Just before I turned 16, my best friend and crush at the time was murdered by his mother. It was an extremely traumatic experience and for about a year I was having a really difficult time handling his death. Then I got off the bus one day and a girl I knew told me there was a cat stuck in a wall and, at first, I thought she was being dramatic and told her to leave it be and it would leave on its own because that was usually the kind of person she was, but I went to go check with her because she insisted and I’d been working with animals since I was young and knew how to handle them.
Like I thought, the kitten was terrified and wedged itself in and it wasn’t necessarily stuck…. but it was tiny, frozen in the middle of November or December, and at first I thought its eyes were glued shut like sick kittens usually had happen.
So I took off my coat and put it in front of the hole, then gently spoke to and pet the kitten until it willingly walked out onto my coat. I then skipped class with this tiny thing bundled up in my coat, called my mom, and told her I was bringing home a sick kitten, promised her I didn’t intend to keep it but I was afraid it was going to die and needed to help. She couldn’t pick it up so I went to the Agricultural building and they helped me clean out an old rabbit’s cage, helped me find some meat to feed him, and got him all set up inside of there. I went the day without my coat so he’d have something soft and warm to curl up on and sacrificed the chicken in my lunch to make sure that he ate several times that day.
When I got home, I tried to clean his eyes with a soft rag dampened with warm water, like you’re supposed to, and realized his eyes weren’t glued shut but completely malformed. When they opened, they were too small and there was a thick white membrane over one and the other looked like an actual eye, but the pupil was off center in the iris and triangle shaped instead.
Turned out he was mostly blind and he spent the first several days only leaving my bed to use the litter box. Tiny black and white kitten with a splash of white on his chest that looked like the bat symbol on Batman, so I named him Wayne. He slept next to me and when I went to school, my mom took him to work with her to make sure he was taken care of. I was having a hard time finding a home for him, though, because not a lot of people like cats, especially not wanting to deal with a disabled one, but one day my dad came into the room and sat with me and talked to me about how he had been worried about my mental health since the previous year and that he felt I needed Wayne.
And I did. He became my best friend. He slept on my chest until he was big enough to realize he was getting to heavy for my old rib injury, then he’d slip under the covers and lay on his back like a human while using my shoulder as a pillow. He would run into walls and such from time to time because his vision was so bad it was practically nonexistent, but he still liked to spend time outside and would play tag with me and when certain people came over he’d jump on the counter to jump into their arms and give them an almost human hug. Whenever he heard me come home he’d instantly stop whatever he was doing to come say hi to me and he became my life as much as I was his.
He didn’t live long due to his birth defects, only about two years total, but that time with him was exactly what I needed. Because of him and my friend, I learned that death never gets any easier. I’m 22 now, turning 23 next month, and I still cry when I think of the two of them, but I’m so glad I had both of them in my life. Because of both of them and the experiences I went through in the aftermath, I know what true love is and what it feels like to be at your lowest point and still be able to find something to hold onto and find hope and love. I don’t believe bad things happen for a reason or to teach you a lesson. I can’t find that as anything but manipulative and cruel to say and it was part of why I had survivor’s guilt for so long, but learning comes from hardship either way and it should not be the focus to take away, but the hope in which to carry through.

My worst fish death was my beautiful fantail girl called Boo
She had an injury by her mouth and even after trying to treat her properly she developed cottonmouth and eventually succumbed to it. It also didn't help that she was an older girl
I adored that fish and it was really hard to see her go

@hell ño It's a bacteria that looks like cotton wool developing in or around the mouth. It can be treated if spotted early but my girl was just too old to fight it off. It is also known as Columnaris

My worst lost was yesterday when I came back from my aquarium science lab to find out my clownfish jumped out of my 16 gallon coral tank and was very dried up and dead when I got home. I have only recently returned to fish keeping, I got a betta from the PetSmart I worked at for nearly free. He was sickly, small, discolored, no fins. I watched him for 2 weeks, every week saying 'if he's still here I'll take him home ... and I finally did. Had him for a year now, he's in a 5.5 long planted, he's been with me through my mistakes and even a move from southern California to northern California where he road with me in a cooler and transferred in a breather bag. He's got such a personality and genuinely seems to recognize me. His colors have all grown in, his fins are nice and long again. I love this fish and I never would have expected it. Hearing you talk about your betta dying makes me terrified of when he goes. These little fish can be amazing.

