- Star Citizen 3.23 is on it's way to the Live servers! Is it ready? Probably not, but Invictus launch week is close and CIG need to get the patch out! And to be fair- no Star Citizen patch is ever really ready and polished!

Will admit the dumpster fire of wave 1 is now just a small bag of paper on fire containing a squishy suprise.
Good to see you Zero
I REALLY appreciate your highlighting CIG's focus on getting development patches out for general testing.
While I understand folks' enthusiasm to see progress in stability, there is still FAR too much mis-comprehension of where we are in the development cycle.
Great work, as always.
Thanks! Yep we really need CIG to keep pushing forward, we don't want them to get too bogged down polishing a patch that will be completely superseded in a few months.
Polish is one thing. Basic functionality is another. Think most people mean the latter when they talk about stability. Just sayin.
@@CitizenScott Sure, but...
I feel like I understand what people want, at least the screechy forum-posting minority, as well as some streamers: they want every patch to represent the finished game...RIGHT NOW. Most of them have zero clue how project management or software development really works, nor just how ridiculously hard it is for CIG's devs to do all that AND keep a live testing/game service up 24/7-365.
For a project of this scale, some things absolutely need to be tested in the PU, mainly because that is where "normal" backers live and can provide metrics for CIG just by "playing" the game.
Also, for an alpha build, this is definitely polished, make no mistake.
@@randymorris5296 I have never heard a single person say they want every patch to represent the finished game RIGHT NOW.
Some do call for more polish than is probably reasonable to expect at this stage, but most are just asking for general playability.
CIG themselves have said they want to treat the PU more like a live service game and have internally started calling us players instead of backers.
It's an unprecedented dev project in an unprecedented situation and an unprecedented state currently, so general industry standards tend to not quite fit.
That said, yeah the PU is a different beast to the test builds with a totally different scale and sets of player behaviors, but if CIG want it to be a real game then they need to find ways to better replicate that environment before releasing broken patches to Live to meet sale event deadlines.
@@CitizenScott You really do have a way with words, very generalized, all about you, you say you never seen anyone just to backup what you said, everything you say it's backed up by some random opinion of someone else that matches yours. Your name even makes the case you're some kind of veteran of the game. Who many wave 1's have you tested?
Aww shit, here we go again. Lets hope that they make it somewhat playable in a reasonable timeframe.
It's actually pretty good with latest patch in PTU. Yes, there are a few instabilities but it's a working process and we've suffered so much worse. I've been pretty impressed with latest updates with 3.23, all things considered.
Just dropping by to give some stats from the patch that dropped about an hour ago.
3440x1440 on a 2080, 5800X3D pbo2 -30, 32gB @ 3200mhz
105fps in space - DX11, TSR, Borderless
75fps in space - Vulkan, DLSS , Borderless
77fps in space - Vulkan, DLSS, Fullscreen
85fps in space - Vulkan, TSR, Fullscreen
62fps in space - Vulkan, No upscaling, fullscreen
All upscaling used was Quality mode.
Interestingly enough, frame time is lower WITH upscaling, from around 17ms without, 12ms with, pretty much the same TSR or DLSS.
Until they implement server meshing and spatially divide the zones within the same system, the server response, synchronization and therefore the AI, we will continue to suffer from terrible performance. 😢
At the moment no meshing or pyro and its jump points for version 3.23 or 3.23.x. 😢
Hopefully at least they can stabilize and optimize the new vulkan renderer in 3.23.x
They already said unambiguously that Vulkan won't really hit its stride until the next major patch.
Yeah hope they get multi-threading in soonTM
As you said, until we get faster and smoother servers, even if they add all kinds of new features, the gameplay performence will be sluggish which essentiallly does not allow many people to enjoy playing the game actively.
The increase in player numbers will also make the PU much more lively, thus increasing emergent gameplay that might arise from encounters that players will have doing missions and other things.
In essence, server meshing is still the Heart that star citizen needs to come to life.
Just a reality check: server meshing is going to be an absolute cluster-f in the early stage, just like PES was. It will probably take a year just to get *static* server meshing kinda sorta smooth.
@@puntmannoor3403 totally agree with you.
Just played the newest patch. 100%, 3.23 is coming very very soon. That was the best most stable/beautiful session of Star Citizen I’ve ever had. RIP 3.22 07.
With waves 3, 4 and 5 all moot, now it's gone to ALL backers in an Open EPTU, I concur that Wave 1 is a thing of the past. Is it ready for Live? It will have to be!!
Again I will stand firm that CIG's biggest weakness is that marketing drives the developing team rather than it is supposed to be the other way around.
And yet both are evidently doing just fine. 🤷🏿♂️
@@LucidStrike Hmm, yes, completely unplayable patches every single update that destroy any attempt to log in are "just fine"
@@katto1937bro wtf are you talking about, unplayable? Yeah there are a bunch of sucky things but far from unplayable.
