    Honestly Luke is probably, other then Nell, the best and most tortured of the siblings. He tries so hard to forget and beat the ghosts of his pasts only for them to come back and drag him down. And if not the past, its people in his present, his siblings or the girl he met in therapy, that let him down or betray his trust so that he is left alone and frightened. I relate so much to his struggles and weakness.

      I agree the Twins are the most traumatized and most misunderstood by their siblings because the twins are the ones who saw the most ghosts who were attacked by the ghosts they were the only ones who actually knew what happened that night besides the dad and how Luke deals with his trauma and his family lack of support is the most relatable to me I definitely can relate to his struggles and grief the fact that he lost his twin his other half I think that was the final straw for him I think Nell was the only person holding him in place

    From experience: the rehab experience Luke goes through is accurate. You leave and want to come back, they already have your bed filled within the hour.
    This show’s way of showing addiction is so well done. This is the episode that truly hooked me on the ghost and family dynamic throughout

    • @arsenelupin9697
      @arsenelupin9697 3 года назад +7

      As they should.
      There are more than enough people in this world that are plagued by some sort of addiction, so if you actively struggle against the help that's offered to you, other (potentially more willing) people should get the opportunity that you refused.

    • @Fabina4190
      @Fabina4190 3 года назад +22

      @@arsenelupin9697 I think you’re missing the point that services like rehab are so far and few between. Not only that but they are thousands of dollars, money that many people in this situation do not have. I think Steve ends up paying for the rehab or Luke’s cut of the book something that normal people don’t just have.
      As someone who lives where the show is based and has a sibling in the same situation, this is common. People leave to help their friends and find that they are now left with nowhere to go other to shelters/on the street where they are most likely to abuse.
      The point of this episode is to empathize, Luke wants to help his friend stay clean, even if it means risking losing his bed. He makes her a makeshift rehab by attempting to get a hotel. Please understand that the lack of addiction centers in United States is horrible. If they were better funded, less expensive/free, and had more locations: addicts and family would not need to wait months for a bed

    • @arsenelupin9697
      @arsenelupin9697 3 года назад +4

      @@Fabina4190 Sure, but you cannot adjust the system to fit every single individual.
      One person might leave because of reasons that aren't related to their addiction, but others might just want another hit.
      The amount of money and manpower you'd need, to deal with every single scenario individually, would require a pretty big contribution from taxpayers and I'm definitely not in favor of that.
      It's the same with healthcare in general.
      Having some sort of public healthcare isn't necessarily a bad thing - even though it's usually incredibly lackluster - but one can't be expected to pay for other people's bad choices, like morbid obesity for example.

    • @Fabina4190
      @Fabina4190 3 года назад +7

      @@arsenelupin9697 didn’t think I’d be talking about this on cinema rules channel lol. I agree but at least a public healthcare system could take in people that want to get better. Many of these people are already using some sort of public welfare to get by along with stealing/family money, at least getting more centers could give them more of a place to go.
      And yes, people do leave all the time to get high. That’s why you get kicked out of halfway houses and rehabs so quickly. It just sucks for the people who didn’t even use (like Luke in this situation) where if tested is still completely sober but now without room.

    • @amyfrench8678
      @amyfrench8678 3 года назад +13

      Including the family perspective. I'm always amazed to see people have such little compassion for family members of addicts. I guess it's hard to understand. When you've gone through decades of being lied to while trying to help get someone clean and off the streets and your heartbroken EVERY time then you tend not to believe and trust anymore. If you help and they get high then you're enabling and if you don't help and cut them off then you're considered heartless and uncaring.

    I love all the kids but Luke & Nell are my favourites. The two of them didn't really stand a chance (of not being affected strongly) after being exposed to that trauma at such a young age. The scene where Luke is walking the street obsessively counting & the bowler hat man glides right up to his back genuinely breaks my heart. The drugs helped him run from his demons for a while but now being clean, his demons are front & centre. The show is just an amazingly intelligent piece of work & has aspects that most people can relate/emotionally connect to. Really glad you guys are covering the show!

    It's rare to see so many layers to characters in Horror, but with this it's as much about the family drama as the scary stuff. Carry On!

    • @mikedimples
      @mikedimples 3 года назад +2

      Steve didn't turn his back on Luke though. Steve invited Luke back into his life and home. Programs generally train the recovering addict to not expect to be trusted for long time and that earning your family's trust back takes long term actions. Convincing the family member that you've changed with an intense conversation is a big no-no.
      After years of being burned, Steve would be silly to trust two freshly recovering addicts who just came out of rehab. Besides, Steve was being perceptive: she IS slick (like most addicts). Luke set himself up to fail by not following what the program should have taught him about this (the rejection of his claims that both of them were trustworthy was used as an excuse to relapse), which is why programs try to dissuade recovering addicts from expecting trust right away.
      "...our backs on our returning veterans."
      Also I wouldn't call an addict who competed his program a veteran. The war to stay sober isn't over by a long shot at that point. Interesting comment btw.

    What did Shawn ask Tom @ 10:55? I ran it back so many times and still don't know what he said and CC said "diabetes". The guy who played Luke is brilliant.

    For what it's worth, I think the reason Luke doesn't "just explain" his current situation and ask his siblings for help is because - and he repeatedly mentions - "they never believe me." Between his disregarded fears as a child and his repeated failures and betrayals of their trust as an adult, Luke feels like there's no point in trying to explain or ask for help, because it'll fall on deaf ears. :(

    I cannot wait for episode 5&6. This show is way more than a "scary" show. I still can't watch the 5th and the last couple of episodes and not sob. And the way the 6th episode is shot is just astounding.

    4:33 lol, you’re still looking in the background…but did you notice the ghost in the background of that very scene? (Actually, there might have been two.)
    But one is the long blonde hair girl ghost…and you can see her at 4:40 on the right.
    She’s one of the creepiest ghosts. Especially in the cellar…with the mold. She pops up A LOT down there.
