Love this. I'm someone who despite always wishing I could read more, still enunciates each word in my head and tries to really take my time. The flow and rhythm of the words really adds to the storytelling experience for me!
love your appreciation for writing as a craft! So many people say they don't care about prose, when in reality prose is the vessel through which we experience novels in the first place!
Really love this video, and I think past Esmay could really have used this advice even more than I do now lol. Many of the books you mentioned here are ones that I did a disservice to by blasting through them at the speed that I do all other books, especially when I was still in my more fast-paced YA fantasy era. Definitely a few that I want to reread, fingers crossed they work better when giving them the time and attention they deserve.
I love this! We spend so much of our life racing through day to day and reading all these wonderful books you mention is a chance to slow down and immerse yourself in these incredible worlds. Bravo for this video 👏👏
I agree on this. I'm a relatively slow reader (I can only read so much because I have A LOT of time to read) but generally I find I enjoy books more at my pace than if I tried to read faster, so I just plod along at my own pace. Nothing against people who can read really fast, but that isn't for me.
Binge reading is what will cause burn out for me. It’s better to read at a comfortable pace. For me it depends. Sometime I will have more energy to read a lot or I’m really liking the book. Or I be playing a new video games.
The Fellowship of the Ring was very easy for me to get through, maybe because I've seen the movies so much? But it flowed so well for me. I can't wait to get to Janny in Jannyuary! I'm not sure if ASOIAF is going to make it into my TBR, at least any time soon. Janny was bumped ahead of Malazan, so I'll get to that next. I was surprised by how much Crime and Punishment pulled me into the story. You can definitely sit and ruminate throughout that book. I have issues with Hyperion. I read the first 2 stories and they were just not for me. I'm still going to read the rest of it to see if something eventually clicks. McCarthy is an author I want to get into, I just haven't gotten there in my TBR yet.
Excited that you are starting Wars of Light and Shadow. I totally understand bumping ASOIAF especially if you want a finished story. I totally understand with Hyperion. Some people love it so much and it’s just not on that level with me.
I am currently reading the stand by Stephen king. About 180 pages in and taking it so slow considering it’s a 1200 pager. It’s actually very nice to read it a little slower, sometimes booktube makes me feel like I need to panic speed read or something lol
Yaaaa Malazan is one I have such a strong desire to drive through, but I slow myself down so I give myself time to enjoy it 😂 it’s so challenging not returning to that world after delving so far into it with each book I continue to read. But reflecting has definitely increased my experience
I just found your channel, went thru several videos, and now I’m subbed lol I’m a self-published author, and my second novel is coming out next month. I would love to send you like several chapters in advance just so you can decide if this is for you, and if you like it I would love to send you a copy Thank you in advance!
I'm a natural slow reader, so i take it slow even reading an 80 page novella. 🐢 About prose, maybe it is because i'm not a native english speaker, but i have always had difficulty in identifying what people mean when talking about good prose. 😅
It will depend on the person to a certain point. I think a great video about it is an hour long video by 2toRamble and Philip chase. They really break it down well
Since you have an appreciation for great prose, have you ever read Steinbeck? His books are perfect for letting them absorb you. Also John Williams, especially his book Stoner.
@TomOrange Stoner and Butcher's Crossing are his most notable works. Also, The Count of Monte Cristo (Robin Buss penguin translation) is another perfect book that you should take your time with. The story is a huge payoff. It was the first time I read a big book and immediately after finishing it, I felt like I wanted to open it again.
I loved this video! I naturally read slowly, and some books demand a slow, reflective journey. 🐢
When I physically read a book i'm a super slow reader but that does help me really think about whats going on in the book.

When I can get into the flow of reading the prose its great!
It’s called subvocalization and it’s a bad habit
Yes! Yes!

For the longest time I didnt but now that I do its a very nice touch.
Good reminder that we can enjoy a book instead of rush through it.
Im guilty of it! Sometime we just want to read so much and need to relax
Great video Tom! You’re right about many of these. They deserve to be savored.
Thanks Chas!

I did the same thing for a while. So i know exactly what you mean!

I only read as much as I do for the most part because I read the same amount pretty much everyday

Im the same way. Sometimes I just put effort to other things

Booktube can do that. Especially when you see how much other people are able to read
Yaaaa Malazan is one I have such a strong desire to drive through, but I slow myself down so I give myself time to enjoy it 😂 it’s so challenging not returning to that world after delving so far into it with each book I continue to read. But reflecting has definitely increased my experience
I totally agree! Some times I really have to make myself slow down.

@@TomOrange I just sent it. Thanks in advance!
I’m currently reading Crime and Punishment - it’s dense!
Thats a good read!

@@TomOrange oh, had that on my 'watch later', will check it out.
LOTR is GOAT
I have been thinking of trying Dune
I really enjoyed it. I think its one of those books people should at least try.

I have read some of Steinbeck and have enjoyed it. I have not read any Williams yet

@@smrfymrfy Count of Monte Cristo has been on my tbr forever and i just keep pushing it off
@TomOrange That's fair. It's quite large, and there's so many books out there. I hope you get to read it someday!