I'm new to fish keeping, but I've had an RES turtle die on me. Was given one as a gift and I admit I didn't know what I was doing with them for probably the first 4 years or so, but I eventually got a nice big tank for it, got better filtration, and even a bigger dock. I actually started caring for it. He died at 8 years old, which seems pretty early to me. I'm not quite sure what went wrong, but I hope it wasn't my negligence in the first years I had him. Definitely gonna use it as a learning experience going forward.

Though dark, I believe this video is essential to help all of us fish keepers going. You can't be positive without a bit of negativity in life.
My most painful death was probably Maggie the Rat - the sweetest, smartest girl you'd ever know. I was devastated when she passed, breaking down on a weekly basis for over 2 years. I still think of that silly rat and have a picture of her pasted on my wall for everyone to see. She was my girl, my best friend, and I never could've gone on without her.
The worst thing about running a rescue is the insane amount of death you see.

Every pet I've had I've cried over to some extent, but the one that sticks out was a pet that wasn't even mine its entire life.
When I was younger, we had a chocolate lab pup, and we had to rehome her because of family reasons.
I met her again a few times as an adult dog, and she was happy and kind of fat. I was stoked for her. She had the world.
But the hardest day was the day she came into the veterinary clinic I worked at, seizing violently and old. Her humans decided to say good-bye that day, and I cried alongside them for a long time. She had a good life. It was still hard. She was 11.

It's been a few months and I think the only reason I'm not badly depressed is thanks to my cats, I still miss her

For me, it was my third betta spawn and half my fish room. I had 3 1/2 months raising the babies and went through a normal water change cycle. I did nothing different than any other time. I started losing fish, en mass, within hours. I checked everything and had no idea what it was. It turns out that the city was replacing water pipes in my neighborhood so it was likely a chloramine spike or another additive that I didn't know about. My heart broke, I spent days crying while pulling dead fish from tanks. I stopped my hobby right then and there. I started researching water filtration systems and put one in for my fish room. It took me two years to build my confidence back up enough to start replacing the fish I lost. Now, I'm still not where I was but getting closer every day. I've got my first batch of baby bristlenose in the tank now and will breed some of my bettas very soon. Don't let your losses defeat you, learn and grow from them. ❤❤❤

I'm 66 so have had many cats, dogs, horses, the odd bird and lizard and goat and one ferret die over the years. You never forget them...
A friend gave me their 36 gallon tank back in January 2021 (they had to move and there was no room for it). I did the research, found Fish for Thought, stocked with plants, simple fathead minnows and cherry shrimp.
There were some minnow losses as I figured things out, but the worst was ...
I'd developed a fabulous colony of shrimp, probably a hundred, breeding in every color possible. They were everywhere, in all stages of development from tiny juveniles to adults.
Then I Frontlined the cats, and must have somehow contaminated the tank. Every. Single. Shrimp. Fell out of the sky.
I went through massive water changes, cycling the tank (fish and snails were fine) and finally re-introduced shrimp. Now there are a few adults and I counted 4 juveniles. Now maniacal about washing and rinsing hands before touching the water!

