One of my earliest memories of the railway was a Merchant Navy thundering through St Denys while I was sat on a Hampshire Unit from Fareham. 13 years later, I would be working on the Railway at Southampton on the St Denys Totton resignalling scheme as a PW junior technical officer.
Well done you for capturing this as a lad. My late father did a lot of colour filming of the same era, but I was just a bit too young to get into it then.
A FEW DETAILS ! Note: From 4:06 to 4:30 Southampton Central station is already under reconstruction to modernise it for its new role as plain "Southampton", and the introduction of 3rd rail electric services. The other station "Southampton Terminus" having already closed. At 4:34 to 4:40 can be seen the firemen up in the tender quickly raking some coal forward in the tender of a "West Country" before restarting a London bound express, involving the long haul upgrade between Eastleigh & Micheldever. At 4:45 BR design Standard Class 5 4-6-0 73080 still appears to have its nameplates "Merlin". Most of these SR Standard 5's had already been "de-named" by 1965-6 !

Well thanks for those details. Of course there is now Southampton Airport Parkway Station, and Southampton became Southampton Central again in 1994.
I remember those days well - everything was so grubby.
Yes but so much more interesting.
