I agree that at least a small sample of it being played would make this a better video. Just search "Organ at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, NJ, being played" to hear it, and also note how it dominates the hall. This thing is BIG. However, that said, to truly appreciate anything this large you must actually visit the place. I imagine this massive beast would send vibrations through your bones if the organist really let loose.
If you really want to hear a great organ, get along to almost any large cathedral, no matter what, if any, your faith. It's an experience not to be forgotten.
It's just like hearing a CD of a Symphony orchestra playing the 1812 Overture, or some similar powerful classical piece, and going and hearing it live. The CD may be nice, but the live orchestra can send chills through your body.

In the late 70's I was given a tour of the organ. It was frightening to sit at the console. Just played it for a short time. Then I went to the enclosure with the 64 foot pipe and asked the organist there to play that low note while I was in the chamber.... I vibrated uncontrollably... I'll never forget the experience.

Using the organ for public events is a very important strategy! One of the largest organs in Europe, the organ in Stockholm City Hall, Sweden, built in 1925, had been silent for decades. Extensive work made by amateurs made it somewhat playable. It was re-introduced during one of the annual Nobel Prize banquets. It's now somewhat of an institution that the laureates and the royal family enters to organ music. The media attention eventually saved the instrument. A well known British organ company, used to work with very large instruments, has now restored it.

I still hope that this massive instrument is preserved in the digital realm as well, but it would probably take a small "server farm" and multiple full installs of Hauptwerk to make it so. Oh, and Thigpen rotary woofers. Even those are FRAIL compared to the mighty 64'
Dulzian... but what a dream that would be- to have a model of this console, and the means to make it live... for those of us who wouldn't be able to have access to the instrument...

I love the complexity and yet simplicity of vintage designed organs and player pianos.
I restored a rare auto tracking player piano that was made for the Chicago world fair 1933. By doing so I connected with others out there repairing pipe organs and other vintage related instruments. Old carousels with steam powered pipes. I've seen square wood pipes. San Diego CA. has a very huge outdoor organ called the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, very cool.

The Midmer-Losh/Boardwalk hall organ has these:
    -Four 61-key upper manuals
    -One 73-key mid manual
    -Two 85-key lower manual
    - 32-key pedalboard
    -1235 stops overall
The number of pipes depends on the number of keys and stops for example...If the organ has 322 keys in total (hand manual and pedalboard combined) multiplied by the number of stops (e.g: 88) then the total number of pipes will be 28,336
    One key = 1 pipe
One stop = depends on the number of organ keys

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT Год назад

It's already been counted that the organ has over 33,000 pipes. You haven't included extra pipes to cover when octave couplers are used, and mixture stops that use multiple ranks. Some string stops have more than one rank of pipes.

The organist claims that the organ is the "largest musical instrument ever built by man," but one man's creation outweighed this organ by at least 50 tons: Thaddeus Cahill's Telharmonium. The first electric musical instrument, the Telharmonium used a series of tone generators whose output was added together (additive synthesis) and the music played was transmitted over phone lines and sold to New York City hotels and other venues, much like the "Muzak" of now. Sadly none of the instruments or their recordings have survived, but the Tehlarmonium was a marvelous invention that set many precedents.

It was unfortunately never taken to the United Center on the account of being too big and expensive to move. Although some beleive differently.
