarist and had amazing range as a vocalist. He was a session musician for many huge acts like the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Elvis and many more. I can understand why he was a huge early influence on Andrew.
Brett OBerry saw a clip of Buffalo Springfield playing (a TV appearance, Ed Sullivan maybe?) with a guy on guitar sitting in, back to the audience, off to the right. It was GC).
Andrew Wood seems like such a nice guy who really needed to get all his music to the people. he just seemed like the kinda guy who doesnt have an ego but really needs to be famous. :) i wish he wasn't taken away so soon :(
Tanks for being part of this world Andy , when a clean soul like your touch the others with a gold voice there’s only one thing left to do ..... send you a kiss and hope it will reach heaven ......LOVE
Fuck this goofy looking guy...bring Layne Staley back god...this guy was lame compared to a real rock god like Layne...I'll trade this guy, Justin Bieber and Bernie Mac for Layne, Ryan Dunn and Paul Walker...Sounds fair right?
Sean Ryan no, considering Bernie Mac and This guy are both dead. Also Paul walker is so overrated. He is known for one series of movies and they arent even that good.
All things for a reason. Apple is one of my all time favorite albums. I heard Andrew was a funny dude on stage, would have loved to seen them in concert...
fair enough..anger is a common part of death & loss. A. He WASNT a junkie...he had been clean for over 18 mo. and something caused him to relapse that night. it was a bad batch & two others were taken to the hospital that night from using it..but the difference is.. they werent alone & someone was able to get them medical attention faster. Andy didnt want to be an addict...he was an empath..ultra sensitive to emotional pain..thats the biggest reason people turn to drugs.
My dad played in a band with Kevin Wood and contrary to popular belief Andy didn't get a bad batch, he had an aneurysm that had been in the works for some time. Prior to his death he had fevers and migraines and when he shot up that night, the change in his blood pressure led to the aneurysm bursting
Bubber Ducky He survived a few days in a coma I believe from complications from the dose - and yes, in the hospital he died of an aneurism -the heroin dose caused his blood pressure to be off.
Is funny the story he tells about Geffen. It's exactly what happened to the Nirvana guys. Kurt always remembered that winter 1990-1991 after signing Geffen as the worst, so much so that after returning from the Nevermind recording sessions in LA Kurt was evicted.
I love Andy Wood - one of my inspirations to be myself more. Very charismatic and a fine wordsmith. I love MLB. He said he doesn't think this is a Seattle sound but now it totally is!
That is not the case where I am from. I knew Andy - we went to school together on Bainbridge Island across the water from Seattle. We know him well still here. Mother Love Bone wasn't actually "Grunge", not yet. And he was an addict. He'd relapsed before. But no one wants to be. I don't think the "facts" are entirely correct about that night. But anyway, I don't know about Cobain but Chris and Eddie have done justice to his memory and are passionate musicians. Andy would've loved Eddie.
The song far behind brought me here! Wanted to know the man behind that song now I got the feels! I was only 4 when he passed and I'm just discovering his music. If Andrew was alive today I can image his creation impacting 3day festivals we have today
1:27 That’s a point that doesn’t get made often enough. How insanely different are all these bands? Nirvana, Green River, Melvins, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone…precisely *none* of these groups sound anything alike aside from distorted guitars and weird chord progressions.
I didn't discover MLB until after PJ came out and I became a fan of them. I bought the CD and couldn't stop playign it for weeks. I might have to breka it out and listen again, it's been a LOOOOONG time.
My dad liked Glen Cambell so much. So weird! He liked Ricky Nelson and Willie Nelson as well. His love for those bands was displaced to me. Not even talking about the Doors and the Stones. Great to see this video.
I grew up in SoCal (North Orange County).... there were lots of hole-in-the-wall record stores that I'd visit frequently. And there was a Tower Records within "bike distance" if I was really bored and there wasn't anything new or interesting in the smaller stores. No one in the area knew who MLB was until Apple dropped. No one I knew heard about Andy's passing on the news or in the paper. I bought Apple, listened to it...and was perplexed at first but I kept playing it. A love for the album grew - I couldn't wait for more material to be released. It was just so different. It wasn't punk. And it wasn't really L.A. glam rock (L.A. was only about 25 miles away). So, I waited for another MLB LP .... that never came. Back then, there was no Internet. There was almost no way to have known that Andy was gone unless someone told you. When someone told me, I was really bummed out and it bothered me for a few months... But then, all of a sudden, the other Seattle bands started releasing albums, beginning in late 1990, in a huge wave of differing sounds and styles... quite figuratively, and somewhat literally, out of the "Wood"work. I heard snippets and pieces of Andy & MLB in all of them... he wasn't really gone. Shards of his brilliance were simply dispersed amongst his friends, other bands, and his fans. I realized this what I was 13 years old. This is also when I started playing guitar. I wanted to be a part of this. Maybe part of a second wave, since I was about 6-ish years too young to catch the first set. The only time I didn't play was when I was in the military after high school (a typical move for young men with shitty families, no real direction in life, and loser friends with no ambition). I never made it into a band, but I did keep picking around on guitars and wrote a few songs over the years.... been sitting on them for at least two decades now. Maybe one day... who knows?
