I played snare in the '60s. Recently, I started watching these snare features from a number of different drum corps. It took me a while, but I totally understand the verbiage, now. The head tension on today's marching snare drums are incredible! I can imagine the amount of rebound. It's a pleasure for me to see the evolution, literally, over decades. Well done!
I’m glad to see your love for it! I appreciate the old style but love the new evolution. More rebound allows for more you can do which is fantastic. Also less wrist pain!
You could probably just show up at their rehearsal and ask if you can watch while they tune and set up the drums. Most corps are pretty chill about that.
There's a whole thing on Google about how they did it in 2003, I'll bet some of that still applies today. Talks about how they get their signature sound by tuning the batter head a half step higher than their res head, but besides that, idk. Love their sound too
Darrien Spicak yeah, it's just the only thing I've ever managed to find on how the Bluecoats tune their snares, but yeah. It's probably very outdated, different staff and everything.
Learn this lick to get used to thinking outside of the lines of symmetry and block writing styles. Remember to keep those heights low so that accents can be high and you don't trip up your hands trying to play something else.
Are they speeding up on the 2nd half of measure 3 and the first beat of measure 4? I'm not sure, but it's been throwing me for a loop for awhile, and when I slow it down it doesn't sound right. Can anyone else attest to this?
The first RLL of measure 2 and measure 3, they speed up majorly on the 2 left handed notes and then they make up for the time on the rests before the flam afterward. .5x speed helped me crack this one.
Yeah it really sounds like there is a gap between the duhduhpuh and the flammed paradiddlediddle. They all seem to interpret it that way though, so I can dig it.
from reading comments of people who have marched under roger carter he seems to write things that are not meant to be played exactly as they are on paper. it’s way easier to read it as written and just be told to play it how they are than writing out exactly the rhythm they’re playing
@@FloMarching Watch the Video where kyle t. (2017 section leader) and zack (2018 section leader) did a instagram live. I even think you commented on the video. You said, "Hmmmmmmmmm..." I don't have a life and i watch a bunch of drum videos.
I apologize i found it. I was trying to learn the lick with a friend the other day and couldnt find the video so i was wondering what happened. Obviously i didnt look hard enough
SO not true... not a huge fan of the show design this year, but anything that pushes the activity in another direction in always welcome in my book... there's still a ton of more traditional corps out there! the competition between old and new school has actually made the last few years WAY more interesting! :)
Flomarching is spoiling us
Cameron Leonard yes they are
What else do you guys want to see, we'll try and hook you up
FloMarching Lot vids
FloMarching scv break it down
We're already doing that haha

@@BariManKane exactly man, as a percussionist i hate the band community cause they're all like this.
I really like the snare sound. Ah. I wish I could just intern and learn how these corps tune and do all this stuff.

bryan harris I feel like there is a lot more to be learned. Such as definitions for how to put the heads on, muffling, etc

Sam Shoemaker that's fair! But that was a different staff. I mean, it would be beneficial to see their rehearsal processes, etc. As well
Darrien Spicak yeah, it's just the only thing I've ever managed to find on how the Bluecoats tune their snares, but yeah. It's probably very outdated, different staff and everything.
LMAOOO IMAGINE WATCHING THIS AS A WIND AND HAVING NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS SAYING😂
Me when my buddy tried to explain to me what’s an Oboe. I went back to my drum .-.
*to me* his hands are aesthetically pleasing
Reminds me of the old Casey Brohard breakdown.
YES FLO I LOVE YOU
Tasty, thank the gods of FloMarching
Are those Jim Cassela 's I see?
Elijah Hall you see right my friend

Is Zack related to Pat Fitzgibbon?
This is why I scrolled the Comments. Pat & T.R. had huge ties to Madison. Anyone know?
Fitz is from Canada!
I thought minnesota was in ohio?
Can we find the sheet music to this and I personally would like the snares to break down Zero-G
Cavies next please for Breaking It Down!
How do you tune the snare to get the bluecoats snare sound
I want to know too
basically the IP version of vic firth’s learn the music
And I have nooooo problem with it
Yeah we are IP
I thought this was vater?
Super easy
Did he say page 35-36 😲 respect
Probably meant page as an drill sheet in accordance to the music. Ex. Set 35 (pg 35) to set 36 (pg36).
Is that the kid from chino hills?
Stonnne Yes

Cool and good
Will there be one of these for the tenors?
That "duhduhpuh Flam-paradiddle ninelet"... never sounds much like a ninelet to me
Yeah it really sounds like there is a gap between the duhduhpuh and the flammed paradiddlediddle. They all seem to interpret it that way though, so I can dig it.
@NICHOLAS DECOLA it's very possible, it's just a 3 on the left

Fluffy Gaming most likely IP Jim Casellas
Michael R yeah they are Jim Casella's
Is this to make up for not doing the Zack and Kyle piece?

Haven't been to a show with them yet
Why you making my boy zach verbally tell you how to play it when the sheets are right there 😂
because it's cool
Because some people can't read music well but they can follow along with someone explaining it.
Jay Privacy
exactly
I never heard the term jelly roll before. I think I probably called them offset rolls or something back in my day.
Can you feature our show form our 2018 Season ?

Oh shit bro I know of you guys, I met your bass 4 at Dayton
Or bass 5 I forget, his ig has "marky" in it
Mike L thanks bro it’s nice to hear from ya
Dudupah, flam paradiddle-diddle ninelet. Like i get whatcha sayin but you say it as if any rando off the street should know what that means
I know half now and I'm only 12
"duh duh puh"
I thought it was called a Puh-Duh-Duh but okay 😇
cool lick though, fun to play
Youngy ASMR a puh duh duh is RLL not RRL
Minusbrush
Ah I see
R/whoosh
I’ve seen Gridbook spell it “pugaduh.” I think there’s a couple different ways people say it that all closely resemble the same sound.😅
Why would anyone say "pugaduh"?
1:51 he says "...and then a paradiddle diddle with a flam on the down beat" It should be a diddle on the down beat not a flam. jus FYI
incorrect it’s literally a flam on the downbeat try again
Zach is my least favorite center snare for the 2018 bluecoats
Chase Williams Are there more? And where
