For me, Tom Petty was one of those musicians who I didn't fully appreciate till he was gone. I liked several of his songs but I didn't have any of his albums. But his death really shocked me and I started listening to all the great material of his that I had been missing out on all those years. He had one hell of a career in an industry full of one hit wonders, also rans, and never was'. He actually gave up his life for his fans, considering how his last year transpired. He was a true artist and deserves respect for it.

Steve Winwood was the opener and it was one of the most important shows I ever attended. Sitting behind my wife and I was David Geffon at this event. We had the opportunity to see him and the Heart Breakers in Ottawa merely months before his demise. Of course his influence remains and always will . The band that I myself play with always get enthusiastic comments especially on the tune Mary Janes last dance. RIP friend. I miss you
I always loved Tom Petty's music. It was very popular when I was in High School. Tom Petty really cared about his music fans. It showed when he fought to keep the price on his one Album low knowing fans couldn't afford the higher price. Not many professional musicians would do that. It is a shame he suffered so much in his final part of his life. His hip condition would have been extremely painful. But, again he probably endured the pain to perform for his beloved music fans that meant so much too him. May he rest in peace. He will be remembered for many years to come.
Fentanyl is an extremely potent drug. I've been on the fentanyl patch for over 8 years Due to bone/Blood cancer and compound fractures on my spine. I'm sure Tom was in incredible pain for him to load up on so many drugs on top of the fentanyl. Rest in peace 🙏
Tom Seemed like a very humble guy, I always liked his music and he definitely was unique and had a style of his own. Thanks for the Rock n Roll Tom, never forgotten , rip.

Definitely one of my most favorite people in music was Tom Petty. That unusual voice of Tom's was a hallmark in rock music. All of his songs tell of themes that I can relate to in my life. Knew he had some health problems, he never let it stop him from being the best he could be. ♥️RIP TOM PETTY♥️

When I was a teenager back in 1981 Tom Petty was all over the radio . The Waiting and Stop Dragging My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks would often play on the radio on my way to work over the summer. I still remember those sometimes chilly rainy early mornings 5 am commutes to work in California's central coast Monterey County. I bought my first Hi-Fi system with money earned with my summer job earnings and I would blast Tom Petty And The Heart Breakers music over my stereo system. When I reminisce that year of 1981, Tom Petty's music comes to mind. Greatest year of my youth !

Played guitar, singing, wrote all guitar and vocals, lyrics, guitar performance, vocal performance, many other instruments as co-compositional tools for furthering the final song structure, piano writing and performance, harmonica writing and performance, etc etc, depends on which song, but even more on certain songs This is not boyband, "singer", who else do you know in modern rock history who can play a guitar while singing, and accompany a really cool harp (harmonica) riff all of it together? And 100% of it was original, and to Tom Pettys Writing of all three instruments simultaneously.. and made it look like it was easy breezy..yep Legend, and never before, and never again replicated

Loyal fans knew they were going to be treated to something special when a new album came out. Uniquely Tom. When he passed I had "Most things I worry about never happen anyway" tattooed on my forearm in small script. I discovered Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers in high school “Refugee” blew me away then in college “Full Moon Fever” Running Down a Dream was just one of my favorites.
I was a graduate student at the University of Florida(UF) in Gainesville in the mid 1980s and remember hearing stories about Tom Petty when he would visit the town and the club, Dub's on 13th St(SR 441), where he performed in the early years. He told a story of how he had accidently driven his car into a nearby lake(lake Alice) on the campus of UF when he was very young.
Tom was just a great guy who everyone loved... His music is part of the soundtrack of my life... I can never hear the start of one of his songs and not smile!
I loved Tom Petty & his music. I grew up listening to allot of Tom's songs and play a few on my guitar. I'm so blessed to have seen him once come back to Ottawa's Bluesfest after so many years. been a big Petty fan for decades.. not many recall, or saw, his small role in the movie "The Postman".. but, i still see him on the damn, as he meets Cosnters character. loved his music, his style, his unique approach.. and it was a sad day when i heard he died, as i couldnt believe that nearly everyone from "The Traveling Wilburys" was now gone. there seemed no end in to the losses we were getting in the Music World, from Artists still what should have been, many more years left in their career and life.

