Believing just because you have 4 wheel drive your good to go, MAKES A PROBLEM EVEN WORSE. Your issues are valid to a point, but again this was forecasted days prior but with lake effect it tends to oscillate & is often hard to pinpoint areas that will be hit the hardest. And these lake effect storms are anything but rare. They happen routinely with various levels of snow fall. While this one has a higher amount with 6ft in some places its not rare or exceptional. Lake effect snow storms are a high possibility of happening when the lakes are not frozen over & wide open for anything to blow in with clouds absorbing the lake water. Once the lakes freeze over these storms are less likely to have such high snow accumulation. For the last several years due to global warming the lakes do not freeze over like they routinely did. These storm are not the exception but gradually becoming a routine with the amount of snow fall being the main thing that seperates one from another . Nothing is more annoying than hearing someone reporting on an area they truly know little to nothing about. They need to stop putting reporters in harms way to ramble on & on and all they accomplish is heightening anxiety with their lack of knowledge & exaggerations. Putting reporters in the eye of the so called "storm" (yes, pun intended) accomplishes nothing positive. If people would just listen to whats being asked of them by local officials ( staying inside & off the roads, etc) so as not to add to the storm & affects of it and make it easier for snow removal by lessening the number of people stranded and/or snowed in etc. You have people in 4 wheel drive vehicles going faster than the speed limits believing they are more than cable of getting where they need to go no matter what Mother Nature throws at them & feel no need to slow down in white out conditions & people who go out driving just to experience the "storm" up close & personal who get within it & can only drive 5mph. Both extremes make the situation at hand twice as bad than it has to actually be. Stay home, stay warm with your vehicle parked off the street, take forecasts of incoming storms seriously & ensure you have necessities & enough of food to get you through a few days if need be, make sure your pets are inside & safe and warm as well as any disable or elderly neighbors are okay. And above all stay put & ride it out. Don't keep consistently trying to go out and shovel when it's coming down that hard the only thing you'll potentially accomplish is having a medical emergency that have way slower response times during a storm. There's going to always be that handful of idiots who are over confident and want to do their own thing, DONT BE THAT IDIOT.

I live in eastern northern NY and I can’t understand why they don’t close the highways down ? The major highway near me called the Northway gets shut down in intense snow storms. NY needs to just starting to shut these highways down and they should come up with an elevated traffic infraction for being non-essential vehicles driving when a weather related state of emergency has been declared or if you get caught driving on a shut down highway. They could call it wanton reckless driving or something and have the penalty be 10 points on your license (in NY your license gets suspended at 12 points). Maybe that would stop these people from being so willfully ignorant.

we quit travelling on thanksgiving, to much stress. We live in the rocky mountains and I will only own 4wd or awd. Been stuck in snow storms, it sucks. Every time the highway is shut down it has all ways been from jack knifed semi's in the last 25 years. State laws need to stop semi's from driving in these uncommon blizzards as I feel this is 90% of the closures. If you don't have a vehicle that can handle the weather stay home that day, not worth freezing and starving on the highways...

Here in New Brunswick, Canada (borders Maine) we are really used to this weather. But we've had an explosion in population growth, people who have never seen snow and had a seven car pile-up on the bridge to the next city. It happens every year, but I expect when we get our usual '4 feet of snow over night' regularly, newer people are really going to struggle.

Funny enough the Company kept asking me when I was going to get to my next pick up over the Qualcomm as they sat in the Office in Wisconsin.

I don't think electricity semi-trucks, fire truck, snowplows, tow trucks etc. you get the picture! WILL not work in New York! This is starting in 2025 less then a month! This will impact New York State in a negative way. Cost of trucked good will skyrocket. 80% of good is trucked in to NY. @@copyprint-fz2hb So long as the propulsion part of the car isn't being used (in other words, the car is sitting in one place), the battery can heat that car for 65-70 hours if necessary.
@copyprint-fz2hb OP referred to EVs which were not the majority of cars stuck. They all were stuck, even deisel trucks.