It’s a balancing act, so far they seem to be doing fine. Could it be better? Sure, then again; everything can be better.
I could be sipping on cocktails in my beach hammock between two palm trees on some Caribbean island with a legally aged harem satisfying my needs in each and every way conceivable while commanding my BMM crew successfully through a pirate attack in Pyro.
Star citizens fans just complaining about the devs all day every day.
But I was assured CIG didn't want to bring anything broken to the game and that's why they delayed hangars.
They just aren't ready so the managers didn't sign them off I suppose.
Genuinely valid point
The game is still plenty playable. If hangars break you literally couldn't do anything, just be stuck running around new babbage
They definitely didn't say they weren't going to break anything and most definitely didn't _assure_ anyone anything
-20% in ptu vs live isnt really that bad, usually its ~15% from what ive seen
Makes sense to get it out now and work on .23.x patches ahead of invictus. Not just ship sales, huge for new players and ingame events
Plus getting it stable now makes it easier to pinpoint issues with the freight elevators in the point patches, rather than worrying about other bugs/issues.
When benchmarking raw GPU performance using AC is a better way to separate the raw render performance from server baggage because the PU servers introduces things that hold back the renderer waiting for server stream data because it does some4 LOD server side and some client side for the mega maps. Its good they fixed the entity count because oh man it was getting out of control in some places. The reason everyone loves ArcCorp landing zone is it has the smallest entity count of all the landing zones and always got better performance. Both are good to compare for effective performance expectations, but AC lets you see how much is really render gains vs server cleanup and what tax the replication layer adds.
Good video!, Thank you for still running tests on older equipment. I run i5 8400 1080Founders with 32gb still so good to see im still in the game!
That's actually great news in that iterative improvement is the hallmark of progress in development. I would love to see CIG start releasing functional code every 2-4 weeks with continuous improvements as soon as the framework and platform enables this. Hard to do when significant backend functionality isn't integrated and/or fullly functional yet though beyond some aesthetic areas.
has there been an "official" position on a game reset (aka Wipe)? Months ago they said, "no" but so much is changing including massive price increase across the board on aUEC ship prices.
I believe there won't be any? Judging from the changes, all they're doing is implementing Master Mode (MM) to the ships. Most of the changes are mainly FPS changes like the UI, crosshairs, and mini-maps. But I'd say put expectations low, and just in case it happens, you're ready for a wipe.
Don't believe anyone about a "wipes" they rarely do full wipes, just certain things get wiped.
@@retrowrath9374 Yup. Last full wipe was 3.18 for obvious database reasons, but they've only being doing partial wipes since then.
the amount of improvement each ptu patch is getting impressive. Todays patch has been getting me lots more frames in DX.
I played last night and it was so nice. It was smooth and just felt fun to play
The last few days have been very good tbh. There are still hang ups, but our servers have been maxed out at 100 constantly, and its been smooth. Still issues but not ground breaking. I think last night was the first time I saw a recovery actually work without going into recovery every three minutes like we were getting. I would like to see them stick to wave three or four a bit longer but it's really not that bad.
Yeah, not even close, but Invictus looms. So much for treating backers like players and the PU more like a game.
Who hurt you? Why are you always so negative?
Realism isn’t negative.
@@CitizenScottits not. But you are
@@tuckwalker670 How so?
@@CitizenScott I rarely see you positive anywhere mate
It is really great to see the testing you do for the SC community. I would love to know your opinion of the Vulkan 6000 series GPU UI bugs. I have read that when enabled and using Linux that the UI bug isn''t there.
Played 45 mins last night and was very playable for me. This was on eptu. 75 fps in lorville. In live, I get 10-30 in lorville with extreme stuttering sometimes.
remember back in the day when the game was announced and early pledge etc. I had a 780 ti and was about to upgrade to the 980 ti within a year or so. And the high specs was like the 980 ti would be like cream of the crop to use. And like an I5 4th gen would be great. I'm now using 14th gen i9
and a 4090 :P
@tenpound . You rock. I like these videos you do on SC. Thanks man.
the thing that worries me is, I can't imagine a Star Citizen without glitches and bugs. I don't if SC will ever really be a "polished" experience
Thanks, as always, for doing the in-depth testing on our behalf.
I have been playing now for 3 years and seen 2 previous Invictus Weeks and other "free fly" events. CIG always, and I mean ALWAYS, drops a huge patch full of bugs to make that experience as bad as possible. This year will be no different.
While majority of people are complaining about the "patch noit being ready", I will say that your coverage and persistence in testing the builds versus one another is duly appreciated and based on your own testing and some of the feedback from other testers, it's about as ready as a patch needs to be for live. The biggest issues seems to be falling through geometry or getting stuck in the distro centres, but otherwise it seems about as good as it's going to get for now.