Bummed that I never saw him live. And as someone who has broken both hips in falls, and had surgery to repair them, I can tell you how much pain he had to deal with. Fronting a band for a two hour plus rock ‘n roll concert must require huge quantities of pain meds to get through the show. Tom’s devotion to his fans cost him his life. One can only wonder how his career would have played out had he received timely medical care, including hip replacement surgery.
If only Tom had cancelled his tour to fix his hip. Fans would have understood, as would the band and road crew. I don't expect my favorite performers to put their lives in danger for me, or to play with pain.

i remember when mtv came on...petty and his gang did some cool stuff then....i have always liked their sound and the traveling wilbury's totally blew me away....in the 80s i made a cassette of petty and inxs, going back and forth between the two for more than an hour....still have it...i think we have just lived through the greatest era that has been or will be for rock and roll...soooo many many fascinating bands from 1960 to 2010....spiritual expansion defined that era...we have now entered an era of mass psychosis where creativity and uniqueness are not and will not be tolerated....so happy to have evolved with the former....
3 yrs ago i picked my guitar back up and began writing again. After my husband died it was the only peace i got. Ive gotten quite a lot better and definately owe my writing to mr. Petty. Music has literally saved my life and. Two weeks ago heard a song off wildflowers for the first time and played it after 30 seconds. Im not bragging im just happy my hard work os paying off. Ive written 17 songs just off open chords and barre chords. He showed me that this is possible. What a class act he was

In 1987, I named my son after Tom Petty. My son has been a stage technician for almost twenty years. A Tom Petty concert in 1999 ignited a spark in my son that cannot be extinguished. RIP, Mr. Petty, and thank you for everything.
Heard of him awhile back. But it's sad that he continued to destroy himself to his death. Hated that he had to go through so much pain in life. Only if someone was there to prevent such drastic actions.
Just so you know,Tom's wife told me,herself,that Tom never used the opiates during the last tour. He only ' smoked his brand'. He never took the fentanyl,until that night that his hip fracture progressed to a full break. Dana said that she didn't even know that he had the opioids,or,where he got them.
just saw Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs in Boston and they put on a show Tom Would have been proud off. I Loved Tom from the first time I heard Breaddown which was on a record for a movie called FM in 1977 and saw him and the Heartbreakers in Ct back in late 1990's Was more of a experience than a concert. Like goin to an old Christian revial as a kid.... Love and Missed by all.
There are do many great songs that didn't make it on to albums. A couple of examples are: 1. sweet william (should of been on on the Echo album) 2. Turning point (should of been on Long After Dark) 3. Mystery of love (should of been on the MOJO album).
1983 I was working late into the night at the surfboard factory with my head set on plugged into my cassette (walkman) player with "Dam the torpedo's" set to replay I know every song by heart to this day!
The Heartbreakers DO NOT perform anymore…the band members have other projects like Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs(which is INCREDIBLE, new album is awesome), and Benmont is in high demand as a session player…but The Heartbreakers died on Oct 2, 2017….
My wife and i saw him perform his full moon fever album tour . it was beyond great . i wasnt ready for how good they were and theo show aspect of it was well polished . they were a real american treasure , and a great rock and roll act . man that mike cambell is tallented too . so sad he left us early , but he also lived a charnedl ife i mean - he was lefty willbury !

As an 19-year-old kid in the summer of 1989 the album Full Moon Fever was in my cassette player. The hot humid Wyoming evenings and the song Running Down a Dream made the long lonely highways just went hand and hand. If I had known then what I know now my life would be significantly different. ✌️
Been a fan and bought his music since the '70s. Tom Petty regretted and apologized for using the Confederate flag, in reference to the photo shown in this video.
He had alot of great songs but he shouldve got the hip surgery and rehab to get off the damn drugs. People dont realize playing guitar, bass, drums, even keyboards for a living tears up joints, muscles, ligaments and wrecks your body but musicians love it and we endure it because when youre playing, youre creating magic, reaching out to and affecting people and time stands still. Most of all, once you're in it, theres nothing else you can really do as passionately for a living, but you got to leave the drugs and booze alone yall!

I always questioned the doctors who1. didn't fix his hip but thought instead 2. let's give a heroine addict opiods? Remember they prosecuted Michael Jackson doctor for that.
He was a great talent. I miss him everyday. I had some great physical pains recently and my doctor wouldn't give me pain killer, I was a 10 (on the pain scale) and they were a zero on the understanding scale, but I'm little addicted to anything.
Loved Petty since I first heard Free fallin' as an early teenager. My heart broke when I heard about his death and I still think it's sad. But the more I learn about his drug-problems the less it seems like a surprise that he died. As far as I understand he was a chain-smoker since early years and he had a lot of drug-problems during all his life. I hate him for not taking care of himself enough during the last year, but I guess he was way too stubborn to do such thing.. ;-( And of course, he didn't want to disappoint us.
If he really had a cracked hip before the tour, how did he pass the physical that is needed to secure insurance for the tour? Also, the Heartbreakers have not fully performed together since the last tour in 2017. Mike and Benmont did a few songs together. They did not release any new music-those were previously unreleased versions.
How the tour was insured has always been my question too. I’m not doubting that he suffered issues with his hip. There’s videos of Ferrone helping him on stage and footage of him hobbling off stage. If I’m not mistaken, the autopsy revealed his hip wasn’t broken but needed to be replaced. Truth is he had acetylfentanyl in his system, which isn’t prescribed because it’s a street drug. He also had other analogs of fentanyl in his system. Along with all that, he had two different benzodiazepines in his system. I highly doubt both benzodiazepines were prescribed. Personally, I think he was back to using and a worn out hip was a great cover. Tom’s music meant the world to me. It’s the damn gospel in our house. I saw TPATHB five times. He never put on anything but a great concert, and the man never put out a bad record. He was truly one of a kind.