I was a vet's assistant for seven years and have had countless pets all my life. Death is a common enough occurrence but that doesn't mean you are in any way immune to the grief. It doesn't get "easier", you're just in better control of your emotions but you absolutely still feel it all.
One of my worst losses was my green-cheeked Amazon, Koko. He was with me for more than half my life and even though he was my Mr. Grumpyfeathers that hated most of the world, he adored me and I him. I had adopted him from a woman who sadly was no longer physically able to care for him when I was fifteen. He was a miserable bird when I got him, filthy from tobacco, poor diet, unsocialized. It took years for him to shed all of his nasty, damaged feathers and to lose all the nicotine staining on his beak.
I lost him to a brain tumor about six weeks after his 42nd Hatchday. I knew he was quite elderly for his species and was going blind in one eye but once he started having seizures, he deteriorated so quickly. I'm so glad I was able to be with him at the end even though that hurt so much.
Stay with your pets when it is time to say goodbye. You owe them that mercy and sense of safety when it is their time.

For me, my worst fish death happened last November. I had gotten a new betta for my (several years established and cycled) tank, and he was an absolutely gorgeous little guy. He had a lot of personality and always swam up to the glass to see me. While I had him, I had him gotten a house decoration and he would often swim in and out of the windows of the house. Then one day, he started to act more lethargic and started to stop going after food whenever I tried to feed him. There were no physical signs of the common fish diseases, and I found out much too late that he had sepsis. I did start putting medicine in the tank, and he had started to improve slightly, but one day I got home from a later shift at work and he was floating around on his side barely breathing. The next morning I found him dead. I was crushed, as I had tried my hardest to try and treat him and get him to recover. I still feel extremely guilty over his death since I should have started treating him as soon as he started acting weird, but I wanted to figure out what was wrong with him first just in case it wasn’t an illness. :( (edit: I should clarify that I was testing my water a lot throughout this and the entire time the parameters were in near perfect ranges)

I habe owned so many animals in 20 years exotics mostly.
I thought I was just starting to get used to animals dying and it would get easier.
Three months ago my bearded dragon died young from a tumor in his head.
    I cried SO MUCH.
I don't think I have cried that much over any animal so yeah guess it always stays hard.
I still get a bit teary every time I think about him, it seemed to be so obviously painful that otherpeople saw my pain and I got a new baby beardie as a surprise.
Does not make me forget my previous boi but defenitely helped to fill the void that can only be taken by a lizard with a huge personality :D

Had a dark blue vieltail betta (named Thidwick) during my early years of high school. Had him for almost 3 years. Didn't know a lot about fish at the time so I had him in a 1 gallon tank on my desk where I would do homework and talk to him sometimes. One day he passed from old age and I was actually devastated. I never in a thousand years thought I'd cry over a fish, but it goes to show how special even the smallest pet can be. I've owned several bettas after that but never felt the same bond, though I still cared for them the same.

I lost two bettas within the span of four or five months. The first never showed any signs of illness or injury, and he died while I was at my grandfather's. The second developed a massive abscess, and it burst while I was asleep. He was still alive, but he couldn't get to the surface for air or food. I decided to put him down, and I was with him until he fell asleep. They're both buried right next to my bedroom window so they're never far away. They were my best friends for the longest time.

I wrote an essay sorry 😔
I cant choose between my pets but i really miss my romanian loach (named pike because its spots reminded me of one) , i didnt have it for very long, just about 2 or 3 years but it was a great pet. I didn't really have much to work with so i had to improvise. It was rescued from a drying stream, just sitting in a tiny puddle. Ive visited that stream for years and in a way i mimicked that enviorment. I took a pretty big sort of tub, put a bit of gravel on a side and loads of sand (they burrow), driftwood, a broken ceramic vase i also found on the stream, clean fresh water, live plants also picked form the stream and some other little fish (don't worry, they got along well). I fed them what they would find in the wild, fresh bloodworms, dead bugs and mosquito larva. Since they were native fish i kept them outside (for the normal cold they are used to) and everything went well. I hand fed them and the loach sometimes came to my hand for pets and curled up in it. It obviously recognised me because it showed some fear at first when it met my friend which it didn't see before. One winter i had to leave for a week and left someone else to take care of the fish. It was extremely cold for a week. I didnt know that... When i came back everything was frozen. Top to bottom. Sat there for hours...