Really excited for this patch even with its bumps and omissions.
Going live before wave 4 gets a look see, interesting turn of events. Edit: just gone open access for all backers an hour ago.
Guys.. What is the best cpu to buy today for SC with RTX4080? 7800x3D or 7900x
I believe the 7800x3D
My 5800x3D doesn't hit above 60% utilization when playing. But the 7800x3D would let you do background things (I keep most background apps closed).
@@crispy9175 That's my scenario!
I'm playing with my old Ryzen 7 3800x and I have no problem getting 45-50 fps on average oh and my graphics card is rx5700xt....
I edited with the GPU combined !
So many people that are active now have never experienced a true major patch like 3.18
The whining will be huge 😂
What a grumpy old man 💀
I love so hard the npc wars in Lorville, I need to see them xD
Gelled neon background, how very 80's BBC of you 😉
😆
The ai in Lorville were funny. That's a crazy bug and I hope they tell us what went wrong
Once this patch is live, can you redo a review of all your SC graphics settings, especially the new ones, and second, your NVIDIA driver settings for good performance at 1440p. :)
Only channel for SC news along with FPS (frames) and spec related info as well, def appreciate it bro 🤙🏻 ty
I've been stuck in everest harbor habs since friday...
I still think it needs some work.
3.23 will be great when 3.24 comes out. Problem is, 3.24 will be bad.
Ya I was super hyped for this patch till I got access and realized how buggy everything really still is.
I was hoping for a good 3.23 experience and maybe a release towards the end of May. Oh well. I hope we get a bunch of fixes and cargo in 3.23.1 or 3.24 isn't too far away.
Here comes another 3.18. That was fun. Lol. They don’t care. As long as we are willing to put out millions for pixel promises, they don’t care.
So you want them not to release until beta?
You think CIG staff is malicious…. That’s absolute delusion. Grass? Touch.
@@TheRealBillix The staff? No, the management, however, is a different story. I would clarify that there is a difference between maliciousness and plain greed.
@@gloirek I want them to perfect what they have already released. What good is master modes when we are still having endless bugs with what we already have. Why make and sell more ships when we phase through the ones we have now.
@@mammoth505 By definition an Alpha is an unfinished and mostly buggy piece of software in which foundational features get added constantly. Polish happens in beta.
Why should they polish an Alpha just for it to be broken again when they add the next big feature?
this week? seems to be more next week since they have the Q&A friday about the patch
Until we get Dynamic Server Meshing, fuck Live. A little jank is much better than outright not being able to log in. We're not here for the alpha but for the finished game, and being skittish about moving forward is no good. 🤷🏿♂️
I've been playing with the latest build for a bit, and its much better.
I think it is going to be an absolute wreck to start, where most won't even want to play. And I mean the people that are already used to the ~5 server FPS and the pretty nasty state of things on live servers currently with more people playing. And that is before even thinking about a lot of the changes to the game that are controversial to many. But hey, I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.
I think end of May might be a good time to start hoping for "enough" stability to where we actually want/can play the game, I can wait that long personally. I am more concerned about the direction of things, the bullet sponge I have been seeing does not look fun. But I still have some faith, lol.
FINALLY the ppl of Loreville stand up to their oppressors. VIVA LA LOREVILLE!!!!
Been playing on the eptu
I have a 4090 with 7800x3d and my frames are down on average 10-15 fps in major cities. I run at 4k with 64gb as well
Doesn't seem too bad. I have a 4090 and can pump out 100 fps in cities in 3.22. If you add the extra render quality for water and clouds it almost seems par. Are you using DX11?
@dtrjones I get those frames in 3.22 easily. In atmosphere I average 125-130 only in 3.22 not 3.23
I'm playing on my old system with a Ryzen 7 3800x and a rx5700xt with 32gb of ddr4 3200mhz ram and get over 45 fps average shouldn't you get way more with the system you have?
Downloading now and bracing for impact.
Probably will wait for 3.23.1 or 2 . I cannot play another 3.18 and I wish this stayed longer in the oven. :(
Just wait until they slap the patch with a free fly like they did last year too
The Xenothreat event will be a complete bust. That has had single figure frames in eptu. This is how I've prepared... I reinstalled Elite Dangerous 😅
SC is a great game if you enjoy screaming 4 letter words that your neighbors can hear.
Good job ! 😉👍
well i need to sell the 4000 scu of medical supplies on my hull c
I've been having a ton of fun in 3.23. last couple log ins have been pretty bug free, one of the new server "hold on a minute" things. If FPS is lower it's not by much.
Watched two streamers in 3.23 yesterday.
One fell through the DC floors, had about 7 server errors within 20 minutes, and failed their delivery mission when they landed at the destination and both their ship and the box suddenly disappeared.
