It’s undeniable that Echo has been underused in The Bad Batch - removing any reaction to Fives’ death remains one the biggest examples of wasted potential throughout the show. However, I still think it has improved him as a character. Reflecting on The Clone Wars, he was only really given minimal development and his one trait of repeating orders (hence his name) but Bad Batch has added an extra dimension to him. We are consistently shown that his worldview differs from the rest of the squad, and his values rub off on Omega - with them both lobbying to go out of their way to help people in need when it isn’t required for them to do so. We see him change his views and let go of his prejudices when rescuing the Separatist senator in season 1. I’ve seen the argument that him leaving the squad midway through season 2 is evidence of the writers running out of ideas for him, but to me it’s always felt like a logical step in his character development. Since the beginning of the series he’s wanted to do more to help the other clones, so him joining Rex makes total sense. I’m not trying to say that Bad Batch had handled him perfectly - I still think season 1 did him dirty in some respects, my point is that Bad Batch has made him into far more of a character than he ever was in The Clone Wars.

I've said it many times and I'll say it again, the actual thing holding the show back is the Bad Batch themselves. All the episodes the focusing more on things that weren"t the Bad Batch like the Hera episodes, Crosshair with Cody then Mayday, and the Senator Chuci with Rex episode etc, were honestly better than the episodes focusing on the Bad Batch. To me this show does a better job exploring the questions of what happened to the galaxy after Order 66, how did it affect the people?, how did it eventually effect the clones?. This is why I think the show should've been called Order 66: AFTERMATH, that way we can focus more on the broader subject and more of the clones like Bacara, Neyo, Thire, Appo, Bly, Boil, Doom, Stone, Delta Squad, etc.

Their lack of focus and meandering towards side quests speaks of the writers room still infected with the "spaghetti on the wall" approach that guided TCW anthology writing. If they were honest in writing Omega as the *sole* focus character and trimmed out the fat, you could have condensed TBB to a season of 20-24 episodes.
And yes, those episodes are interesting because you are watching something else other than Omega's orbit. Crosshair was interesting right up until Plan 88, and then he, like the rest of the squad decayed into boredom as his traits got assimilated into Omega. You could have written about the nature of loyalty and blind loyalty, his peculiar morality letting him be OK to kill at least two civilians, his relationship with his brothers *before* Order 66. And whilst the show "technically" did so, it was superficial and without soul.

  • @ShockwaveFPSStudios
    @ShockwaveFPSStudios Месяц назад +6

As a writer, I would’ve wrote Echo the same as what Feloni & his team wrote him, but with some alterations. For starters, once Rex & the Bad Batch rescued him during the Clone Wars Season 7, his first line since the Citadel Arc is to ask Rex where is he, and where’s Fives. Rex responds to him by saying that Fives is gone, which would’ve left the ending a bit heartwarming & sad at the same time.
Than, during Season 1 of the Bad Batch where Echo is just there, I would’ve added scenes in some episodes where Echo bonds with Omega just like with Hunter and later Crosshair, by having him & Omega have like a brother sister dynamic, compared to the father daughter dynamic Hunter & Omega sorta had, and later the grizzled uncle & niece relationship that Omega has with Crosshair. Personally, I feel like it made more sense if Echo had the closest bond with Omega, since like her, he was a newcomer serving as the little brother to the other Bad Batch members. This would’ve given their initial goodbye in Season 2 more baggage, as the audience would’ve felt emotionally attached to them since they enjoyed Echo & Omega’s sibling relationship in the first season. I also would’ve changed what Echo said after Rex mentioned Fives, by replacing it with him asking why Fives was killed. To which Rex would’ve explained his side of the events of the Fives Arc, which while it makes Echo feel even more sad Fives was killed because no one believed him… he’ll notice there’s some flaws according to Rex.
Flash forward to Season 2, there would be more scenes in the early episodes where Echo interacts with AZ more. Since Echo wants to save more clones in this season, I think this would’ve been explained more if Echo actually explains his goal to save his brothers to AZ. AZ would ask why Echo wants to do it, to which Echo brings up what happened to him in Season 7 as well as the fact that his brother Fives tried to do the same by preventing Order 66 from happening, before he got killed. AZ gets so shocked that he reveals to Echo that he knew Fives, which would’ve been an even more shock to Echo, as Rex didn’t tell him the whole story. Just as soon as they were about to talk about the FIVES Arc, they get interrupted by Tech. It’s only in another early episode where Echo asks AZ about what happened to Fives. AZ would’ve recounted the events of the Fives Arc and why no one believed Fives himself. This would’ve been heartbreaking for Echo as he felt like he should’ve been there to aid Fives unlike everyone who didn’t believe him. He would’ve also felt guilty that the clone war could’ve ended sooner, if it weren’t for Fives preventing Order 66 from happening in the first place.
I think this could’ve helped give Echo more character development as well as giving him more of a major role in the first season. What do you think.

