We need a netflix show about present day Steve Vai who never got over his humiliating loss and becomes a washed up drunk. He sees a kid being bullied by his gf's bf and decides to step up and become his guitar sensei. He teaches the kid to shred and finally developes a fatherly bond until Ralph Macchio comes up and opens his own guitar dojo. There are a million vids out there showing how to play difficult passages. This is the only one I have seen that shows you exactly how difficult passages weren't played. It's genius.

I have played now for 60 years, studied jazz and classical guitar in college…This is one of the most BRILLIANT and FUNNY videos i have ever seen can’t stop watching and laughing!
If you haven’t seen/heard them already, you’d probably enjoy the “shreds” videos. Basically the same concept of taking live performances by various artists and dubbing them over with the **real** sounds haha. The Creed Shreds and Slipknot Shreds videos used to crack me up though I have no idea how they’ve aged.
The OP did not explain that two guitars were differently TUNED. Clue 1: playing with slide requires a different tuning altogether. Clue 2: Butler's inability to play last parts means his guitar was wrongly tuned for the piece, but he played by the ear and fumbled over his own ignorance. THAT was the catch; Butler was capable ear player, but uneducated, which the boy recognised & took advantage of. None of this is addressed.

Knowing that Steve Vai is one of the nicest guys on the planet, and after hearing this; now it makes sense why he was making such angry and later confused faces while Ralf Machio plays guitar in that scene.
Steve Vai was still relatively unknown when this movie came out, and they really picked the right guy. He's wicked good with the whammy. And learning Eat Em and Smile introduced me to some cool bluesy riffs man!

But I remember in 1985 being heartbroken that Van Halen had broken up (right after the album 1984 lol, that makes dating this stuff easier eh?) I didn't know Steve Vai until he and Billy Sheehan teamed up to give Roth the usual guitar excellence he was accustomed to, and finding out Vai was in Crossroads was the reason I sought to watch the movie lol. What do I really know about Vai's popularity at the time, I admit... I was all of 16 and still in guitar lessons in 86 ;)

Mateo Mancuso is a phenomenal guitarist. He has set the bar super high at such a young age. Even Steve Vai himself couldn’t believe what he was hearing when he first heard Mateo.

Ralph Machio did a good job. I don’t if he played guitar at all, but the parts would have been way beyond him and it’s pretty convincing compared to other films with actors pretending to play.
Just caught this and what makes this even better is the reactions from the actors. Maybe they were reacting to exactly what Macchio was playing and they were in horror. BTW, Vai is brilliant here as a player, and an actor. This made my day and I sorely needed a good laugh. I see an entire series of 'faux' guitar playing scenes from the movies. You should be busy for a while, thank you...
Love this. Haven't laughed so much for a while lol :) I remember Steve telling us about filming this when I met him at the EVO Experience back in 2007. Apparently when he "fails" and drops to 1 knee he was laughing. They had to cut most of it but you can just see a small part of it. :)
Now that I've finally stopped laughing, oh my God that was effing hysterical! The look on the devil's and his minions' faces when Macchio is playing is priceless with this new version. hahaha And Steve Vai's blank look just makes it all the more funny. Strong work! You can trash this scene all you want but this movie inspired so many upcoming guitar players and is one of the best scenes of all time this is an all time favorite movie ever! They both are legends!
Loved this the end destroyed me! Being a guitar player I don't know if it makes it even more funny or not! Doing the slide I always thought was a clever choice because it's a bit harder to tell when he is off!
As someone that has no idea what this is supposed to sound like, this is hilarious. Just seeing the reactions is absolutely incredible, applauding this poor young man for just trying his best.
Macchio's parts sounds like when we all played Guitar Hero on expert for the first time. And Steve's face in the end is priceless in this context, we can listen to his thought going "You're a mockery of the entire art".
I went to this movie with some friends of mine who were in a band and the two guitarist both laughed at the cutting heads scene but also enjoyed it for how it was presented as people just want to enjoy the movie and Ralph Macchio's performance as he was a well liked actor during his run, especially his great role in The Outsiders!
Excellent job! It even sounds like you’re playing through a Pignose! It always cracked me up how Ralph is playing through a little battery powered Pignose but it sounds like a Fender tube amp, complete with reverb and tremolo.
Yeah if you dont look close or dont understand guitar that well,it looks real...so yeah,but for nerds like me that notice somehow stuff like this during a movie its annoying
@@mrbungle3310 it's kind of like watching Ward Carroll's "21 Cringeworthy Errors in the Movie Top Gun". Most of the stuff in it you wouldn't notice unless you served in the Navy.
I love the slight bend and you put on most of the notes, just like beginners do when they Vice grip everything and constantly pull the notes out of tune. The terrible tone and “vibrato” is also on point. 😂
Not when playing chords, however players like Justin Johnson often do tight position switches when playing in a fingerpicking style. And then there's George Benson who does it even with chords, making me wonder if there really is something to that crossroads myth.
It always made me laugh when Ralph started doing the Hammer on, and the smile fades from the Devil's face, like it's something actually "Great" as if after hearing what Steve Vai did, a simple repeated hammer on/pull off, is suddenly something to 'worry about'

