I'm pretty sure Steve doesn't use brushes creating his artwork. I'm convinced that's actually a magic wand. Or at least, he makes it look like one in his hands. Always amazed at what appears at the end of his videos from a once blank canvas.
This channel is pure gold. The name "Mind of Watercolor" is spot on -- many other channels describe technique, but Steve articulates the mindset and it is invaluable. Thanks a ton Steve!
So true….you just make these pictures appear out of thin air. I love them and especially this one. I’ve never tried to lighten in touches here and there. Going to try this soon. Your art is amazing. 💞💞💞💞
I picked up another block of 140lb Collection recently but didn't realise until I used it that it was the Rough paper. The cover looks so similar to cold press it's easy to miss that difference. The Rough is wonderful too
well that was fun to watch. Today was the first day i actually dropped paint and let it spread. So fun . I honored the curling event in the olympics by sweeping ( adding water) to direct the puck( flowing paint ) to where it needs to go a bit. I learn so much from you
After watching your video, I had to buy the paper. Meanwhile I had time to test and compare. For my technique with use of much water, the Hahnemuehle has now become my favorite. Even with the 140 lb paper there is not much buckling, and it becomes flat again after drying. The tape doesn't rip/ damage the paper at all (problem with other Hahnemuehle papers in the past), and the block is glued just perfectly. Although it is pretty expensive even in Germany, I will buy more of this paper - I couldn't find anything bad about it up to now. Just fun to.paint on it.
I've recently finished watching all your landscape playlist, and all your trees playlist... so... *lots* of videos ; ) and in the past year I've watched _many_ other watercolor videos on youtube, but your content stands out not only for the art aspect (beautiful art), but also by how well you capture the process: from the quality of the image (lighting and camera positioning) to the editing, to the music and the commentary, which is great both in audio quality and actual content... always very informative, without sounding too academic; it is encouraging and relaxing. At times it reminds me of Bob Ross, which I know you'll understand to be high praise, but always with your own personality showing through. Your videos are friendly and relatable, and as beautifully crafted as your paintings. Thank you for taking so much care to share your knowledge and art : )
I grew up using 140 pound, always disappointed and frustrated by the buckling, now I have the answer, thank you. Makes sense, Opa had no issue with the 140 pound, why he gave me pieces as a boy until graduated to a tablet, he used a dry technique most of the time. I chuckled about painting on the back side, Opa did amazing paintings on either side and drove Oma crazy as then she didn't know which side to frame. Ha.
Thanks for adding the music credit info. SO? when do we get the treat of the background music being your classical guitar picking style??? Please? Can't wait!!! Great demo by the way, great to see the white ink demo'd. Thanks for always sharing these pearls Steve.
Thank you for both the demo and the Middle Earth music. The combination was exactly what I needed. This is using the ink in a way I had not considered at all! I am going to try a similar technique and the glazing as well.
It is a real pleasure to see your spontanous painting to born. A magical moment.🙏🙏 and a so beautifull landscape appears...like in a dream !! Thank you very much for sharing such realisation 👍👍👏👏🙏🙏
I learn so much by watching your videos! When you do these spontaneous paintings, I almost have the sense that I am seeing opportunities and potential through your eyes. It is “trippy”😜 I also appreciate how you end each video with a scripture. It is truly a blessing❤️ Thank you so much🙏🏻
That was an absolutely beautiful painting. I’m amazed how your brain sees and thinks. To create something from shapes with such a limited pallet is amazing. Love it!
If you can get your hands on it, I can also recommend the sketch paper from this collection. It's much thinner but also made of 100% cotton and much more affordable - I found it a joy to use in watercolor sketchbooks. It buckled but kind of predictably if that makes sense and once dry it's completely flat for me again.
Ya and I went and ordered some of that stuff after I was done watching you last week…lol… it’s already coming on Tuesday.. I immediately thought, oh that would make good snow and it would stay put when I wanted it to.
Such a fantastic piece again. This is the style from you, I love the most and these colors...... This deserves a spot on a big open wall in someone's livingroom.
I did a paper test with hahnemühle collection hot, cold pressed and rough compared with arches cold pressed and I found that the colours are more vibrant on all hahnemühle collection and more dull on arches cold press. just a tip 😊
I checked it against the extra bright Arches sheets and they looked the same. Maybe it was the regular Arches that you compared. Either one is great though.
@@jenniefrench1338 arches cold pressed block. I made a video of it. I had a scrap of paper left over from a sheet that I have cut in smaller size out of a block for a painting. it was clearly noticeable that the colours are more vibrant on hahnemühle collection. plus hahnemühle collection paper is vegan my most reason I prefer it above other's. 😊
@@jenniefrench1338 can't say as I only tried arches, Saunders Waterford and hahnemühle collection and I found hahnemühle collection rough giving the best results. I have some other brand paper sheets laying around to try out but hahnemühle is my to go paper. what's your experience with agave paper? is it any good?
