I went there in 2010/11. In an all ladies group of different ages. The oldest in her 50’s. The most overweight and out of shaped of us were also was able to do this trek. Albeit with some difficulty. The key was our group leader didn’t rush us. She let every one walk in their own pace. And she ensured either she would be accompanying the fast walkers and local guide be with the slow walkers. Or visa versa. This way our morale was high n we were looked after and we could all do this trek. Also walking sticks were our life savers in covering the stairs going down and coming up. Now I see it’s all commercialised and crowded. Then it’s was just us , the stairs and the jungle. There were only some shops at the end and no home stays.
It's not as tough as this guy highlights. Getting down is super easy and takes 1hr 30 min. The climbing back to the parking part needs some effort and can be done in 3 hours with sufficient break.
I think the experience might be different for different people. Maybe he found it difficult and you found it not so difficult. Although I agree with your opinion, I also did not find it too difficult, but at the same time I would not (in my sane mind) go there again.