His family put out a story about his hip, he didn't want to postpone the tour and the perceived obligation to his crew and fans, but tours get postponed all of the time and business rolls on-just look at the last few years. Very few articles on his death ever mention the fact that he was also using illegal drugs. If a doctor had prescribed all of this stuff that led to his death, like in the case of Michael Jackson-Petty's wife and daughters would have gone after that doctor hardcore and publicized it. The fact that never happened is pretty good indicator of how this went down. When Stevie Nicks shared the stage with Tom Petty in early July 2019 in London she looked back on it and said he looked very sick at the time-it wasn't just a hip issue. Clearly this wasn't just a case in October of that year when his hip broke one day and he accidently took too many prescription pain killers and overdosed. There was a lead up to what happened. So sad. And this is just speculation, but I would bet other members of The Heartbreakers saw something was wrong and might have even talked to Tom or tried to help in other ways, but the way that band worked was Tom was in charge. They have probably never said anything out of respect for the family's official account of what happened.

Sad story about Tom Petty. So many of these dedicated musicians had hard lives, are so devoted to music and their fans and keep pushing on, despite mental and physical pain and die too young, from addictions to drugs, often cause by pain, depression, earlier life traumas etc. They need help from fans. Not necessarily always financial help. Sometimes, all they need is some genuine love and affection from their many fans, but can never get any, despite their wealth and fame. That is so sad.
Surgery isn't always a slam dunk. As a nurse, most people I have seen that died either during or shortly after surgery had severe lung issues. Tom had end stage lung disease and no doubt was a poor candidate for general surgery. I would of put his odds of surviving surgery at 50% with his age and lung issues.
In the mid-70s in Tampa I seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for 98 cents in a can of food we didn't know who they were until they played that song breakdown probably only about 100 people in the audience little did we know is looking at a rock legend

I remember being a punk rocker back when "FULL MOON FEVER" came out and I would play it all the time in my '68 Impala with my girlfriend. Good times 😌

Always liked Tom Petty's music listened to him from the seventies on.
Six days after Tom,s passing I wrote a song about him. Now you are a Heartbreaker is it.
In 1987, I named my son after Tom Petty. My son has been a stage technician for almost twenty years. A Tom Petty concert in 1999 ignited a spark in my son that cannot be extinguished. RIP, Mr. Petty, and thank you for everything.
Heard of him awhile back. But it's sad that he continued to destroy himself to his death. Hated that he had to go through so much pain in life. Only if someone was there to prevent such drastic actions.

Just so you know,Tom's wife told me,herself,that Tom never used the opiates during the last tour.
He only ' smoked his brand'.
He never took the fentanyl,until that night that his hip fracture progressed to a full break.
Dana said that she didn't even know that he had the opioids,or,where he got them.

Tom was one of the great ones. There’s no telling how much more great music he could have produced had he lived on.
just saw Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs in Boston and they put on a show Tom Would have been proud off. I Loved Tom from the first time I heard Breaddown which was on a record for a movie called FM in 1977 and saw him and the Heartbreakers in Ct back in late 1990's Was more of a experience than a concert. Like goin to an old Christian revial as a kid.... Love and Missed by all.

There are do many great songs that didn't make it on to albums.
A couple of examples are: 1. sweet william (should of been on on the Echo album)
2. Turning point (should of been on Long After Dark)
3. Mystery of love (should of been on the MOJO album).

1983 I was working late into the night at the surfboard factory with my head set on plugged into my cassette (walkman) player with "Dam the torpedo's" set to replay I know every song by heart to this day!
The Heartbreakers DO NOT perform anymore…the band members have other projects like Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs(which is INCREDIBLE, new album is awesome), and Benmont is in high demand as a session player…but The Heartbreakers died on Oct 2, 2017….

When I was a kid I stayed up late one night to watch SNL and saw TP&THBs perform "Refugee" and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen to that point.
My wife and i saw him perform his full moon fever album tour . it was beyond great . i wasnt ready for how good they were and theo show aspect of it was well polished . they were a real american treasure , and a great rock and roll act . man that mike cambell is tallented too . so sad he left us early , but he also lived a charnedl ife i mean - he was lefty willbury !
I still remember crying at Bed bath and beyond when I heard the sad news. Love you forever Tom.

