Great video. I rode 70 today and she’s a beautiful engine. Her whistle is such a great tone, and can be heard all throughout the park. I never grow tiresome of hearing that whistle.
Thanks! They've been leaving the coaches at the depot overnight for a few years now but this was the first time I'd caught the early morning switching. It was definitely cool to see them running the "wrong way" around the loop.
I got the chance to ride on this beautiful engine back in November. There’s a reason she’s called “Cinderella.” Underneath all that coal and grime is something truly breathtaking.
I might ride down if that’s the case. I heard elsewhere that it could be by this fall but we’ll see what happens. It has to get its wheels from Strasburg.
@@SmokyMtnSteam I noticed the similarities between Dollywood Express and Tweetsie Railroad is that they both have only two steam locomotives on the roster.
Sorry for the late reply, RUclips doesn't notify me of most comments anymore. That shot was taken through a gap in the service gate next to the entrance of Thunderhead. You can see the gate in the previous shot of the coaster.
The mountain is 4.1% max, which is more than most railroad grades (little known fact: the true max is 4.5% which is around the back side of the Country Fair/Village. It's the only time they're under power on the way down). Still, a little surprised at the amount of wheel slip. Normally they do a pretty good job of keeping it anchored to the rails. The other locomotive is road #192 and nicknamed Katie. Years ago, the master mechanic/road foreman allowed cab rides and I rode up there dozens of times, from 1995-2006/7. They even built a 3-person bench seat in the front of the tender to accommodate more Guests (and give the poor fireman, who had to give up his seat when a Guest rode the cab, a chance to get his seat back). Sadly, when he retired in 2009, the cab rides were discontinued by the new master mechanic/road foreman.
I've gotta ask, how in the world are people, you included of course, getting that shot at 3:18?! Edit: And that last shot as well, where's that at? If memory serves me correctly I've asked you about that shot before but I can't remember what you replied with.
That shot was taken at the main crossing, just next to the fence by the little market. All of the nature shots were taken on the Foothills Parkway between Wears Valley and Walland.
Smoky Mountain Railfan well what I mean is that what you commented was that 192 was in for repairs and what I meant was and I said I know where 192 was it was in the shed
Amazing shots! I’m currently in Pigeon Forge myself! Also, is it just me that gets a little annoyed when the engineers don’t use proper whistle codes for crossings??? Just askin’.
Generally speaking, if a theme park railroad crew does not sound the 'proper' signal at a grade crossing it is due to the fact that the official signal would be too loud and/or distracting for the comfort of park guests and employees. (that's in terms of both duration and volume of the sound)
Mateo Pelissier it’s not the case in Dollywood except for the first crossing right after the bridge by thunderhead. The engineers care more about making music with the whistle and putting their own style in it rather than bending to the “proper” code. They’re a theme park, not an official railroad like the Union Pacific and its equivalents.
8:11 beautiful whistle❤❤
This is a huge reason I wanna visit dollywood, a steam engine ride through the smokey mountains would be a once in a lifetime experience for me
Its pretty great, if you're in the area be sure to also check out the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad just over the mountain in North Carolina
I cannot recommend it enough! The park is great, the area is beautiful, and the train ride is sooo much fun and worth the money!
I’d also highly recommend you take time for Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg too! You could spend a whole month in the area and not see and do everything.
You've given me the perfect excuse to love American steam engines.
Great video. I rode 70 today and she’s a beautiful engine. Her whistle is such a great tone, and can be heard all throughout the park. I never grow tiresome of hearing that whistle.
I can agree with you there. 70 generates 205 PSI. That makes any whistle she’s wearing sound great and loud.
8:11 yesss
That’s honestly really interesting to see the engine running light without the coaches. Great job on the video!

@@SmokyMtnSteam I caught that yesterday
I Love It A Lot
Incredible

That Crosby 3 chime sounds a lot like 190’s southern railway Crosby
This is Awesome
3:03 Did 70 just do a tweetsie whistle!?
i think so
This would be like my dream job
Nice. We were planning to go there but it rained all weekend. Hope we can come back again though.
Wonderful work. Your videos are definitely taking on their own style!
Thank you!
I was planning on going this summer but had other things. Also I’m gonna wait till 192 is running. Awesome video by the way.
Thanks! I was told 192 should be running around the beginning of August.
I might ride down if that’s the case. I heard elsewhere that it could be by this fall but we’ll see what happens. It has to get its wheels from Strasburg.
Cool! Can't wait til Tweetsie opens!
Same
Classic
Awesome!
I was there in September of that year when 70 had a Nathan 6-chime whistle.
Ty for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I love this. You make great nothing but quality videos, I subscribed.
Thank you!
Nice butterfly logo on "Cinderella" 70 very fancy!
Amazing video ! !!
Thank you!

At 7:34 the "Wooo!!" got me 😂
The Dollywood Express is like the second Tweetsie Railroad.
It actually is, before Dolly or the Herschend family were involved it was built & owned by the same people as Tweetsie.
@@SmokyMtnSteam I noticed the similarities between Dollywood Express and Tweetsie Railroad is that they both have only two steam locomotives on the roster.
Very Nicely Done! Good to see Dollywood back up and running! However, I wanted to ask, Where did you take the shot at 15:59?

what song is this
Fine work.
Thank you
Bring back the center mounted headlight please
she really is beautiful
It must be brutal wearing a mask in the cab of that locomotive
If you ask me, it's to hot to be wearing 'em in steam loco cabs.
It does get hot in there - rode the cab every chance I got for years.
@@kennethross786 where I am in southern California it can get up to around 170F in the cab of our engines on a summer day.
Why is 70 given the nickname Cinderella???
I don't know, I believe she got that name when she came to Silver Dollar City.
@@SmokyMtnSteam oh
Where is 192 when 70 was running around Dollywood on opening day
She's still operating, I think he only focused on her instead of 192, either that or it was 70's turn for today
192 does not have her drivers on. She is going through a small rebuild. She should be out here in a few weeks.
Smoky Mountain Railfan and I know what it means and I know where it is it’s in the shed put away
Riley Sanesh, what?

Why is 192 always tore up they use her during Halloween and use Cinderella during Christmas we need Cinderella yes

It’s a railroad in a theme park, it doesn’t matter if they don’t use property whistle codes. Who’s gonna stop them, the FRA?
I hope to god wave 2 of the virus doesn't happen, because we need steam locomotives to keep us happy.
Considering the number of park guests walking around wearing their masks wrong and getting in each others' faces, I'm definitely concerned.
This was a nice video, except for having to see everybody wearing masks, which only reminds me of how oppressive and power-hungry our government is!
You sound like a clown
Fully agree, hopefully we learned a lesson on overreach.
Cinderella is better than Klondike Katie
Awesome!
