- Dollywood Express: #192 Easter Weekend 4-3-2021.
Happy Easter!
After a very successful trip to Tweetsie Railroad on April 2nd, I took a trip to Dollywood in hopes of catching ex. U.S. Army Training Corps #192. Sure enough Klondike Katie was the power over Easter.
192 was build in 1943 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 3 foot narrow gauge 2-8-2 S118 for the U.S. Army. During World War II the Army took over the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. 192 hauled military supplies from the Yukon Territory in Canada, to the port in Skagway Alaska. After the war was over, 192 was shifted to regular operation for the White Pass and Yukon Route. Then in the 1950s, 192 was retired and placed in storage until 1960. When Grover Robins Jr. was searching for locomotives for his Tweetsie Railroad, and his new Rebel Railroad. 192, ex. White Pass and Yukon #70, 71, and 72 were purchased and delivered to Pigeon Forge TN, 190 went to Tweetsie. In 1961, Rebel Railroad opened with 192 as the star. (just in case you are confused, "Rebel Railroad" was Dollywood before it became Dollywood. After two previous purchases, in 1986 Dolly Parton bought the park, renamed, and rebranded it as the current name "Dollywood") 192 has been in operation ever since.
Special thanks to engineer DJ and fireman Trevor for putting on a great show today.