As an 19-year-old kid in the summer of 1989 the album Full
Moon Fever was in my cassette player. The hot humid Wyoming evenings and the song Running Down a Dream made the long lonely highways just went hand and hand.
If I had known then what I know now my life would be significantly different. ✌️
l saw Tom Petty and his band in Charlotte NC 8-10 years ago. Best concert l've seen in the past 8-10 years.

He certainly paid his dues
He had alot of great songs but he shouldve got the hip surgery and rehab to get off the damn drugs. People dont realize playing guitar, bass, drums, even keyboards for a living tears up joints, muscles, ligaments and wrecks your body but musicians love it and we endure it because when youre playing, youre creating magic, reaching out to and affecting people and time stands still. Most of all, once you're in it, theres nothing else you can really do as passionately for a living, but you got to leave the drugs and booze alone yall!

I always questioned the doctors who1. didn't fix his hip but thought instead 2. let's give a heroine addict opiods? Remember they prosecuted Michael Jackson doctor for that.
I liked a lot of his songs. One of his songs "I Won't Back Down" was one of his anti-bully songs I enjoyed listening to
You did not bring up his Mudcrutch reunion and how he toured with the band in 2017 right before he died. I saw them then in NYC and they were great.

He was a great talent. I miss him everyday. I had some great physical pains recently and my doctor wouldn't give me pain killer, I was a 10 (on the pain scale) and they were a zero on the understanding scale, but I'm little addicted to anything.

Loved Petty since I first heard Free fallin' as an early teenager. My heart broke when I heard about his death and I still think it's sad. But the more I learn about his drug-problems the less it seems like a surprise that he died. As far as I understand he was a chain-smoker since early years and he had a lot of drug-problems during all his life. I hate him for not taking care of himself enough during the last year, but I guess he was way too stubborn to do such thing.. ;-( And of course, he didn't want to disappoint us.

If he really had a cracked hip before the tour, how did he pass the physical that is needed to secure insurance for the tour?
Also, the Heartbreakers have not fully performed together since the last tour in 2017. Mike and Benmont did a few songs together. They did not release any new music-those were previously unreleased versions.
How the tour was insured has always been my question too. I’m not doubting that he suffered issues with his hip. There’s videos of Ferrone helping him on stage and footage of him hobbling off stage. If I’m not mistaken, the autopsy revealed his hip wasn’t broken but needed to be replaced.
Truth is he had acetylfentanyl in his system, which isn’t prescribed because it’s a street drug. He also had other analogs of fentanyl in his system. Along with all that, he had two different benzodiazepines in his system. I highly doubt both benzodiazepines were prescribed. Personally, I think he was back to using and a worn out hip was a great cover.
Tom’s music meant the world to me. It’s the damn gospel in our house. I saw TPATHB five times. He never put on anything but a great concert, and the man never put out a bad record. He was truly one of a kind.

His family put out a story about his hip, he didn't want to postpone the tour and the perceived obligation to his crew and fans, but tours get postponed all of the time and business rolls on-just look at the last few years. Very few articles on his death ever mention the fact that he was also using illegal drugs. If a doctor had prescribed all of this stuff that led to his death, like in the case of Michael Jackson-Petty's wife and daughters would have gone after that doctor hardcore and publicized it. The fact that never happened is pretty good indicator of how this went down. When Stevie Nicks shared the stage with Tom Petty in early July 2019 in London she looked back on it and said he looked very sick at the time-it wasn't just a hip issue. Clearly this wasn't just a case in October of that year when his hip broke one day and he accidently took too many prescription pain killers and overdosed. There was a lead up to what happened. So sad.
And this is just speculation, but I would bet other members of The Heartbreakers saw something was wrong and might have even talked to Tom or tried to help in other ways, but the way that band worked was Tom was in charge. They have probably never said anything out of respect for the family's official account of what happened.

Sad story about Tom Petty. So many of these dedicated musicians had hard lives, are so devoted to music and their fans and keep pushing on, despite mental and physical pain and die too young, from addictions to drugs, often cause by pain, depression, earlier life traumas etc. They need help from fans. Not necessarily always financial help. Sometimes, all they need is some genuine love and affection from their many fans, but can never get any, despite their wealth and fame. That is so sad.

Surgery isn't always a slam dunk. As a nurse, most people I have seen that died either during or shortly after surgery had severe lung issues. Tom had end stage lung disease and no doubt was a poor candidate for general surgery. I would of put his odds of surviving surgery at 50% with his age and lung issues.

In the mid-70s in Tampa I seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for 98 cents in a can of food we didn't know who they were until they played that song breakdown probably only about 100 people in the audience little did we know is looking at a rock legend