I lost my butterfly telescope fancy Kohaku to dropsy two days ago. His scales had abruptly and drastically pineconed on thursday of the previous week, but I *should* have suspected dropsy because he had been super lethargic for a week before the onset of the late stage. I didn't notice any additional swelling (hard to determine with fancies sometimes, anyhow), but in retrospect the slowness was a dead giveaway. He was my little buddy, super inquisitive and my favourite goldfish at that point. He was about 4,5 to 5 years old, and was my biggest goldie ever at close to 15cm in length from nose to tailtip. When he was littler he had bright white scales with very lovely Hi-red markings (hence the name Kohaku) although his markings did reduce with age as sometimes happens with goldfish.
I'm under no illusion that it wasn't anything I could have prevented; I was neglectful for a while, failing to do the regular water changes he and my two other fancies needed. They have a 125L tank with a BIG CrystalProfi external filter, but no amount of filtration in the world will help if that water doesn't get sufficiently freshened up for a few months... I'm going to try to do better for my remaining duo, Sanke (calico fancy) and Kintsugi (white telescope fancy with a few red splotches and a golden belly - he's named for the Japanese art of restoring damaged pottery with golden laquer. I named him such because he was a rescue, his previous owner planned to flush him).
I wanted to humanely euthanize Kohaku with clove oil, but unfortunately he passed on his own before I could find the sedative. I'll probably think about and regret my failing him for years.

Our 5 year old rough collie had to be put down. He had a bunch of allergies and sicknesses. He was the only one out of his siblings that survived. He still lived a decent life up until he was attacted by a saint bernard. The dog was huge and just tossed our medium-sized dog around like a toy. It’s an image i can never get out of my brain. Our dog was physically fine but he became really stressed, fearful and even agressive. I know that he was sick to begin with and wouldn’t have lived for that long anyway but it still makes me feel really Sad.

My dad at some point got a pet fish because he thought they would be low maintenance and he was working a lot at the time so he thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a fish and that he wouldn't feel bad for leaving. He had no idea how emotionally bonded he would get to the fish, and from all the stories I heard, the fish sounded really cute. When we got him, we named him horie, short for horizon. It was because his coloring looks like the horizon. Anyway, he ended up getting so emotionally bonded to the fish, that he did feel bad anyways whenever he would leave for work. He said after a while the fish seemed to feel emotionally neglected and started turning his back then towards him. He felt really bad because he had to work there were times he worked at home and the fish loved hanging out with him. He said horie was fascinated by his work and would enjoy watching him. It sounded really cute and apparently one time, my dad came home from work, to find horie belly up

The deaths that hit hardest to me have got to be my first cat Greg, my hamster, Penelope and my favourite white cloud, Steve.
Greg was a pretty old cat when he came to us but he learned to high five and beg like you can teach a dog. He could even do agility! He loved to play with hair bobbles and tin foil, and was probably the most intelligent cat I’ve ever met! He was such a special little guy and we had him for about seven years before he passed at the age of 20. I miss him a lot and still think about him sometimes.
Penelope was the cutest Syrian hamster. She lived in a 1.6m long mansion in the form of a big glass cabinet laid on its back. Her favourite thing to do was to dig in massive piles of bedding, dig in sand, and eat the bark off apple sticks we’d bring her from the garden. We made her pancakes every Pancake Tuesday too and she was such a big part of the family. When she got to about 2 years old she started slowing down, finding it harder to navigate her big cage and having breathing difficulties. Unfortunately I didn’t recognise these breathing difficulties until after she was gone - I thought she was just sneezing as she sometimes would. Penelope spent her final days wrapped in a blanket beside my pillow on my bed so I could keep an eye on her in the night and keep her warm 24/7. She passed away in my hands and I’ve never been so devastated by a pets death before.
Steve was one of my first fish. Even though I’d done research about fishkeeping, I didn’t really give my white cloud minnows the best life they could have had. I was 13 when we got them and I kept 8 in a tall 5gallon which is something I still feel bad about. Steve had (I think) some form of scoliosis but would always come over to say hi when I was there. He was so cute and seemed to have much more personality than the others. He passed of swim bladder problems after about a year. I tried to treat them but eventually all of my other fish passed at around 3 years after getting them. It was also from swim bladder disease, or at least that’s what I thought. Idk if it was genetic or if I was consistently over feeding them and it was constipation or what but I guess we’ll never know. Looking back, I know my care was lacking and I still think of Steve and his buddies sometimes as I know I could have given them a better life if I had them now. But they taught me a lot and I am really thankful for them!