@@BrendaArtist Well I have used many kinds out there. I found the agave paper workable but some specific techniques were a bit different. It’s a little hard to explain when you get used to a certain kind. No complaint on the sizing and I think that most would probably not notice a difference. I did with the amount of time to be able to charge the wash but it is very do able. I like Saunders Waterford, Arches, Lanaquarelle and the Cezanne most though. It would be nice to have our supplies earth friendly but even in the brush area artificial, nylon bristles are like plastic and well sable is the tail of a weasel so it definitely is a personal decision. Take care. It does work great with my colored pencils too
WOW!! You stated you started out with no particular idea what you were going to paint. Not too bad for something on the fly. Really beautiful to look at and I almost immediately wondered where I could hang it here in the house. I have never tried Hahnemuhle papers of any weight. In fact, I have yet to see any for sale at any of the local art supply stores. Matter of fact, I have yet to see the white ink you used. Maybe I need to get out more and browse all the local art stores. I continue to watch my way through everything I can find on RUclips. From what is posted it will be awhile before I get caught up, but it is worth every minute. Great classes and tips for any and all watercolorists. Thanks again. -OkieSketcher1949
I don't find many of these items either except in the biggest art stores in large cities. Most I order from Amazon, Jerry's Artarama, Blick, or Cheap Joes.
@@mindofwatercolor Agreed. I try to buy local as much as possible, but there are times locals can’t or won’t order an item for you. When that occurs I go to the old computer and start looking for the best price I can find on the item I want. -OkieSketcher1949
That was beautiful! I think it is my favorite spontaneous painting of yours. Thank you so much for always making such useful and helpful content! I’ve been teaching myself for a year, but I consider you one of my mentors!
This was definitely a wonderful painting to watch you do. It’s always magical to see how you make a spontaneous landscape with a little splash of color here and there. It was even more fascinating with the additional music to give it some mystical vibes. You always seem to make it look so simple, easy, & relaxing. Thanks for sharing this with us and constantly making us happy & inspired.
What a beautiful painting!! I once did a painting in that style and it’s still one of my husband’s favourites. I bought the arches thick paper ages ago for a commission, which I ended up using a different paper for, so I should really give it a go - too expensive to have lying around 😅
Wow just wow. Love when you do these little paintings. Oh my that white is amazing. I have some cotton rag I’ve been saving (five big sheets) I’m gonna cut some of and do this this afternoon, well not exactly this I beat I end up with a castle and yes more than likely a dragon flying, just me. I must of missed the one on white highlight paint, going to have a look see now before I forget. Thank you for a wonderful video.
Wow. Just... wow. You never fail to amaze me. LOVE this so much Steve! I am so glad I ordered some of that Zig white ink after watching your last video. But I have to be extra-patient: it isn't due to arrive up here until March! *sigh* Ah well, I shall have to re-watch this once it comes. Thanks so much as always for your inspiration and education.
Just purchased a couple of blocks of this paper. I have watched videos where artists are priming it with several layers of gesso and painting with oils.
YES! I used to do that in my illustration days too. It was a common illustrator's technique. Gessoed paper provides an absolutely wonderful surface tooth. I hate canvas texture and it's usually not too friendly to scanners either. Hi res scanning used to require wrapping the work around a drum. If the work is rigid (like canvas or panels) it had to be photographed on film back in the day. We have more quality options today thankfully
I think that the triangle composition is coming from how your minds eye sees… I have had a hard time changing from my natural compositional perception, and even if I try to avoid it, somehow it always ends up in there to some degree. Looking at my instagram feed over several months of posts is when I realized how strong it is and to just let it be a strength.
I been gluing my paper to 1/4 inch plywood. I use acrylic medium to affix it. Just saying lol I been dying to try archers 300 lb paper. I use the 140 pound cold press. Thanks for video
This is so lovely. I wonder if you could tell us about the very fine brush you began using at approximately 8:23 in the video. It looked like a bamboo brush perhaps, but maybe it was fancy? Sincere thanks for all you do!
Watching this video, automatically, has caused me to become a subscriber. You definitely have the 3rd eye. I love the magical touch and the way you transformed that canvas from a caterpillar into a butterfly within a minimal amount of time, and appreciated the fact that you did not use border tape. I know that border taping seems to be the trend in visual art, but for the sake of freedom, it's good to remember that it's okay 'not' to use it. Also, I was searching for the "best" art paper, and I'm definitely going to try 'this,' or 'these' brands you've presented in this video. But what brand of watercolor paint did you use? Love it. Love it. Love it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! ❤❤❤🎶🎵🎨
Thanks, Steve, for another great spontaneous watercolor painting. I recently saw a live stream by Liron Yanconsky where you were watching and commented how much you like Princeton Aqua Elite watercolor brushes. Could you tell us what it is that you like so much about these brushes? Thanks!
