15:05 In fairness, Sebastian has a ticking clock for securing a kiss (hence the lyrics emphasizing the kiss first). Also, kissing, even in these circumstances, is usually preceded by "leaning in for a kiss". That's the signal. That is the communication and request for consent (typically signified by the kissee leaning forward in kind).

@@moonman239 Ursula was a villain being a villain :) I wouldn't be surprised if she had no problem with the idea of Ariel drowning because that would destroy Triton. Look at how much it destroyed him when his wife was taken from him in the prequel.
At least in the Hans Christian Anderson story, the sea witch told the mermaid to drink the potion while on land so she wouldn't drown. It's not as dramatic as what Disney did in the animated retelling, but at least the mermaid had a far higher chance of surviving. There was no set time limit in the story too, which gave more time for a relationship to develop, so long as the prince didn't marry someone else. Ursula basically set things up for Ariel to fail in various ways.

This movie will always remind me of the time when I worked in a certain chain seafood restaurant that rhymes with Dead Mobster. On busy evenings when there was a long wait for tables, we would bring out a TV and VCR (yes, it was that long ago) and play movies to keep the kids entertained so they wouldn’t start having meltdowns from being bored. Well, one of the movies we would play happened to be “The Little Mermaid”. I tried to point out that this might not be the most appropriate movie to show to kids who were waiting to eat in a seafood restaurant, attempting to paint a picture of little sally having a meltdown and screaming “Mommy, are we going to eat Sebastian??” Management was, of course, completely oblivious to the irony. I was but a mere six dollar an hour hostess, so what would I possibly know about management level decisions such as choosing what movies to play for children waiting to eat Flounder?
EDIT: to those asking for more of the story, sorry but there really isn’t more. I didn’t work there very long, it was a second job I had for a couple of months over 30 years ago and I honestly can’t remember if any meltdowns that occurred on my shift were due to exposure to animated seafood. I just always found it amusing that no one else there seemed to understand the irony.

as for the few days thing. women were property back then. a marriage could literally happen within a month since arranged marriages happened OFTEN. the parents would get things squared away with the husband (or his family). then poof she gets a week to at best a couple months to get to know each other. then you gotta show the family a blood stained sheet on your marriage night proving she was a virgin.
only nobility really had long term courtships since marriage amongst the poor carried a transfers of wealth/goods between the two families.

      3) Ariel goes on to sign a contract with the sea-witch and then fails to fulfill her side of the bargain.
      4) Triton signs the contract to save his daughter, the very same contract his daughter voluntarily signed because she wanted to run away.
      5) The sea-witch is slain by Eric, the guy Ariel wanted to run away with.
At no point has Ariel proven that she can be a mature, capable adult to Triton, nor would he have any reason to believe that she ran away to be with Eric more than she ran away to get away from Triton, so I don't see why Triton would bless this marriage other than Disney logic. Had the filmmakers of “The Little Mermaid” kept the deleted alternate ending, it would have given Ariel a much needed redemption arc, since Ariel’s apology in the deleted scene is a lot more *sincere* (only after she regains consciousness does she tearfully say to her father, *”Oh, Daddy. Daddy, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you...”):* ruclips.net/video/FF0_JKyPCwE/видео.htmlm29s .
According to the film’s audio commentary track, the alternate ending was cut because then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had just seen the 1988 action film “Die Hard”, and he told “The Little Mermaid” directors John Musker and Ron Clements to make the ending *”more like ‘Die Hard’” (“Guys, guys, I want to see more ‘Die Hard’!”).*
      YES, REALLY!
In other words, Katzenberg wanted to make the climax more epic, which explains why Ursula becomes gigantic in the final film.
      Damn you, Jeffrey Katzenberg! 😤
At least the Broadway version gave Ariel more agency in the climax as she kills Ursula by breaking Ursula’s conch shell into the ground, and Ariel’s apology to her father is a lot more genuine as she tells him *”I’ve caused you so much trouble. Can you ever forgive me?”:* ruclips.net/video/8YCLuyllF4A/видео.htmlm40s
Also, in the live action remake, Ariel feels actual remorse when she says to Triton, *”I’m sorry, father. This is all my fault”,* in response to Ursula telling Triton that she and Ariel made a deal.

I think biologically mermaids would be more half dolphin than half fish as their fins run parallel to their bodies. So I reckon they'd have a little pocket that their genitals live in until needed, and give birth and breastfeed.

Indeed-oh. Not denying the HISHE take was funny and insightful. It's just not absolute.
A close look at the contract suggests menfolk and merfolk do not write the same language the same way.
Allowing that she can write as detailed a message as she wants and that he'll get it, though? There's still the question of the Magicks registering true love's kiss. Can they just make out until they're in love?

15:15 Maybe but as a law student there are multiple issues, one being the fact that the terms of the contract are way to hazzy (like what exactly is a kiss of true love), two the terms are so lopsided and harsh as to be immortal so the contract would be void and three Arial is too young to form a binding contract in the first place.