Other one landed at a DC, had very low client FPS there, fell through the floor into the planet, and when they respawned got stuck in the "fixed" recovery loop.
Seems like every stream I watch is a very different experience than many people are claiming they have but not showing. Just sayin.
@@CitizenScott I didn't watch those streams so all I can give you is my own experience in EPTU. You should be able to try it out yourself soon. It's definitely nothing unusual for a patch at this stage or anything to be salty and spiteful about.
Lets gooo, Mining reigns supreme again and salvage nerf. QUANTANIUM THE REAL GRIND
They can improve gameplay by simply lowering the requirement to 16gb of ram and letting me get 30 fps. I'm not even asking for 1440p.
Tell me how releasing an unknown 3.23 for Invictus when you want people to come in and see how the game should run, which it is in 3.22.
Wait until after Invictus THEN put 3.23 in.
How many people do you lose that can't even get on, or it's very hard to get on and then have all the glitches of a new patch?
Sorry, marketing isn't right.
I’m confused, is the replication layer coming in 3.23?
Yes.
I've seem guard's shooting each other in all cities I even got killed in asops area in lorville due to random bullets
My PC smokes also when did yours start?
ready...sure :D
eats up memory like there's no tomorrow, so not, its not ready
I’m ready! It’s ready! We’re all ready!
Might want to change the title. People may think this video is about the game "Ready Or Not".
How to do u know it’s live this week ur just shelling
Why Drop FPS? So Dlss in Nvidia not working? No make sense this.
As LIVE is pretty much unplayable at the moment they may as well push 3.23 to LIVE
I actually don't mind 24 fps. 60fps is just too much overkill and no one really wants that high of frame rate to be honest.
love the lorriville bug make it a brain virus!'
I don’t think it is ready, there is just too many server errors looping…
I’d rather wait another 10 years and have crappy updates than a rushed game so I think they’re doing it right.
I can imagine the poo show we are about to experience.
Losing performance? :-I my surprised face
Outside of the server boot loop and the elevator issues, I don’t see what issues the patch has that people are saying makes the game so unplayable. If they fix those two things, it’s a pretty playable patch. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be ready by the end of this week.
Maybe they're just concerned about the 30Ks. But if we look back at 3.18, CIG had implemented an update in the game's backend and it did ruin the servers for a short period of time. But that update only involved the item placement which could've overloaded the servers' systems. But for the update coming with 3.23 I believe CIG have found a way to mitigate or fix the issue of 30Ks and they might've found a way to keep the players playing even when a server crashes. I don't think there will be issues for when 3.23 goes live. At least, for the case of 30Ks, I'm sure we'll still get them, but they might become a very rare case moving forward.
3.23 is not remotely ready to go live. Worse still is the prospect of throwing XenoThreat live into that, which will leave us with a totally unplayable sh*tshow most likely. It’s like they’ve learned nothing from the 3.18 debacle a year ago.. but I think it’s entirely ship sale/commercially driven as a reason.
From what I heard, the xenothreat testing did not go well at all in ptu
It is, cope L bozo
@@karmabad6287 No, it didn’t at all, and that’s a big concern too. Another is that while 3.23 is playable on low population servers on PTU right now, it could break under the much higher loads of Fleet Week along with a XT event running concurrently. Let’s hope not, but it looks like they’ll push this to live regardless, and we’ll just have to see how things hold up (or don’t work properly at all).
it's not even close to ready
RELEASE THE LIBEATOR
This patch is so not ready for live. Combat desync is godawful in both space and on the ground.
EPTU is far better for me than PU

its annoying.
and the people in spectrum chat are the worst.
"don't be so poor..."
"well. go and buy a better pc. yours sucks"
"i fail to understand why people with trash want high fps"
i know a lot of rich people play SC. but damn. they are disconnected from reality.
i'm a single parent and nurse. i'm not poor ffs. but buying a new pc for me isn't like buying a pack of bubble gum.
This system is fine for any other game besides SC.
Damn even my PC VR experiences are great and high fps....
just feels really bad actually loving a game and getting butt kicked by CIG and then the community too.
Lots of miss-information here. First up are you using default DX11 and not Vulkan which is still WIP and doesn't have the multithreading enabled, graphics settings have increased with high fidelity water and clouds. Secondly you are harking back to that poor performance video, many optimisations have come in since then. The Lorville guards fighting is an old bug. 3.18 was server issues and you've been discussing client issues. Just too many things to confuse people. Remember a point patch will closely follow this one in a few weeks, so perhaps not such a big risk.
Recent updates and new bug fixes....only if it's able to talk real people into buying pretend products for real money that work from time to time....I would love to see all the lawsuits from the victims
Is it all of this happening because CIG sucks?
It going to break the game for a While.
First :)
Second
Bad decision
CIG is a terrible company
why? they just releasing a big update
No one is forcing you to play this game