They are snappy and just do what I want them to do. Not really any more to it than that. To be clear though, there are lots of really good brushes out there. The Aqua Elite is Princeton's top of the line watercolor brush and its a worthy synthetic contender that I've become familiar with. I try new brushes all the time. I tend to notice poor performers more than identifying standout great ones. Kolinsky sable continues to be a standout performer but they are hard to get now and the trend is towards full synthetics.
Thank you Steve, I truly enjoy watching you do spontaneous painting. I am currently taking art classes here in my country. I have been teaching myself art for 3 years now. I found that the teacher started with. Basic shapes and lines. I realized all the art books I read, skill share tutorials I watch and RUclips videos I saw start the same way, lines and shapes. I realize my self directed education is a little fragmented and not sequenced. Do you understand where I am coming from? Do you attend traditional art classes for your art education?
The art shop i go to has this brand of paper all across the range, i have not gotten this yet I'm not worthy of it yet, but their spiral bound meant for pencil and dry medea i think is the best i used so far, super white paper and it erases beautifully 😂
The white ink was a great idea. I had thought it might have a bluish tinge but I didn’t notice any difference in your “sky holes”. Pastelists call them that. It makes sense. I will have to give it a try. Right now I only have black ink for a dip pen. The painting looked like a winter scene I suppose more white ink in front would give it the frosty appearance. Have you tried the agave paper? I thought it was ok for watercolor, which surprised me but still not quite Arches or Lanaquarelle. Some really might enjoy it though. Thanks for the tips and take care.
Hi Steve, thank you for the demo :-) I was wondering about the Hahnemühle paper. I was wondering also, if you could tell me who wrote that Symphony that you run as a background. It moves my heart. It reminds me a little of Rachmaninov, but I am not sure. Thank you very much. Greetings from my neck of the woods. Sonja
Hi! It's me again after watching this "exercise" half a dozen times and trying it a few, I still cant crack it but I won't give up! Just one important question, What is that very fine liner brush you're using to do those very fine lines? I have a couple of No.1 good quality brushes and I don't get thise extremely fine lines you get! Thank you for your brilliant work! Cheers CC
Yes it can. Like landscape it requires some familiarity with the shapes and colors of various flowers in order to see them and pull them out of the spontaneous strokes.
I think using ink is a good idea. Haven't tried it yet only gouache. Can ph. Martin's watercolor or India inks be substituted? What specifically do you recommend? Good video!
Steve: I've been trying some spontaneous paintings as of late....what fun!.. Also tried using "drips", which actually turned out quite well. Love watching and have learned so much!. Question: The Lebenzon small goat and synthetic brush you liked....was that a 3/4 or 1" brush?
What a beautiful, magical painting. I wish I could do spontaneous work like this, but most of the time when I try I end up with something that looks like a 😺 regurgitated paint all over the paper. 😒
@@mindofwatercolor it would be helpful if you would mention when the paper is dry. Often, with the spontaneous paintings, it seems that the paper is always wet, and I wonder why you don't get backruns, etc. Just a tiny suggestion.
Steve, a question for you. Do you do share this technique on your Patreon in a slower pace/longer video/tutorial? And if so, I guess it's the 8 dollar subscription, right?
Sometimes I do. For this one, I plan to do, for Patreon, a separate study, with commentary, of just the white highlights through the trees part. Yes, $8 is the support level that gets you all the perks. It's not a subscription service though. It's a voluntary support avenue for the content on this channel. The extra content I make on Patreon is just a perk and a thank you.
Yes, Noodlers for one. But I've not been impressed with it. Pretty translucent. There may be others I'm not aware of. Heavily pigmented inks tend to clog pens.

Sonja
Neptune by Bonnie Grace. The piece reminded me of Howard Shore and his Lord of the Rings score.
@@mindofwatercolor Awesome! Thank you so much, Steve!
Cheers CC
I know you usually do landscapes with the spontaneous technique but I wonder if it could be used for loose florals?
Probably a 3/4" but not sure.
@@mindofwatercolor Thanks, Steve
It seems the 300lb Hahnemühle hot pressed is a bit harder to find.
What a beautiful, magical painting. I wish I could do spontaneous work like this, but most of the time when I try I end up with something that looks like a 😺 regurgitated paint all over the paper. 😒
How damp/wet would the paper be still at 8:43
Totally dry.
@@mindofwatercolor it would be helpful if you would mention when the paper is dry. Often, with the spontaneous paintings, it seems that the paper is always wet, and I wonder why you don't get backruns, etc. Just a tiny suggestion.
@@marynorby9530 yep, I agree. I usually try to, but miss mentioning it on occasion. As a rule crisp detail is always put in on dry paper.

Hi Steve, Is white ink more opaque than white gouache?
Most white inks are less opaque, but this one is about the same as gouache
@@mindofwatercolor Thank you
Do you know of anyone that sells white ink for fountain pens? I'm never happy with the gel pens and not comfortable with loose ink.
Yes, Noodlers for one. But I've not been impressed with it. Pretty translucent. There may be others I'm not aware of. Heavily pigmented inks tend to clog pens.