Lowkey I wish Echo and AZI were the side characters in Ep 4 of Season 2, because Wrecker didn’t really add much to the racing subplot. If the B plot were just small scenes of Echo and AZI discussing Fives, I’d have loved that

This is exactly what I've been thinking ever since TBB season 1. In The Clone Wars S7 they made basically a whole arc about him not being dead, just used by the separatists in an incredibly tragic, cruel way, and then rescued to join the Batch, so it would seem he'd be an important part of a Bad Batch show but it turned out he was just... there, I guess, which is disapppointing honestly. After all he's a clone who's been there basically from the start of TCW, somewhat of an already established character and one many fans are gonna be at least a little bit fond of, it seems like a pretty obvious choice to focus on him a bit through things like exploring how the experience being captured impacted him, making him learn about Fives and deal with that loss, as well as showing him slowly working his way into that squad, finding his place and learning to adapt to their way of working quite different from what he was used to, his name coming from repeating orders he's been given after all.
Overall, thank you for making this video and voicing what I think many Bad Batch/Clone Wars/Echo fans agree on - Echo was criminally underused for how much potential his character had. I don't think I'll ever stop being at least a bit bitter over it. My guy deserved better.

In hindisight, it was overly generous to think that The Bad Batch was about CF99. It was always about the girl. Any character traits the Batch had was going to be passed down to Omega, rather than fleshed out as development for the character itself. In Echo's case, it was his loyalty and service to others that ultimately got Omega into the Rebellion.
But as I said, Echo as a character was never meant to grow. There's that one glimpse of PTSD and his physical condition being Corbett and Rau's contribution to lip service towards real-life veterans (similar to how Tech is the token austistic character). But disregarding his TCW arc, you could have Howzer be in the Batch and have the same effect to the group as a whole when Echo was there.
In fact, the writers are super allergic to any development outside of Omega. Tech got killed off and people spoke of his sacrifice in terms of the girl. But they seem to forget that his development in S2 was *independent* of Omega. Appreciating Serenno culture, the illegal race, possible romance with Phee, that didn't revolve around Omega's orbit. Similarly, Echo's fight for his brothers, his own trauma and past, those didn't involve her. Which was probably why the writers wrote them off...

Then when the Bad batch get into contact have Echo stay with them because during his time with Rex he feels like he doesn’t belong with them anymore ( like Hunter said to echo " if you feel you don’t belong with them come join us "). Then have him grow a bond with Omega since she’s the most welcoming member of the team and they get super close, either by being left out on missions or just feeling completely useless. Then Rex comes with the info about clones getting thrown out like trash and not liking it Echo joins back up with Rex to help his brothers.

I don't think they will kill Echo off meaning that they might continue his story in a new show hopefully a Rex & Echo spin-off (depending on how The Bad Batch ends)
So far this season the best episodes have been the episodes focusing on the Clone Rebellion & Tantiss

i hate how they threw him into the final few episodes just so the audience has to stress abt him as well

Omega & crosshair are some of your fave characters in Star Wars? Jesus Christ this is the reason disney keeps turning out slop like this, because folks will just latch onto whatever trash they see.

Unfortunately, this is true. Hunter, Tech, Wrecker and Crosshair are great characters but the way Echo's character was wasted in this show makes me sad. The second season gave a perfect opportunity for its development. An episode with him and Rex saving the clones, in which he mentioned his former squad, would have been cool, but unfortunately it didn't happen. I thought that in season 3 he would at least replace most of Tech's duties, but now Omega doesn't even mention him. I have the impression that this will not change and when he returns this season, he will simply die quickly and that's it.