Never got to find him to Bury him. Then a had a kitty for about a year, she was a kitten from my flame point Siamese. She got a type of pneumonia that she would end up dying from because treatment was 10K + and I couldn’t afford it so we had to put her down on Christmas Day

Had a fully scaled mirror carp that was with all my koi. A read bad storm hit and the pond overflowed. During this process the fish got out of the pond and managed to get stuck on a patch of dry land and died. I had it for 2 years. Grew it to twice the size it was. Sadly the regular common that i had with it suffered the same fate during a seperate storm. I have since changed the netting over the pond and done plenty of reconstruction with it . no issues since, even with storms. Sad days though

Last night when I went to go check on my bettas tank, I found him laying on the substrate and it immediately just struck me in the heart. He was one of our rescued bettas except he was the sickest one. I had tried absolutely everything but eventually I noticed that he just wasn’t getting better like our other bettas were. Our other bettas were suffering from fin rot that has started to heal but he didn’t have fin rot- his fins were beautiful and full but his fins looked floppy almost, he looked exhausted all the time. I never was too sure what he was dealing with but I wish I could go back and do something different for him. Losing a fish you’ve put so much time into is heartbreaking. Please let this be a reminder: When buying betta fish, please don’t neglect them. These are high maintenance fish. Once I rescued my first betta fish from a neglectful owner, I started realizing how neglected bettas were and it broke me. Sometimes you can save them but you can prevent neglecting them by just not buying them and shoving them into tiny tanks. They are living animals, please treat them with decency.

He talked, called me mommy, he said his name every time he entered a room. He was so sweet. I loved that bird so much. If I wasn’t feeling well and was still in bed, he would go get my husband from his office to follow him to check on me. He was so smart for such a little bird.

I had 2 fish, Ross and joey, who were my 1st fishes. One was a black moor, the other was an orange guy that I can't remember the species of (he was pretty similar). I loved these guys.
First to die was Ross and it was my first day of secondary school, absolutely devastated me. Went in there miserable. 2nd was joey who'd taken a turn for the worse in health around the same time. I handled the 2nd one a lot better but still hit me hard.
What made it worse was the fact I knew I could've taken better care of them. Don't get me wrong they had a well sized tank and well fed, but I felt my tank could've been maintained better.
Fast forward a few years and I come across this channel. You have singlehandedly reignited my desire to keep fish.

When i was around 8-11 years old, my family owned 6 cats. (Two of them had four kittens) Tragically, one kitten got crushed in a freak accident with a spinning recliner.(the chair for some reason could be tilted easily) well the kitten my mother and claimed as her little baby had walked underneath it mid-tilt. I remember coming out of the bathroom and my sister was screaming about “Meeko and the brown chair”
I was the one who lifted the chair and dragged his poor, tiny, lifeless body out from under it. I screamed at the top of my lungs “Meeko’s Dead! Meeko’s Dead!” And my mother and father running and collapsing on the stairs after a ran to them. My father took his body from my arms and took him into the laundry room. I had gazed at his poor little face one last time before her was wrapped in a blanket and trash-bag. Me and my younger sister (of 2) helped my mother bury him in my grandparents backyard. I was the one who got to lay the bag in the ground.

