Undoubtedly one of the best recordings from Earth, Wind and Fire Originally released in 1973 it is still great music today, in 2024 - i.e. 51 years later.
Unreal how good this band was. I had a radio show at my community College and I after I played evil the first time it was requested every show so I made it my opening song every day. I wrote a letter to the band care of the record company and was floored when i received a handwritten note from Maurice White along with a copy of the album, which I cherish to this day. They were super classy.
Oh my goodness. Thanks for sharing this story. Saw them live at the Fox Theater Downtown Detroit. I play this whenever I can play it on the TouchTunes jukebox. I don't care if the bar is all white. My white brothers and sisters grew up with this bad ass music too!
Wow!!! That was awesome for him to write back. I love music so much that I realize it is tge greatest gift GOD gave to mankind. But this group can never be duplicated nor reciprocated and no matter their flaws, I know GOD listened to their music and inspired them to make more. Maurice is probably singing a tune for GOD now and then!!!
Mannnnn !!!!! Wow!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!! Sad for y'all young folks who didn't get the opportunity to live life with such beautiful meaningfully expressive music 😊
EWF is without a doubt the baddest group of all time. their vocals and musicality are unparalleled no other group comes close.R.I.P. Maurice White,Don Myrick,Louis Satterfield.
I saw EW&F back in '76 after "Gratitude" came out. They remain the most phenomenal group I've ever seen.... spectacular, such talent. We are blessed by the music of EW&F....Rest in Power, Maurice-;)
Amazing how the introduction is hardcore African then goes Afro Cubian..then back to Africa and then rocks out to this masterpiece of R and B ..Black Music was incredible
@ParisRoller11 I just saw your great comment and wanted to add. One time I was doing Delta 8 gummies while enjoying the music. When I focused on the album cover I noticed the entire group is forming the pyramid eye that you find on the Dollar bill. You have to squint while the cover is arms length from you. Plus the fact that their other albums had spiritual references like I AM and All N All.
Rest in peace Maurice White. Thank you for giving us so much incredible music to remember you by. I'm crying so many tears right now. I know that none of us is leaving this earth alive, but damn - you hate to see the great ones go!

I have alwayss loved Earth Wind and Fire!from the beginning!! With that amazing band not to mention Maurice White and Phillip Bailey how could they lose? WOW! THEY ARE TIMELESD!!
I remember hearing ''Evil' back in the late spring/early summer of 1973 when I was only five years old.EWF was an integral part of my childhood. My third-oldest brother took me to see them for the first time when they headlined at the Richfield Coliseum on Thursday,August 12th,1976 (The Emotions & Ramsey Lewis opened the show.) All Acts rocked the house!! It's unfortunate that Earth,Wind & Fire never appeared on Soul Train.Soul Train was already a spectacular show. EWF would have made an already good thing that much more dynamic!!!
backyard BBQ's are not the same without EWF. they started as the "salty peppers" but became spiritual and changed their name. One of the last bands with a long standing contract. Maurice with his brothers, Verdine and Fred, kept the group on a strick practicing regimen. No drinking or drugs was allowed. They helped their background singers get their own contract (the Emotions), they boosted Stanley Turrenrine and Ramsey lewis and helped a little known group out of Chicago called "Pockets" RIP Maurice White you left your mark on the world
Yes RIP Maurice...I enjoy Phillip but Maurice's voice always did it for me. I had the opportunity to see them a few weeks ago and they still sound great. Not the same without Maurice but they we always be my favorite group. That spiritual focus got me through many a dark day.
Vernon Edmonds I remember Pockets - they are not from Chicago they are from Baltimore. Also the Emotions were not EWF's backup singers. Far from it. They were stars and had hit records BEFORE EWF when they were with Stax. The Chicago connection brought them together and Philip Bailey was dating one of them (Jeanette) . All love my fellow fan!
@@johnwatson8658 Philip Bailey and Jeanette weren't dating as you say. Philip was married at he time, but the two had a child together. And yes the sisters sang in church,, was managed by their father but they did do background vocals for EWF as well as Stevie Wonder
@@vernonedmonds8596 Here's my take. The Emotions were hitmakers when they were with Stax. Their 3 albums with Stax happened to be produced by David Porter and Isaac Hayes. The money with Stax got real funny with some of there artists____the Emotions being one of the ones affected. David Porter and Maurice White were childhood best friends, and lifelong friends, and Maurice was well aware of the Hutchinson sisters, and tried to work them out at Chess recording some demos with Charles Stepney, once Columbia gave Maurice approval to sign some acts, he brought over the Emotions, and Charles Stepney produced them, releasing "Flowers", Charles unexpectedly die, and Maurice took over production duties. The Emotions as a group, sang background on Boogie Wonderland, Wanda and her husband wrote several songs on the Raise! album, but they didn't regularly sing background for EWF. In fact, they had a royalty dispute after Boogie Wonderland that cause their separation from Maurice's ARC and Kalimba productions. They indeed very briefly did background work, but that was after they were bonafide stars, and that work had no bearing on their contract. In fact that background work was the cause of their separation. The song "Sun Goddess" did indeed provide Ramsey with a number 1 hit, but of course, Ramsey was a bonafide star for years with the Ramsey Lewis trio. Maurice was a drummer at one time with the trio. You could make the case that Ramsey Lewis made Maurice White.

How did this song get overlooked when "The Best of Earth, Wind and Fire Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2" were put together? It WAS a hit back in '73.
bc it's truth, and this world hates truth!
I agree. The best.
Sadly, those albums only featured the radio hits.
It was still too artistic. In the final analysis, their "dance" audience took over.
What a sound
There will NEVER BE MUSIC LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN!!!!!

Raised my three now 34,32 and 30 year old adult children up on this album and all of the Earth, Wind & Fire jams from back in the day! 👍😊
Pure harmony! No one else had their sound. That African instrument, beautiful!
Ah, the Village People maybe.
When I first heard this song (in the late 70s, early 80s), I just stood where I stood in absolute amazement. Fantastic album overall !!!
Wow saw them in Philly perform this at the Spectrum. Bad to the bone
I still have this record album since 73 still jams great even today.

It's Oct 2023, and I have this album. Here's a great trivia question, name the female singer in EWF. You'll win every time😆

The first time I heard Keep Your Head To The Sky , I almost it. At 10 years old .
Keep Your Head to The Sky was our “class song” in high school 1975. They don’t make music like this anymore.
This is my song for being one with the universe.
Some of these young buck's need to listen @ this song.
Man that bass, percussions, &,especially, the kalimba is killing it at the end. Luv this song!
And this remains the biggest EWF hit that featured the kalimba.
Thank you Earth Wind & Fire! Your music always, ALWAYS make me feel happy!!