That last solo brings me back to my days in college. That is exactly what the dorm rooms next to me sounded like! I think that was my friend Terry playing guitar. One time I loaned him a pick. He gave it back to me after playing that exact solo. The pick was broken and had a blood stain on it. LOL

The fact that Steve Vai would be defeated in any guitar contest is unbelievable even for a movie.
There's a couple i'd be interested in seeing, like John Petrucci and fellow DLR guitarist Jason Becker (before LGD).
Most people don't even know he exists.

Mateo Mancuso is a phenomenal guitarist. He has set the bar super high at such a young age. Even Steve Vai himself couldn’t believe what he was hearing when he first heard Mateo.

Ralph Machio did a good job. I don’t if he played guitar at all, but the parts would have been way beyond him and it’s pretty convincing compared to other films with actors pretending to play.
From what I remember Macchio took a few guitar lessons but only to be able to do a convincing mimic.

Just caught this and what makes this even better is the reactions from the actors. Maybe they were reacting to exactly what Macchio was playing and they were in horror. BTW, Vai is brilliant here as a player, and an actor. This made my day and I sorely needed a good laugh. I see an entire series of 'faux' guitar playing scenes from the movies. Love this. Haven't laughed so much for a while lol :) I remember Steve telling us about filming this when I met him at the EVO Experience back in 2007. Apparently when he "fails" and drops to 1 knee he was laughing. They had to cut most of it but you can just see a small part of it. :)
Now that I've finally stopped laughing, oh my God that was effing hysterical! The look on the devil's and his minions' faces when Macchio is playing is priceless with this new version. hahaha And Steve Vai's blank look just makes it all the more funny. Strong work! I'm off to find the Back to the Future one now. hahaha
You can trash this scene all you want but this movie inspired so many upcoming guitar players and is one of the best scenes of all time this is an all time favorite movie ever! They both are legends!
Loved this the end destroyed me! Being a guitar player I don't know if it makes it even more funny or not! Doing the slide I always thought was a clever choice because it's a bit harder to tell when he is off!
When Macchio dug deep after much frustration, and with a defiant flourish declared, "It's shreddin' time!" That was when the battle really took off!

As someone that has no idea what this is supposed to sound like, this is hilarious. Just seeing the reactions is absolutely incredible, applauding this poor young man for just trying his best.
Macchio's parts sounds like when we all played Guitar Hero on expert for the first time.
And Steve's face in the end is priceless in this context, we can listen to his thought going "You're a mockery of the entire art".

I went to this movie with some friends of mine who were in a band and the two guitarist both laughed at the cutting heads scene but also enjoyed it for how it was presented as people just want to enjoy the movie and Ralph Macchio's performance as he was a well liked actor during his run, especially his great role in The Outsiders!
Excellent job! It even sounds like you’re playing through a Pignose! It always cracked me up how Ralph is playing through a little battery powered Pignose but it sounds like a Fender tube amp, complete with reverb and tremolo.
From 5:25 it could pass for a background song in Spongebob 😂😂
For Macchio not being a guitar player I think he did a pretty good job trying to make it look real.

I love the slight bend and you put on most of the notes, just like beginners do when they Vice grip everything and constantly pull the notes out of tune. The terrible tone and “vibrato” is also on point. 😂
The chords are strong with this one! I laughed so hard! Amazing work! But, also hats off to Vai's "acting" and Macchio's miming.
The last part turned Vai's staring from "this is serious stuff he's playing, this is dangerous," to "you ok bruh? you need help?" can't stop laughing

Not when playing chords, however players like Justin Johnson often do tight position switches when playing in a fingerpicking style.
And then there's George Benson who does it even with chords, making me wonder if there really is something to that crossroads myth.

It always made me laugh when Ralph started doing the Hammer on, and the smile fades from the Devil's face, like it's something actually "Great" as if after hearing what Steve Vai did, a simple repeated hammer on/pull off, is suddenly something to 'worry about'

Funny thing to me is that those hammer ons are actually not that easy to play. If you are not good you end up sounding like this video.

That last solo brings me back to my days in college. That is exactly what the dorm rooms next to me sounded like! I think that was my friend Terry playing guitar. One time I loaned him a pick. He gave it back to me after playing that exact solo. The pick was broken and had a blood stain on it. LOL