This is gonna sound like a joke to some people but I had a fish named fatty bubbles. He was a typical fish that I bought at petco when I was 3. He grew into this massive, gorgeous looking fish, kinda similar to koi patterns and colors. He could do little tricks and I could always talk to him. Up until around 3 months at go. I woke up to a strange buzzing noise, and noticed he got caught in his filter. I immediately pulled him off, unplugged the filter. He looked lifeless, I started to cry. For the next few days, he would mostly sit at the bottom of the tank, slowly breathing, and would occasionally twitch. I thought maybe if I plug in the filter again that will help. He got caught again, but still lived. But he hadn’t eaten in 5 days now. So I put my hand in his tank one last time, he swam into my hand and rested there. I said my goodbyes and euthanized him with clove oil. I painted him a box that looked like his gravel. It’s still so weird, waking up and looking over at my dresser and not seeing him. Loyal fish of 11 years.

My hardest pet death was my 18 year old cat. I got him as a rescue from a vet in Virginia, he was two weeks old and someone killed his mother. We bottle fed him and he went on to be a prominent member of our family. We were a military family and he travelled all over the country with us, Alaska, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia.. His death was very heavy on all four of the kids, we knew he was close to death and all of the kids spent that night in the living room taking turns holding him and petting him until he passed away. Our youngest daughter had never known life without him, he was older than her and passed when she was a teen, she has a locket with some of his fur and a tiny picture. Oddly Bella posted a pic of him on her fb today saying how much she still misses him... He has been gone for five years.

Both of them were nurses and she lives alone so she just asked my brother if he wants it. He took it and we took care of it for about 3 years then it for some reason, after we changed the water of the aquarium, about I think 3 days later, little white ropes/hairs started appearing on its left fin. But after a week or so, it died and in that week, the little hairs spread throughout the fish. We did treat the fish but most of us were busy when it happened so when we're not home, we're just hoping for the best

I just cared so much and so many people thought it was weird for me to be so concerned for a fish. But he was oddly smart? He’d rearrange the rocks in his tank then look at me because he knew I’d hear it. So he’d throw rocks to get my attention but would stop as soon as I looked at him. He loved attention! My uncle had adopted three kittens from the same mother, and told my family we could pick one out and keep it as our own. That cat was our baby. But the other two, were my uncle’s. My uncle didn’t stay at home much so he would always ask me to clean their litter and play with them. Eventually I felt like they were my cats. Sometimes we brought them to our house and whenever we did, they would sleep in my bed.
A few years ago we had to give them away, and it was devastating. The hardest part is that I’ll never get them back because their new owners love them too much and couldn’t part with them. I haven’t gotten to see them since. It’s almost like they’re dead, since I’ll never see them again. I think about them all the time and I still cry at night sometimes. I’ve moved on a bit but I’ll always love and think of them.

Then there was Sport, Sport had useless hind legs, due a calcium deficiency, but he was so trusting and sweet, he'd eat from my dad's hand and he would come by to great us every single day, then he got attacked by a hawk, we scared off the hawk the first two times and we thought he was safe, but after that day we didn't see him again. Bless his little heart.

In the middle of it myself decided I could keep my room running while I changed living situations and between it taking 3 weeks longer than expected to move the fish room and a tank I couldn’t afford to re buy breaking I’ve lost quite a few. worst part is I should have known better and just given away most of the stock the fish are the cheapest part of the hobby for me

I can relate a few weeks ago my dog was killed in front of me and she died halfway to the vet and i look at both of my spiders and lizards and worry how I'll handle their deaths but yeah it's hard and confusing

Lost my cat (seen in thumbnail) in 2019 that I rescued and had for 15 years. We had a deep bond. Still struggling with that loss.