@Rotties9292 No he wasn`t. He had a girlfriend. That was just him; that’s just his personality and charisma. That`s what made him huge in the grunge scene.
I used to have a copy of the Motherlovebone tribute album on tape. This was before all the deaths. I was very young, and shocked that this up and coming star died before he made it.
I found that Glen Campbell reference so endearing...my Father and Mother, who have both Died, sadly, adored Glen Campbell. Their favorite song of his was "Honey, Come Back." I've listened to it so many times. Very comforting in my pain. Andrew seemed to be an interesting character.
The final part of the liner note that reads -"Apple" is all the time we spent together- always gets me, to us this is an amazing record but to the rest of the band is a big part of their lives, so sad... RIP L'Andrew
@@ccnomad Since Jeff is known for being behind much of the art in PJ and Also he was the one who painted the famous Mother Love Bone Mural in Seattle i am 99% sure it was him

Amen to that! I know some people in their late 30's early 40's who listen to 'Grunge' and they have no clue who Mother Love Bone is. I could talk about Mother love Bone all day along with Pearl jam (Who some didn't know who they were either) and i'm 13!! Mother Love Bone album came out on 1st January 1990 .
Literally the first album of the 90s , really a late 80s album I guess but a new dawn
Andrew such a loss
What a time to be alive, and what a time to live through! Count your lucky stars you lived when you did. You truly lived in a great time!
Amazing times!!!
How's life at 46 ?
So I read he was sober for 160 days, relapsed on a small amount, but a bad batch was going around as others OD'd that same evening. He had a brain aneurysm and that would have caused a stroke and the drugs made happen while he was out..and possibly later he had a bad reaction to the drugs at the hospital but he was brain dead for so long that once they got his heart going it was too late. Anyway, he seemed like a hell of a character. Props to him for accomplishing so much in just 24 years and helping create such an amazing genre
Man, we could sure use more artists like Andy to look and listen to in these days of such societal unrest. This modern world is severely lacking soul
Damn right brother, just recorded an EP check it out!
Man I wonder if Andy knew what he was apart of and that he was the bright light of Seattle,
God! what a charismatic guy he was with a great voice 😢 so talented frontman but we lose him to drugs
This beautiful person makes me want to pick up my guitar and just play...and do kind things to make people's day! That's a great legacy!!
'Well i've been around the world, wrote a million songs, its all a bore to me, well ive slept in the gutter, lied with the dogs, it never bothered me...'
That voice ❤️❤️❤️
Still makes me sad he’s gone
people like Andrew are the reason I play music at all. eternally grateful.
The more potent and stronger the drugs the better the music, but shorter the life in most cases RIP
I loved this band, Andy WAS the band. Yet one more devoted amazing artist gone too too soon. RIP Andy
Can you imagine if Andrew sang those Pearl jam songs? It would have been magic.
Happy Birthday Dear Andrew Wood!! May you rest in peace!! xoxox
Do me.
Miss you Andy.... You've been gone 25 years today.... Sucks to lose such a wonderful soul to drugs.
Such a well spoken person. So sad. We all miss you Andy
2:01 he had such a beautiful smile. Rip Andy
This is one of the best videos on the internets period. Andrew Wood was destined for stardom but burned out long before his time. RIP. Seattle will never be the same.
✨️👑✨️
My God what did we miss out on.
Love Rock is so needed right now.
I hope the new generation listens to Andrew...
What a gift. My God.
Just straight from a higher source.
..I hope there is hope, Andrew
✨️👑✨️🎶🙏🏻✨️
:) i wish he wasn't taken away so soon :(
he seems like such a nice guy. i wish i knew him.
He was so good and so original, it's a shame he wasn't here today.
Tanks for being part of this world Andy , when a clean soul like your touch the others with a gold voice there’s only one thing left to do ..... send you a kiss and hope it will reach heaven ......LOVE
Man if I had the power to bring Andrew Wood back to us God knows I would!!!! Miss him insanely!!!!
That would be something great if we could bring him back!!!!! Ooooh he was so sweet
Man of Golden Words..... RIP Andrew.... You are dearly missed
He had done so much in his 24.
RIP Andrew Wood....such charm and talent.....we all wonder what you would have done if you hadn't left so soon.
I love you Andy you did take over the world buddy it's the mother that gave birth to music.....
All things for a reason. Apple is one of my all time favorite albums. I heard Andrew was a funny dude on stage, would have loved to seen them in concert...
He really was cherubic. What a dude
Andrew Wood was like the David Lee Roth of grunge. Smart, witty, a showman,, but a lot more down-to-earth and relatable.
What a guy ,.....even in High school everyone knew Andrew was going places,...Damm it still hurts even now
Seems like such a down to earth guy with an infectious personality. I'm sorry we never got the chance to see how he would have evolved as an artist.
fair enough..anger is a common part of death & loss.
Prior to his death he had fevers and migraines and when he shot up that night, the change in his blood pressure led to the aneurysm bursting
bentleyabc blah
Bubber Ducky He survived a few days in a coma I believe from complications from the dose - and yes, in the hospital he died of an aneurism -the heroin dose caused his blood pressure to be off.
Is funny the story he tells about Geffen. It's exactly what happened to the Nirvana guys. Kurt always remembered that winter 1990-1991 after signing Geffen as the worst, so much so that after returning from the Nevermind recording sessions in LA Kurt was evicted.
what a beautiful soul
Wow! Can't believe it's been 30 years! So sad to think rock is dead, really feel old. Live in my heart 4 ever..
I love Andy Wood - one of my inspirations to be myself more. Very charismatic and a fine wordsmith. I love MLB. He said he doesn't think this is a Seattle sound but now it totally is!
no hate in this mans mind...
I love how he cracks himself up at 5:10. He really was a treasure
I love you so much angel!
Chloe Dancer call your dad, oddball.
I would love to talk with you. Love and respect from Australia mate
Can you tell more ?
How are you doing today Andrew. ?? Bet Your Family is So Proud of you
I seriously love Andy's talking voice more than anything ever. What is his accent? The way he says "Mother Love Bone" is the best thing in the world.
RetroForMe do you think thats the reason for his accent? cuz it sounds pretty unique idk maybe its just his voice?
Born in Mississippi
Southern born and southern bred.
Born in Mississippi, lived in Texas for a few years, then moved to Washington in his early teens.
man, Andy seemed like a really cool guy. i often wonder what it would have been like to sit in a room and talk with him...
Makes my heart ache hearing his voice. ❤
The song far behind brought me here! Wanted to know the man behind that song now I got the feels! I was only 4 when he passed and I'm just discovering his music. If Andrew was alive today I can image his creation impacting 3day festivals we have today
1:27
That’s a point that doesn’t get made often enough.
What might have been? Such a talent, you will be missed Andrew……..
This guy seemed so cool. though he's dead I've been a fan for a while/
My dad liked Glen Cambell so much.
Maybe one day... who knows?
Man what a genuine down to earth guy......sucks not knowing what could have been. Thank god for PJ.
He had a lot of charm and charisma
Happy birthday, Landrew
In 'his' mind.. He was famous WAY before anyone even knew who he was...LOL he did the same amazing show for 7 people as he did for 700 people...
bentleyabc that's the spirit of all real artists ❤️
The final part of the liner note that reads -"Apple" is all the time we spent together- always gets me, to us this is an amazing record but to the rest of the band is a big part of their lives, so sad... RIP L'Andrew
Do you happen to know the author of that? The 'J' in the signature (and the artsy-ness of it) had me guessing Jeff Ament, but I just don't know.
@@ccnomad Since Jeff is known for being behind much of the art in PJ and Also he was the one who painted the famous Mother Love Bone Mural in Seattle i am 99% sure it was him
he kind of had that Shannon Hoon thing about him. Another tragic lose. Hard to compare to Vedder and Cobain cause the music was still different then. Sometimes they sound a bit like Candlebox
Not me almost crying over This.
Was in Seattle in ninety met him at a pub out with friends he was so sweet we maintained the friendship until he died
Amen to that! I know some people in their late 30's early 40's who listen to 'Grunge' and they have no clue who Mother Love Bone is. I could talk about Mother love Bone all day along with Pearl jam (Who some didn't know who they were either) and i'm 13!! I find it sad that people have lost the idea in this world of what good music is.... it's just sad.
MLB Should be more well more known. They we're a great band and always will be.
R.I.P Andy
I don’t know how anyone could not like this guy. His mom said they would throw stuff at him on stage but he would win them over anyway 😂
I remember having to give "!0" a half of dozen listens to get used to Veders voice, much respect to him. But Wood .... just dammit.... great soul to his art. Still sorely missed.
Heartbreaking.
@joshdamsma If you want to know more about Andrew... go watch Malfunkshun The Andrew Wood Story. recently released on DVD
I miss you, Andy :(
"Different high tops" Ih, now there is top shelf outlaws there! These dude did not GIVE A SHIT!!
Seem's such a lovely dude . . . RIP Andrew 💙
Sorry to be so 'blonde' here... seriously just realized I have the POWER OF VETO~! I have removed all the negativity... Loverock awaits you people~ Andrew Wood
God Bless Mother Love Bone and Allen ... That story of the band is definitely a great story. But for sure very sad...
What a loss. Still onecof mt favorite bands.
His music would’ve evolved in such cool ways.
Thanks for the video.
Good guy. Tragic what happened there.
Dude was only 5ft 5inches tall, it bugged him more then anything
That end was written by a true poet.
Who knows how bright his star would of shined.
next month is 25 yrs. since andy's passing. :( they recently did a mad season tribute concert. they need to do one for him.
I was at the ritz watching soundgarden when Andy was overdosing.
He's really likeable.
